Quote:
Dancer in the Dark is a 2000 Danish musical drama film directed by Lars von Trier and starring Icelandic singer Björk, Catherine Deneuve, David Morse, Vladica Kostic, Cara Seymour and Peter Stormare. The soundtrack for the film, released as the album Selmasongs, was written mainly by Björk, but a number of songs featured contributions from Mark Bell and the lyrics were by Lars Von Trier and Sjón. Three songs from Rodgers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music were also used in the film.

Dancer in the Dark is the third film in Lars von Trier's "Golden Heart Trilogy;" the previous two films were Breaking the Waves (1996) and The Idiots (1998). The film was an international co-production between companies based in several countries: Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, United States, United Kingdom, France, Sweden, Finland, Iceland and Norway. It was shot with a handheld camera, and was somewhat inspired by a Dogme 95 look.

Dancer in the Dark premiered at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival to standing ovations and controversy and was awarded the Palme d'Or, along with the Best Actress award for Björk. The song "I've Seen It All," with Thom Yorke, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song.

A very weird film, but Björk was excellent.

One of my favorite films of all time. Depressing yet powerful, Björk was great, and songs were perfectly intertwined with the story. A+.

Bjork's singing was god awful. I tried to watch it on cable the other day but flipped the channel as soon as she started singing. She sounded like a cat being choked to death

Bjork's singing was indescribably amazing and made this film a masterpiece. She gave the best performance of the decade hands down.

I'm going to see this very soon and my excitement is becoming palpable. Selmasongs (Bjork's soundtrack to this) is one of the best albums of the last decade.

I don't know why I said this hahahaah. Now I need to rewatch this film to see if I believe that. (If I had said top ten, I wouldn't have had a doubt, but number one, hands down? hahahhaha.)

Watched it. Have no idea what to think. Need to watch again immediately (that's a good sign, right?).

I don't know if it's the best, but definitely in my Top 10.

Such a good movie. I have yet to see it a 2nd time, maybe it's time I bought the DVD? But it left such an impression on me, I can still see the ending in my mind now that I'm actually thinking about it. This movie destroyed me.

The trailer alone should convince you enough:

I liked the music and the performances in the movie but the story is as depressing as it gets. My gosh, when her money got stolen by that fake friend of hers and than she gets blamed for his death. Jeez. That was a downer if ever.

grade - B

Lars Von Trier is a cancerous polyp on the large intestine of cinema.

I consider it to be in the same vein as Magnolia. It's one hell of a depressing movie that shouldn't work and fall in its moroseness, but somehow it hits hard. Maybe because I love Bjork.

A brilliant, haunting film! The best musical ever. Bjork is simply amazing.

Say what you want about Von Trier, but I've only seen two of his movies at this point (Dogville and this) and both are favorites of mine.

honestly one of the most hopeful movies i've seen...even an ending so depressing can't snuff out such beautiful internal fantasy

and the "i've seen it all" scene is so haunting i was on the edge of crying with astonishment

99/100, A+

I prefer the term "misery porn." More evocative.

Took me 24 years to see this...

Such a downer lol. After hearing about this for so long I think I was expecting something different but although Idk if I was much a fan of the songs Bjork was indeed very good in this.
