Post Re: Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
Well I rewatched this film a few days ago due to all the showings of Star wars on (the spike channel?).

Anyway, I had to skip past lots of stuff. Anything with Padme and Anakin...skip. Most of the dialogue with Obi and Anakin early on was pretty corny. The emperor seducing Anakin throughout the film was annoying as well. The way Palpatine dispatches three jedi (especially Kit Fisto...hello Clone wars...he's a badass) is totally unbelievable. I found the death of the Jedi to be very touching and still found Grevious to be a very good villain and really enjoyed the last 30 minutes of the film. In the end, Mace Windu was the smartest jedi of them all as he was the only one who seemed to question Anakin throughout the series, so it's still a shame to see him get stabbed in the back by Anakin.

gave it an A- when I first saw it, then upon second viewing, dropped it down to a B-, and it now stands at a B/B+ after about four viewings. The visuals are already starting to date (that's what happens when you do everything on a green-screen in a rapidly-improving era), and Hayden still is terrible for Anakin, but it at least brings the story full circle fabulously, and the last thirty or so minutes finally brings us back to the quality of the old films.

B / B+

A visually stunning movie, but comparing it to Crystal Skull (for reserected 80s franchises) it can't hold a candle to it. It is far easier to like the new Indy film rather than this.

B+ (mainly due to the stunning visual direction)

I still stand by the A- grade I gave it upon first viewing three years ago. Lucas's dialogue isn't nearly as bad as it's made out to be (or as it was in the other prequels), Christensen is mightily improved after his mediocre turn in the previous installment, and the final hour packs a punch of incredible strength.

And DIB, I'm sorry, but comparing this to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystall Skull makes absolutely no sense. The movies themselves are completely and totally different, and whereas Crystal Skull is a continuation of a franchise, ROTS is a prequel. Take out Lucas and the fact that their predecessors in the '80's, and they don't have a damn thing in common.

Just to level this thread out after the last few reviews, once again, this movie sucks.

It's definitely the best of the prequels, as faint as that praise is. But most of that is due to fanboy nostalgia.

It's clearly the prequel Lucas was most interested in making. There are several sequences in it that are really, really well-directed.

Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith

This film is a lot more interesting than Attack of the Clones and The Phantom Menace. It ties things together and has a sense of urgency to proceedings. It doesn't let up. An extra three years of acting experience (plus a more mature-looking hair style) really pays off for Hayden Christensen. He is automatically better from the get-go, but still not anywhere close to a respectable performance. By 2005, Natalie Portman had flourished into a more beautiful young woman too, so that was nicer than the previous instalments. Watching it tie everything up for a seamless jump to A New Hope is actually quite enjoyable and somewhat engrossing. The ending is good, but not without its limitations. The whole Darth Vader thing is obviously good, but the "Noooooooooooo!" scene is unbelievably bad, and thus highlights the franchises default corniness. The visual effects had improved enough by this stage that it was no longer a noticeable concern. In fact, Lucas should have displayed more patience and started with the entire prequel trilogy in 2005, not 1999. It would have paid dividends for the longevity and critical reputation of the franchise as a whole. The lightsaber play is still far too orchestrated with no real sense of threat. The Wookies are pretty much wasted here, and the only reason they are included is to evoke memories of A New Hope in the hope that nostalgia will affect people's enjoyment of Revenge of the Sith (in fact, this happened rather a lot in the whole prequel trilogy). A good part was when Windu and Palpatine had a duel. Actually, everything with Palpatine/Sidius was interesting, and watching the gradual turn to the dark side of Anakin is also rather exciting (if a little unjustified).

I hated the editing. The effects from scene to scene (usually it is just a Star Wars tradition to have a wipe), but here Lucas displayed all the typical effects you'd expect from Windows Movie Maker. Incredibly amateur way to make a blockbuster film, and it really stood out. But on the whole, this film is a marked improvement over the previous instalments. The opening sequence is lively and action-packed, ending with the murder of Count Dooku, and while I liked the fact that he died, the actual death (and what was shown) is fucking lame. One other annoyance is when the twins are born and Padme dies from "no will to live". I mean, come on, that is just ridiculous. Then the twins are separated and to make it difficult for Vader to locate them one is sent to the Indian looking dude (which is fine) but the other is sent to Tatooine (wait, what, isn't that the home planet of Darth Vader? How about if he goes home once over the next 20 years?). Not only is it on the same planet, but in the same fucking house!!! I understand they need to link it to A New Hope, but it is just very bad writing from the very beginning to have Anakin also grow up in that house. There were many stupid things like this throughout the series, so I guess Lucas just can't write for shit. It's things like this that just prove that Lucas wasn't this all-knowing Messiah that planned 9 movies in 1977. He's fucking making it up as he goes along.

Really great. You can criticize these prequels, but all of their criticism can be said about the OT as well.

A+

Cheesy dialogue. Mediocre acting. These things don't make them bad though.

Umm, yes they do. Star Wars are measured the same as all other movies, and cheesy dialogue and bad acting make them candidates for terrible movies. The thing with the original trilogy is they had atmosphere, and interest, and a will to entertain. The prequel trilogy is just 6+ hours of Lucas giving himself a pat on the back while he ties it to the original trilogy. It's a wishy-washy mess.

Revenge of the Sith's plot is far more interesting to me than The Dark Knight.
