Re: DGA Nominations 2016
Yep, these films are the top 5 contenders, and the weak link for Oscar, if we have any, could be Villeneuve instead of Davis.

Re: DGA Nominations 2016
So Lion is top 5 and lived up to its more AMPAs than critics bill. It is well directed so it should get in BD. I'm surprised it didn't get SAG ensemble

Based on stats, precedent, or intuition? Anywho, even though this is shaping up to be a 'predictable' awards season, I'm floored that the two best movies of the year, Arrival and Moonlight, both of which resonated deeply for me, are getting so much recognition. Haven't seen Lion, Manchester, Fences, Nocturnal, Hacksaw, and others yet, while La La Land was just very good, not great.

Lion is showing across the board guilds support and looking at multiple major noms elsewhere (Picture/Supporting Actor/Supporting Actress/Screenplay), and it has Harvey Weinstein; then there is the precedent of sci-fi directors getting snubbed at the Oscars, and Davis starts to remind me of Lenny Abrahamson and Benh Zeitlin. BTW, this is the first time since 1999 where DGA consists of all first-time nominees. Will Oscars follow suit?

Re: DGA Nominations 2016
Two sweepers of the big 5 precusors (SAG, PGA, DGA, BAFTA, ACE) this year, Moonlight and Manchester. LLL missed SAG ensemble.

Re: DGA Nominations 2016
Villeneuve missing would kind of remind me of a Fincher or Nolan situation where the cool genre guy got in at DGA but not AMPAs. But is still a good bet to get in.
Gibson is probably out, he felt more like a DGA nominee who misses AMPAs than other way around and Nate Parker nomination proved they're probably less worried about doing the PC thing than AMPAs will be

Harvey obviously has some mojo left judging by Lion's guilds performances.

Yeah, that part was falling in the "intuition" bucket.

Re: DGA Nominations 2016
I don't know, it is so rare that PGA and DGA get all the nominees right. PGA has missed Amour, Room, Philomena, The Tree of Life, Winter's Bone, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, A Serious Man and The Blind Side ever since expanding to 10 nominations.
DGA has missed Abrahamson, Miller, Payne, Zeitlin, Haneke, the Coens in the same time period.

Actually, this is the first time since 1996. Frank Darabont was a previous nominee back in 1999.

Re: DGA Nominations 2016
Can't be stopped now, given if directors want to make a point, this is the best venue/opportunity for Moonlight and Jenkins.
