Re: 2012 Contenders Discussion
After seeing the Promised Land trailer I wouldn't call it a darkhorse to win, especially with Focus (solid bet to get nominated, not to win), and a late release date. But if it's good it's a cinch to get nominated IMO. Plotline is up the Oscars alley, has the cast and director, etc. I'd guess on Picture, Screenplay, Holbrook, one of Damon/McDormand, with 0 wins

I really hope The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel will be recognized in some way, at least at the Globes. Maybe a couple of supporting noms. Maggie Smith really deserves one.

Re: 2012 Contenders Discussion
You think Looper will be up for anything at all with its praise? I have a hard tinme seeing it anywhere given that it is a genre flick and also the techs are solid, but not great. This isn't Inception on the techncal level.
I suppose a Best Original Screenplay nom might happen, akin to Children of Men's screenplay nod, but that's about it sadly.
Unless it miraculously becomes a $120+ million hit, then I could see it pulling a District 9 and snagging a BP nod....but that's a longshot.

Re: 2012 Contenders Discussion
Bernie is reportedly the first screener in voters' mailboxes. Maybe it can score a screenplay nomination. Audiences respond to it. Though I almost wonder if the fact it's air-quotes "adapted" (based on a magazine article) hurts it.

Re: 2012 Contenders Discussion
Provided Looper can keep mits 85/100 MC grade...if it's not nominated for anything, it'll be the highest-rated widely released live action film at MC with no Oscar nods since Knocked Up...

Re: 2012 Contenders Discussion
After seeing the Master I'm not confident in its AMPA chances at all. I'm no longer predicting PTA for a nomination and I think it will either be the 7th-9th strongest BP nominee or not nominated. If there was 5 noms, The Master getting in would be nearly unprecedented IMO.

Not sure how this impacts its overall season, but Beasts of the Southern Wild isn't eligible for the SAG Awards.

The one with the Iraq war, 9/11, MLK, etc. American history montage at the start, right?
Definitely bold and poignant.

Re: 2012 Contenders Discussion
The New York Film Festival is doing another 'work-in-progress' screening Monday night (like they did with Hugo last year) and it is highly rumored to be Lincoln this time around.
Wouldn't surprise me - I know it is starting to screen next week anyway in some form.

Re: 2012 Contenders Discussion
Some are worried that the use of the Bond theme throughotu could DQ it, but I dunno. Only three Bond themes have been nominated before ("Live and Let Die," "Nobody Doe It Better," For Your Eyes Only), so it still has an uphill battle.

Skyfall has to be nominated for something if the current reviews hold up, right? I know Casino Royale got shut out, but Skyfall's reviews are even better.

Re: 2012 Contenders Discussion
Random franchise films have sneaked into Cinematography before (Batman Forever, Batman Begins, Harry Potter/HalfBlood Prince), and the branch loves themselves some Roger Deakins, and the camerawork has been praised up the wazoo. So that's a real possibility. Sound awards too.
