 JCVD
JCVD Quote: JCVD is a crime-based comedy drama directed by French-Tunisian director Mabrouk El Mechri, and starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as a semi-fictionalized version of himself, a down-and-out action star whose family and career are crumbling around him as he is caught in the middle of a post office heist in his hometown of Brussels, Belgium.
The film was screened on 4 June 2008 in Belgium and France, at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival (Midnight Madness), and at the Adelaide Film Festival on 20 February 2009. It was distributed by Peace Arch Entertainment from Toronto and opened in New York and select cities on 7 November 2008.

Here's a copy of my review from the Foreign & Independent forum... Bradley Witherberry wrote: JCVD is JCVD!Quote: Meta-movie downtown, and she done said to me: I'm my surface and I'm my depths. So I nodded furiously. It's nice to see a meta-movie now and again - - it's an under-visited genre to be sure. So with the theatrical release of JCVD we surely must rejoice! ...and this is only the second Jean-Claude Van Damme film I've ever seen (after the under-rated B-flick Timecop which I caught at the drive-in). Very nicely constructed and argued - - it's a visual doctoral thesis on the subject of self-reference. JCVD outdoes himself...∑∂∆out of 5.

 Re: JCVD
9/10 -> A-
Surprisingly one hell of a movie. All of Van Damme's "career" paid off just for this movie.
My only problem was that the main story was unnecesarily cut and reshuffled ala Memento-style. That's the case especially with the first and second part of the main story, as there is no suspension of did he or didn't he do it (we all know he didn't do it) and considering that the second part is much better and 80% repeats everything that happened, the first one then comes as a 20 minute waste of time.
Besides that I can't really say how much enjoyable this movie was.

 Re: JCVD
Holy crap and a side of bacon this was brilliant!
So tightly constructed it leaves zero plot holes with dialogue exchanges that are completely natural, the way everyone reacts to Van Damme is genuine and rather funny. Then there was all those great single shot takes and the improived sections like Van Damme's inner monologue interlude that plays out exactly like it should that of a man just rambling about whatever is coming into his head.
I loved the way the film doubled back on itself in the second half although unlike be.redy I quite liked how it had already been revealed he wasn't the real criminal which gave me the chance to be more relaxed as I watched and not having to try and spot some smart gotcha moment.
Oh and Jean Claude can act, mark the wall with a rusty nail!

Yes. It's still one of the best movies of last year.

 Re: JCVD
A bit of a missed opportunity - the opening scene is brilliant, but the rest of the film fails to capitalize on it - but it's still pretty intriguing. Van Damme proves he can act after all.
