sort of. Vera Drake is the bigger surprise in here...

Because all of Leigh's films are workshopped and improvised, its a strange nomination.

The Score category is very strange. No Incredibles, what were they thinking?

I have a BIG question in the documentry feature category. Tupac: Ressurection was nonimated, but it was released in theaters November 2003, so why was it still eligible?

The Village for best score was the biggest surprise to me. I absolutely adore that music and I never dreamed the Academy would look past the mixed critical/public reaction and recognize it. I'm just so bloody ecstatic about it.

On a side note, the lack of Flying Daggers in Foreign film was also a surprise that pissed me off just a tad. Can't really say that Eastwood was a surprise. Still kind of a waste of a nomination when the dude has no chance in hell of winning.

It has been discussed multiple times in other threads. Documentary features must be theatrically released within two years of their completion and must be released theatrically between September 30th and August 31st to qualify for Academy Award nominations.

One more thing I must add...

I can't believe that both volumes of Kill Bill will have come and gone without a single oscar nomination (correct me if I'm wrong). At the very least it should have had nominations in the sound and cinematography categories, but the real kick in the ass is that the performance that was screaming out to be nominated (David Carradine) was snubbed in favour of another nod for Jamie Foxx who 1)doesn't belong in supporting and 2)does not even give the best performance in Collateral.

FUCK.

It is such a shame, one of the biggest in the Academy's history. I mean, I am not surprised, but it is still a shame. Kill Bill is a masterpiece of filmmaking to live for years to come...

Am I the only one who's surprised that Paul Giamatti wasn't nominated for best actor? I figured they'd nominate him instead of either Don Cheadle or Clint Eastwood.

I am very, very upset that Paul Giamatti didn't get a nod for Best Actor. I heard the nominations over the radio and was shocked when I didn't hear his name.

Peter Sarsgaard not getting a nomination bothers me as well.

Although I kind of saw it coming...

the fact that the Academy nominated two films (Ray and Finding Neverland) that weren't groundbreaking or original and were only good because of their performances. I mean, sheesh, you gave Jamie Foxx and Johnny Depp nominees for Best Actor but aren't the nods in Best Picture pushing it a bit? The films really aren't much better than Monster...

The 7 nods for Finding Neverland were a bit suprising, too.

Frankly, the domination of foreign films was suprising. The fact that The Chorus, The Sea Inside, The Motorcycle Diaries, and A Very Long Engagement each got two nominations. And, Moreno being nominated for Actress. Although she did deserve the nod, a foreign actress hasn't been nominated in a while...

Motorcycle Diaries deserved a nod for cinematography and NOT best song.

Mike Leigh for Vera Drake was the biggest suprise. Clint's nod was also, as well as Shark Tale over The Polar Express. (Especially when Polar got other nods!) I'm also surprised by Alan Alda, who didn't really impress me.

I was a little surprised by Alda, though I thought he gave the kind of performance that gets nominated in 'best pic sweeps'. I wish I had included him in my final predictions. He just didn't have any buzz going into the nominations.

No you are not. I was surprized Paul wasn't nominated. Though I thought Church deserved his more, because he had the better lines. I saw Sideways yesterday, and it deserved every nom it got.

You know, I think Clint Eastwood will be a serious threat to Jamie Foxx for actor. Scorsese will win director and if M$B doesn't win picture, Eastwood might win an acting prize. He won't walk away empty-handed this year.

Biggest suprise:

Polar Express getting screwed by Sharktale. GO DREAMWORKS  getting both their animated movies noms.

Jamie Foxx getting 2 noms in teh acting catagory. I was sure he'd get it for Ray but lol not for Collateral.

and teh Best Surprise for me is F/911 not getting any noms. w00t! w00t! \:D/

That's the exact same word that came mind for me when they announced them this morning.

What the hell were they thinking?

Although I enjoyed Shark Tale, I can't believe they nominated that compared to The Polar Express. It's just mind boggling to me.

Why did they nominate Tupac: Resurrection?

Didn't it come out last year?

Was I the only one expecting Paul Giamatti to get snubbed? I didn't expect Eastwood to get in, but I always thought Liam Neeson or Javiar Bardem would get in before Giamatti. His performance did not seem very difficult or special, but most importantly, he didn't have the likeability or charm that his Oscar-nominated co-stars did. While he did a very good job, it was not at all Oscar-friendly.

If you look at what Rogue Commander said earlier in this thread, then you will know why.

Ah, oh yes...

Another one I don't think anyone's pointed out yet (maybe not, though):

No screenplay nom for Kinsey, which I thought was a shoo-in.

I haven't seen it so I can't claim if its status was warranted, but I think we could say that Kinsey is this year's official 'lost in the shuffle' release.

Yeah, Kinsley was totally snubbed. I wonder if that had something to do with its topic or with too good competition
