Annie Hall
Annie HallQuote: Annie Hall is a 1977 American romantic comedy directed by Woody Allen from a screenplay co-written with Marshall Brickman and co-starring Diane Keaton. One of Allen's most popular and most honored films, it won four Academy Awards including Best Picture. Roger Ebert described it as "just about everyone's favorite Woody Allen movie".
Allen had previously been known as a maker of zany comedies; the director has described Annie Hall as "a major turning point", as it brought a new level of seriousness to his work.

It's the kind of movie I could find myself appreciating more as I grow, as I you know, get in relationships. Woody Allen is actually one director I still need to catch up on vastly, but I quite liked this as a start. The dialogues between the leads are of course great, I wasn't slapping my knees in laugther, but I enjoyed the jokes a lot.
I find it really interesting how it's kind of the antithesis on the typical Hollywood romance - Annie and Alvy weren't really in love at all, they dated, it didn't work, and it ended, life goes on. But there is something great about the way the relationship is portrayed, as if there's beauty in the way it was doomed to be a failure from the start. Annie is a footnote in Alvy's life, and while she didn't change anything, she remains a step along the way.
Good stuff.

I need to give this one another viewing at some point, but from what I can remember, it was good. Maybe one of Woody Allen's best? Hannah and Her Sisters might be able to top it, I dunno. Either way, Diane Keaton was great.

I actually got a chance to see this in theatres about two weeks ago and it pretty much delivered on what I have expected. How it could win the Best Picture Oscar over Star Wars is beyond me and likely hows the blatant prejudice against the fantasy genre that the Academy had back then. On the other hand, it was an unusual Oscar winner by itself, as despite serious undertones, it was still a real comedy winning the award. It's not even my favorite Woody Allen film, but it shows once again what a genius of a screenwriter Allen is. At least, I can agree with the Best Screenplay Oscar he has won. The lines and exchanges between Allen and Keaton are great. What I can not agre with, though is the Oscar win for Keaton. Not sure how the competition was that year, but it was a solid, but certainly not outstanding performance. To be honest, I found Allen to be better than her. Now he usually plays the same character in all of his films, but I think his Alvy in Annie Hall is this character played to perfection.
The best scenes? Cocaine sneezing and the dinner with Annie's family. Both had me laughing very hard.

Finally got around to seeing this...what a great, great film and makes a giant leap into my top films of all time.
The entire cast was simply golden. Christopher Walken's cameo was great, and it was so good to see Colleen Dewhurst again (RIP).
An easy A

Anyway, I saw this ages ago and loved it, but I want to check it out again after watching almost all of Woody's "Earlier, funnier" pictures, plus Stardust Memories (I still also have Interiors from the library). But yeah, I loved this. ****

Re: Annie Hall
Saw it, loved it. Allen really is a brilliant man, as clearly demonstrated here. Unfortunately the only prior experience I have of his is Vicky Christina Barcelona, which seems like the most middling predictable crap next to this. Allen's writing, while sometimes narcasistic, is both funny and poignant, making a lot of important points about society and humanity. However the directing is where the film excels, all the staging, interview type deals, the complicated timing and pacing of the film and the tricks he uses to examine peoples minds and keep the movie fresh and interesting are expertly handled and beautifully displayed here. It's something to be admired and loved. I thought Keaton was great but not one of the best things I've ever seen. Probably worthy that oscar she got, but certainly not to be compared with Bette Davis in "All About Eve" or Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard. Anyway, maybe the greatest true rom-com I have seen, an excellent film from top to bottom. 10/10

Just watched this in what feels like forever. Great film. Very funny and still as relatable as ever. I don't remember Jeff Goldblum and Christopher Wlaken having bit parts in it, so that was a nice treat this time around. I just love how it zips along with relationship lessons and observations, thick and fast, one after the other, and so many surprise laughs .. it's just gold. A-

I saw it some years ago, and don't recall it very well aside from remembering it to be quite humorous.
