w00t! When they finally get clled you guys are going to hear so much from me you'll want to :-# me up.

Haha, sorry I haven't been part of the discussion so much. As is apparent from my poor call on the two final docs (neither of which is eligable) I have no idea what's going on until I hear the noms. Picking winners will be fun though.

BTW, who here is going to an Oscar party? I've been to fun ones the last two years running. Catered with drinks and everyone dressing up in evening gowns and suits, etc. Its kind of fun, and the closest thing to being there since it gets projected onto big screen and there is an entire audiance aspect with cheering and booing, etc. I need to find a good one here in NYC, because last year I went to one in Chicago and the year before in Boston. Anyone know of any good ones here? Preferable economic entry and courtesy champaign?

Is Almodovar eligable for anything? Foreign film? Or was it released in the wrong year in Spain? Or was it a second entry? Will they sneak him in for direction if the film isn't actally eligable? Or cinematography or editing? Something dammit! Its the Best movie of the year and the only film I've given an A to in reviews.

It isn't eligible for Foreign Film category since Spain submitted The Sea Inside instead, but it is eligible for all other categories since it was released in U.S. in 2004.

That'll never happen now that they have an animated category. It's only happened once in the 70 something years.

Based on what Xia just told me I would switch up Yimou for Almodovar. Not for quality (Everyone knows what I thought that is not the point) But because Hero was released so late here that judges are going to either be Yimou-ed out or they are going to have let-down from the former to the latter because the critics seemed to have done that as well.

Here's a thought, does Gael Garcia Bernal finally get a nod in one of the acting categories with Diaries and Education out this year?

I would actually think just the reverse. Because Hero is ineligible, I think that actually helps to have people throw the combined support behind Yimou. Even though some like Hero more, most of them still think HOFD is more than adequate, so they wouldn't have any trouble writing Yimou's name for it. If Hero had been eligible, there would have been a vote split, and the chance of him nominated would become much smaller.

On the other hand, I can definitely see Almodovar getting nominated for the foreign director spot, if there is one this year. However, Almodovar was just nominated two years ago for Talk to Her and won the screenplay, so the director branch may feel he has been honored already. And especially when they know whoever they pick for the 5th spot is more of a symbol of respect since that director's respective film won't be nominated by the entire body of academy, they probably will choose someone who has never been honored and who they respect a lot. I don't know if they think that deep when they cast their ballots, but I'm still amazed that Yimou doesn't have a foreign film oscar yet with the portfolio of works he has put out.

Gael Bernal just got caught in the best and most competitive category of the year. There are so many great performances by actors in 2004 that Bernal couldn't get on the radar. Also having two films hurt here since the academy rule states that you can't put a person's name twice in the nomination ballot, so a voter has to choose which film to put Bernal under, thus a vote split occur. That's part of the reason Scarlett was snubbed last year.

Xia...I see you point, but do you think it will just get a best foreign film nod? They might reserve director for Pedro because his film can't go through in foreign, just like last time. For sure I agree with you Daggers will at least get a foreign film nod. Also its unfortunate about Bernal, because the female categories are pretty damn weak this year, but you are right, he'll get locked out of the male ones. Too bad, Leo was ok in the Aviator, but pretty much everything about that movie (except maybe Blanchet) was overrated.

I'll call foreign since its the only one I can think of. I might be off the mark too since I don't know which submissions are even eligable. Where are you guys getting this? From an official site?

Best Foreign Film

Moolaade
The Downfall
The Sea Inside
The Motorcycle Diaries
House of Flying Daggers

The rule for foreign films is too strict. I think they should make all the ones that got a release in U.S. automatically eligible. Out of your choices, dolce, Moolaade and The Motorcycle Diaries aren't eligible.

Back to the topic of director, I think one thing that hurt Yimou is that HOFD is eligible for foreign film and will sure get a nomination. When Pedro Almodóvar and Fernando Meirelles were nominated, their respective films weren't eligible for foreign film, and their films got much acclaims to be completely ignored, so the academy found several categories to nominate for each of them, and they got good enough support to break through the director branch. With HOFD being eligible, the voters may not nominate Yimou again in the director category. Still, to counter that point, I can argue that Alejandro Amenábar is also a world class director, and it's likely that they will give Amenábar the foreign film oscar, then Yimou's chance for director increases again.

I can't wait for the morning.

Yeah...exactly my thoughts since Dagger is eligable for foriegn film. Director nods have rarely gone to foreigners. You can probably count them on your fingers (discounting UK). Ah damn...why the hell are Moolaade and Motorcycle ineligable...for chrissake. With Education and Motorcycle gone there's two of my top three of the year right there...and I've only heard good things about Moolaade (will be seeing it with in the next few weeks).

Damn...well pull those two out and throw in Very Long Engagement (despite not being that great) and Five Obstructions. Geesh, I'm pissed now.

A Very Long Engagement isn't eligible either since France submitted The Chorus, which isn't getting that stellar of reviews and not doing much at box office.
