Re: Whiplash (2014)
This was really thrilling and entertaining. I was thinking would have gone a bit further. Black Swan is similar to this movie, but something about this didn't strike the same chord as that did. Probably because Miles Teller didn't hallucinate about gruesomely murdering J.K. Simmons. I do feel like it could have gone further with its premise, and the ending was not what I expected at all; it worked out far too well for Teller and Simmons both. But I was entertained for sure.

I'll be seeing Selma tomorrow. So far my 2014 BP ranking is
1. Whiplash 2. The Imitation Game 3. American Sniper 4. Boyhood 5. The Grand Budapest Hotel

Re: Whiplash (2014)
The ending didn't work out well for Teller at all?
It was the same as Black Swan where the whole notion of being "perfect" basically destroyed his life.

Re: Whiplash (2014)
Nice, glad you finally saw it, and liked it! I don't think any of your criticism hampers the movie, but I can see where you're coming from. Still the best of 2014 for me.

Yeah, this is easily the best film of last year. Nothing else compares.

Re: Whiplash (2014)
I rewatched Whiplash on my flight back from Vegas. Still buzzing from my viewing of La La Land, and having already had one dose of Miles Teller earlier in my journey, I chose Whiplash without hesitation. I didn't disappoint. Still amazing. Simmons puts in such a performance, and that finale is among the best musical and visual storytelling endings ever.

**** / ***** (B)
Good movie propelled by J.K. Simmons' excellent performance. Chazelle keeps an amazing tempo of the movie throughout. Yet after it ended I wasn't blown away by it. It was just a cool movie about two highly unlikeable, highly motivated, highly opinionated personas clashing. Maybe it's the ending that finally puts them together in balance like Yin and Yang that feels slightly like a too feel good ending for what preceded it.

Decided to re-watch this and remains a perfect film, very tense, excellent performances and great score.
