Cache
http://www.worldofkj.com/reviews/Galia/%20Cache.php
Quote: In typical French cinema aesthetic and style, Georges and Anne start to fight. Not melodramatic tears and snarls, just the usual bickering and screaming long since established as a polished form by the French New Wave. Thankfully, Haneke does not tie his family trauma to their own alienation from each other alone, but he also works the story into larger social context. His directorial sense of relating national events through the microcosm of the Laurent family saves <i>Cache</i> from being wasted energy and talent. Cache only grows in intensity from its flimsy foundations, and the finale is both shocking and meaningful without being completely infantilizing.

Anatomy of a Murder
http://www.worldofkj.com/reviews/Galia/ ... Murder.php
Quote: Lt. Manion’s motive lies squarely on the shoulders and missing underwear of his wife. With great intensity throughout the trial the questioning shifts towards Laura and in so doing addresses nuanced new ground. Unlike numerous other silver screen trials that adopt a point and counter-point style of presenting evidence in a case, <i>Anatomy of a Murder</i> doesn’t question the crime scene so much as the events leading up to the fateful shot. Lt. Manion commits a premeditative crime under extreme duress. His and Laura’s mundane actions become exponentially more significant, and their significant actions become the landscape against which they are ultimately both grilled under civic scrutiny.

The Matador
http://www.worldofkj.com/reviews/Galia/Matador.php
Quote: And there’s water a plenty in <i>The Matador</i> as long as its 80 proof or up. The drinks are almost the 4/4 beat that keeps <i>The Matador</i> on track. Mixed into the fray with one too many bar shots are ample amounts of anxiety, quite a few taught scenes of assassinations, plenty of tears, and a few random moments of heavier drama. Danny’s story is a bit depressing, but it fleshes out the otherwise weak pivotal plot line. <i>The Matador</i> attempts to enlighten audiences about men who are not so dissimilar as they appear to be. Men who upon reflecting about their pasts can pull from within themselves emotions and actions that surprise even themselves. It’s all a bit much, tossed together in frenetic bright colors and choppy editing, but it still works.

Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story
http://www.worldofkj.com/reviews/Galia/ ... Shandy.php
Quote: There is a fine line between genius and chaos. Apparently, Michael Winterbottom’s <i>Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story</i>, just about straddles that line with a weight dangling off each leg. Where it lands whilst struggling under its own weight is anyone’s guess, but it’s certainly entertaining to watch the <i>Cock and Bull Story</i> teeter back and forth like a tightrope walker in a hideously gaudy outfit. That weight is the ambitions of lead actor Steve Coogan, who plays himself playing Tristram, Laurence Sterne’s infamous contrived mock-memoir character. Confused yet? You should be.

It got a two theatre release this weekend. I'm sure it will expand. Crowd was pretty large for it. I tried to be a little more colourful in my review this time around, to reflect the sort of homage to farcical Renaissance protagonists. Did you like it?

Yeah it was really good " Confused yet? You should be." It seem like it has a bit of parallels with the Producers
I'm going to try something new Galia, Just so I learn to clearly articulate my views on movies as well as you do, I'm going to respond to your reviews after I see a movie you have written about
Hope you dont mind me potentially cluttering up your thread

As always, great Review Galia I agree with most of your review, though I gave the movie a higher grade than you. I give it a strong 9/10 an A Best movie I’ve seen this year So now these are the points that I shall respond too
Quote: Match Point is a strong film, but it is not a visionary one. Allen spends most of his energy on exemplary execution, in which he is successful in recapturing the commonness of the world with his uncommon touch. Yet one cannot help but notice that his cast of individuals lack depth, personality, or even the ability to personify class struggle. I don’t believe I have ever seen a Woody Allen movie before this one :$ So I cannot compare his other works; however I really liked the execution of this movie. Considering that I do not like Opera, I really really liked how he played the Opera music with that scratchy noise (like it’s being plaid from an old record player). I really liked the acting, but I found something incredibly funny with the way in which I found the characters to be at their best. Scarlett was easily at her best in the beginning of the movie and, to me, her character started to slowly deterioriorate in likeability as the movie progressed. Jonathan Rhys Meyer’s character was the opposite, at the beginning he was rather bland and I thought he had a crush on the rich guy at first, and then he started getting amazing towards the end, especially after he shoots them. The part in this movie that I felt was a bit drawn out and tacky was the conversation between Chris and Nola before he “goes†to his Greece trip and during it, when he responds with something like “I Can’t break it off with her before she sleeps it will be bad for her!†and Nola just keeps screaming LOl. The audience laughed at that a bit. The person who stood out the most to me was Emily Mortimer. She was amazing in this movie and extremely believable and just played the role so perfectly. Quote: But unlike Allen’s older intimacy with human psychology, Allen has a broader point to make with his newest Match, and the film is not about neurosis, anxiety, or complexity of characters who stray in life. Match Point is about luck, it is about a secure lifestyle, and it is about the events that play out in two years of Chris’s life Yes! I found that as well! I have never read Dostoevsky however, just judging from the themes that were quite evident in this movie, I am pretty certain that this novel deals with similar issues. I saw that book twice throughout the movie and I was like…hmmmmm I think that Allen may be subtlety telling or reinforcing something. The same could be said with his choice in opera music; though I understood absolutely nothing about it. If that is the case then this movie truly transcends into another realm.. I love subtlety is movies EDIT: Quote: Allen’s newest film wraps up in a nice little bow-tie that earlier creations never did….That ribbon is attractive, however, and Allen lays down his tracks so subtly in Match Point that Chris’s (un)expected turns manipulate audience expectations. Allen is intelligent for invoking expectations of tennis match fortune through the constant homage to the back-and-forth flight of a ball over a net. That we gasp not once but twice at “twists†invoked by the ball is a testament to Allen’s finesse. Still, Match Point is as engaging as watching uninspired top players work through a high profile game. It still exhibits strength, skill, technique, and drama, but the film will not remain the talk of the town for weeks afterwards.
The ending was great I was so getting ready for someone to find the ring and that would be the piece in the puzzle that would bring retribution and the movie would end or something even more “noir†but it was perfect! Just when you think that wow, the guy can’t get any luckier that the ball has finally dropped on his court (like the ring did), it turns out that it helped him even more Great great ending! Since I greatly shelter myself from these types of dramas, I may be talking about this one for weeks afterwards
Ohh I saw a great trailer before this with Scarlett johanson and Helen Hunt and it looked soooo good, did you see it Galia?? I’m going to try to find it.

I actually really want to see A Good Woman also. I tried to sign up for advanced screenings for this week, but there were two problems. The tickets were already sold out, and it was on Wednesday (when I have class). So alas, I have to wait until everyone else. :-(

It plays without sound.
It probably has to do with WMP, which never seems to work right on my mac. I'll keep on looking... maybe a WMP update will help.
Thanks.
Helen Hunt looks great. She's of my favorite actresses and I've really missed her recently.

MANDERLAY
http://www.worldofkj.com/reviews/Galia/Manderlay.php
Quote: <i>Manderlay</i> pushes the question of responsibility and history, it stretches its reach beyond the usual readings and asks the “noble†white frustrations in giving a man a fish versus teaching a man to fish only to wonder why that man still doesn’t fish even after being given the equipment and training. It is not an easy question, and it is best left at just that…a question. A moment to ponder these isolated plantation workers and their decisions with no one clear answer. Von Trier does not leave good enough alone however, and here he turns his theatre/screen production away from probing the issues to pointing an archaic finger. <i>Manderlay</i> does not end at the gates of reckoning, but rather on a pompous and shallow note.

Hmmmm... so would you recommend it?
I've been looking forward to it since Dogville first came out.

I'd recommend it more as something to dwell on than the picture itself. If that makes sense. A bit problematic, but still very ambitious, so you'll get something out of it, even if its disdain for the movie. There are films, like, say, F4, where if you don't like them there's little to discuss. Unlike Manderlay, where evn those who dislike it, it is so demanding, that those reasons will be as worthy of consideration as those of people who did.
My grades are not based on my reception of them as much as markers, or "push" for people to see something in theatres. B range means alot of people will get something out of it (good or bad) and should check it out. C+ is about the level where I say, don't bother unless you're really niche (and easy on the tenets) of a genre. B+ means many people should at least check it out, and A means nearly all people should consider viewing it. A, goes with out saying, everyone should watch it.
Hope that helps?
I've never seen Dogville, so the aesthetics of manderlay were new to me and ninvigorating. As you said you like Von Trier, i would definately say you should check this one out. For people that hate him, or watched Big Momma's House 2, I'd pretty much say don't bother. Hence the B.

 You haven't seen Dogville?
Although it's a trilogy, there isn't a continuing plot. But even still, suprised you missed that one. I loved it. Alot of people hated it. That's basically the only Von Trier film I've seen; so, I wouldn't consider myself a fan
If I decide to take a break from reading/studying next weekend, I'll go see it. Not much else to see now that I saw New World and Transamerica.

The Color Purple
http://www.worldofkj.com/reviews/Galia/ColorPurple.php
Quote: Yet perhaps it is best that the focus of <i>The Color Purple</i> remained on Celie’s private struggles and her need to establish herself as a woman worthy of demanding respect? For once she reaches just such a realization about herself the film quickly descends into an all too saccharine frosting on the rich cake.
Thankfully however, the unevenness of film manages to absorb even the sugar, and in fact the inconsistencies provide a rare glimpse into the fledgling start of the director’s hand in drama, and a fresh cast’s enthusiasm and paramount careers.

Set It Off
http://www.worldofkj.com/reviews/Galia/SetItOff.php
Quote: Enter the rough-and-tough lesbian Cleo (Queen Latifah), who proffers up the muscle and cars for the four’s eventual downward criminal spiral. Cleo is an interesting woman who in some respects is the creative emphasis behind Cary Gray’s story, and in other ways is the most frustrating character. Like Frankie she has only herself to worry about, and yet she operates in the all to real here-and-now psychology that at one point prompts her to say she has no vision outside of her immediate life. She also has a silent, sexy girlfriend, whom the other women are confused by. The couple operates similar to their male counterparts in other crime films, and Cleo even buys her ultimate accessory a new outfit with the first reward of the four’s efforts.

Helen Hunt is miscast in A Good Woman, but to be honest, there's nothing good about the movie to begin with. There is a reason why the film too 3 years to be released.

Little Fish
http://www.worldofkj.com/reviews/Galia/LittleFish.php
Quote: <i>Little Fish</i> weaves images of drugs (packaged in small blue fish-shaped capsules) and Tracy’s swimming ritual together to heighten the sense of dislocation. Everyone involved treads theoretical water as they try to keep their heads above the waves. The association has a long reach, and her daily laps are as much about being a fish-out-of-water gasping for air as they are about the swimming haze of drug induced calmness. While the imagery is a tad blunt, its not so condescending as to elicit resentment. The film is tasteful yet easily accessible and ultimately uplifting.
