Post Biggest Surprises at the Oscar nominations this year
I'd say the biggest surprise to me is Mike Leigh's director nomination for Vera Drake. This is the one I was absolutely not thinking of.

The many nominations for Vera Drake for sure...

And Eastwood being nominated as actor and director, the snub for House of Flying Daggers

1. Mike Leigh
2. Clint Eastwood
3. Alan Alda (although I predicted it)
4. 2 foreign nominees in song
5. I, Robit, Potter and Spider Man in effects
6. Shark Tale in animated picture
7. VILLIAGE IN SCORE! Potter over Terminal in Score.
8. Collateral snubbed in Cinematography
9. HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS snubbed in Foreign film.
10. No Phantom in costumes

For me

Clint Eastwood up for best actor ( though he very much deservers it, his performance makes Swanks performance )
Tupac Resurrection up for best Doc ( I wouldve never imagined )

Shark Tale is the biggest surprise, and one of the worst nominees ever.

Agree that Shark Tale wasn't that good but at least someone confirmed how undeserving The Polar Express was.

Does the surprise vote for Clint Eastwood mean anything for the chances of Hillary Swank in MDB.

There are other films that are better Shark Tale even if you don't nominate The Polar Express. ST is one of the worst films of the year. ](*,)

Troy getting a nod for costumes...

You know what? I really thought this would be a no-surprise nomination day, but besides the usual suspects as Best Picture there were a heck of a lot surprises - which is a good thing

Mike Leigh was a minor surprise to me. Wasn't predicting it but considered it as one of my alternates (based on strong showing in BAFTA, British Independent Film Awards, Critics Award, and previous nom for Secrets and Lies). I knew he would be in for screenplay though.

House of Flying Daggers and The Polar Express snubbed in Foreign and Animated.

Clint Eastwood for Actor!!!

The score nominees.

Troy gets nominated for something.

A lot of surprises in the tech categories. Best picture nominees dominate the 8 big categories but not tech.

Surprises:

Supporting Actor: Alan Alda
Snubs: Peter Sarsgaard

Lead Actor: Clint Eastwood, though I always thought he would get in.

Biggest snubs of the year:
Julie Delpy for Best Actress
Day After tomorrow for Visuals

The most un-fit and out of place nomination: The Sea Inside for Mae-up (??)

there's more but I'm too sleepy and have to go to school

Wow, I just noticed it. Huge surprise, but I guess the voters somehow judge by the movie's overall quality as well :???: That's the reason why I think DAT didn't get a Best Visual Effects nom.

Aviator managed to slip a name into every important category except actress (but only since there was no one eligible)
Picture
Director
Screenplay
Actor
Sup. Actess
Aup. Actor

Plus: It has far more guild support with 11 nominations compared to Million Dollar Babys 7. You may ridicule me later for this, but to me Aviator is now a lock for Best Picture!
