2 Oscar predicts from October on BOM
here is what Rafikki and I said about the best picture for last year:
Raffi Sarkissian wrote: Aviator Alexander Closer The Passion of the Christ Fahrenheit 9/11 Kinsey Ray Finding Neverland the Motorcycle Diaries Sideways Vera Drake Phantom of the Opera
As far as I'm concerned, the top 5 nominees will come from this list of 12 movies, GUARANTEED! Really a good job, although MDB is missing! Impact wrote: Like King Rafikis list of films that have possibilites, here are mine:
Aviator Closer Passion of the Christ Finding Neverland Ray Enternal Sunshine F 9/11 Kinsey Phantom of the Opera Life Aquetic Vera Drake Motorcycle Diariess Sea Inside
I have Sideways and MDB missing on mine, intresting enough my list was one of the few without Alexander.

Good job guys. Nobody is talking about possible nominations for "Brokeback Mountain" and Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhall. Copuld be contenders. The film has been moved to december.

That's interesting. Would the Academy give praise to a film like this? IF it is truly a great movie, maybe we'll see the Academy open up and show they aren't homophobic.
PEACE, Mike

I had high hope for Brokeback Mountain, but the enthusiasm has reduced recently. First was the rumor that the movie was turned down by Cannes as an official selection due to tepid response from the committee. Second I'm just not sure Academy is going to embrace the subject matter. It could be a contender in acting and even director category since Ang Lee had been overlooked before, but the praise has to been universal, IMO, for it to grab a BP nod.

I tend to agree except for the Cannes part. I ALSO read that Cannes does not like ang Lee and have NEVER accepted any of his films anyways. That's a good sign. We'll see. I also read that response from screenings have been VERY positive. If I find the article then I'll link it.

Did I miss something in Lord Of The Rings!???
As far as Ang Lee, he's not that popular with the Academy either. He wasn't nominated for director when Sense And Sensibility was nominated for best picture.

they said the same thing bout master and commander and even older films like ben hur and lawrence of ariba

I wouldn't say he isn't popular. When he directed Sense and Sensibility, he was still treated as a foreign director and considered somewhat an outsider, but I think it's different now. He is quite respected, and academy may feel owning him one with the Sensibility snub and CTHD defeat, where he won Golden Globe and DGA but lost to Soderbergh at Oscar.
Impact, this may help to answer your question: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0388795/. It's a story about a gay couple.

I'm just saying considering the quality of his movies he should have more than one Oscar nom. for director.

Lord of the Rings shouldn't be on that list. As to the rest, yeah, that's true, but as far as I know, this would be the first film where the homosexual subject matter is a dominant part of the film. I know that in Philadelphia it wasn't the big picture, and I don't remember there being any in Boys Don't Cry (although I have only seen bits of the film) and I'm not sure about The Crying Game.
PEACE, Mike
