Do you know those numbers offhand so I don't have to look it up?

Bewitched sold out the 7:40pm and 10:10pm showings at my theater. It's odd, because the 10:10pm show was already sold out when I arrived for the 7:40pm show, so I'd guess that's a great sign for the weekend (and legs, considering mostly elders buy tickets in advance at the box office).

The Stepford Wives made around $21 million and Anchorman scored around $28 million opening weekend.

Saw Bewitched at a 9:50 Screening:
Trailers:
Red Eye - Looks good, a little talk.
Must Love Dogs - Looks dull (I'm so sick of seeing this trailer).
Fun with Dick and Jane - Hard to tell. A few laughs.

Film:
Starts out funny (loved the line "Your last movie was the only DVD to sell no copies.") but falters completely as the film progresses to the point that I just couldn' wait for it to end by the totally abrupt ending. The audience must of thought the same thing because laughs started strong before tailing off drastically by the film's end.

Umm, a bit disappointing, yet I think this could still scrounge up 6~7 million

4:50 (340 seater) 25% sold
7:40 (340 seater) 66% sold
10:10 (340 seater) 93% sold

Now we're talking, this performed pretty well on one of our big screens, so I say it has a shot to beat Herbie today

Batman Begins

11:40 (235 seater) 21% sold

1:35 (155 seater) 24% sold
4:00 (155 seater) 8% sold
6:35 (155 seater) 29% sold

That's more than double the attendance of Hilary Duff's.

Cinderella Man

2:45 (85 seater) 26% sold
5:45 (85 seater) 42% sold
8:45 (85 seater) 73% sold

This movie is just struggling to survive.

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

11:00 (170 seater) 11% sold
1:50 (170 seater) 30% sold
7:50 (170 seater) 62% sold

The sisterhood will not be denied.

Honeymooners

9:35 (90 seater) 34% sold

Blah.

This was a terribly slow Friday. I think our area is having high school graduations, so take my crowd report with a grain of salt. Anyhow, nothing much was kicking except Batman and Land of the Dead. I'm hoping for most people's sake that Bewitched is doing great elsewhere.

Land Of The Dead
10:05 PM at Cinemark 16
150 seat auditorium, 90% full

The crowd was incredibly (and surprisingly) geeked out. We even had two "zombies". So, the reactions to the trailers are a bit skewed.

Trailers:

The Devil's Rejects - Mixed reaction. I heard some claps and some "Oh, please" type comments.
Shitty looking BMX movie - No reaction.
Shitty looking Samuel L. Jackson "comedy" - Some laughs from a guy i'm pretty sure was high.
The Skeleton Key - No reaction. I have high hopes for this one.
Dark Water - No reaction. Should be great.
The Cave - Lots of laughs at the "Team of expert cave explorers" line, but I think it looks good. I've heard it's another PG13 butcher job, though.
Serenity - Surprising reaction. Clapping. One guy said "FIREFLY" really loud before the title card came up, only to see it was called Serenity. One guy said "SUCKS" after the clapping died down. 'Twas funny.

Movie:

Oh, man. I don't even know where to start with this one. A mixed bag, for shizzle. I'm giving it a B for now, but i'll have a full review in Everyone's A Critic up later. The crowd went nuts for it, though, which should be a good sign for legs. Lots of cheering at all the extremely gory bits (the belly button ring brought the house down), and some clapping at Savini's cameo. Like I said, full review later, but I was both disappointed and pleased.

I'd say give it another chance makeshift. I spent the first half of the film stunned I was watching a brand new Romero zombie film on the big screen.

Just came back from Batman Begins' showing at 10:15PM. It was sold out. So was the 9:30PM show, as I saw when buying the ticket. Other sold-outs around that time included 9:40PM for Bewitched, 9:55PM for Land of the Dead, and 9:50PM for The Longest Yard.

Great to see the full reports again J. Here is what happened at my theater.

Bewitched
1145 (600 seater) - 5% full
1225 (400 seater) - 7% full
105 (150 seater) - 44% full
145 (150 seater) - 45% full
225 (600 seater) - 11% full
305 (400 seater) - 23% full
345 (150 seater) - 40% full
425 (150 seater) - 40% full
505 (600 seater) - 10% full
545 (400 seater) - 15% full
625 (150 seater) - 49% full
705 (150 seater) - 45% full
745 (600 seater) - 20% full
825 (moved to a 150 seater, thanks to Rize) - Sold Out
905 (150 seater) - Sold Out
945 (150 seater) - Sold Out
1025 (moved to a 200 seater thanks to Land of the Dead) - Sold Out.
1105 (150 seater) - Sold Out
1145 (150 seater) - Sold Out
1220 (150 seater) - 46% full
(Great performance, too bad they moved it to smaller theaters. Tomorrow, we are definetly moving these shows to the Herbie theaters. about 7 million Friday seems to be where this is going)

Herbie
1135 (300 seater) - 4% full.
1245 (300 seater) - 17% full
120 (400 seater) - 12% full.
215 (300 seater) - 13% full.
325 (300 seater) - 11% full.
400 (400 seater) - 12% full.
455 (300 seater) - 14% full.
605 (300 seater) - 13% full.
645 (400 seater) - 17% full.
735 (300 seater) - 30% full.
845 (300 seater) - 42% full.
925 (moved to 175 seater thanks to Land of the Dead) - 41% full.
1015 (300 seater) - 15% full.
1120 (150 seater) - 22% full.
1205 (175 seater) - 1% full
(Now you see why Bewitched is moving in some of these theaters. This is only about twice as better than Thursday, so 3-4 million friday seems to be where this will go)

Land of the Dead
1230 (200 seater) - 22% full
200 (175 seater) - 26% full
300 (200 seater) - 26% full
430 (175 seater) - 28% full
535 (200 seater) - 44% full
700 (175 seater) - 66% full
805 (200 seater) - Sold Out.
930 (moved to a 400 seater) - Sold Out.
1035 (moved to a 600 seater) - 74% full.
1210 (400 seater) - 68% full
(Great Performance, I see a 4-6 million Friday based on this)

Rize
1200 (200 seater) - 12% full
210 (200 seater) - 23% full
420 (200 seater) - 27% full
640 (200 seater) - Sold Out.
830 (added) (400 seater) - 60% full
900 (200 seater) - Sold Out.
1050 (added) (400 seater) - 59% full.
1115 (200 seater) - 23% full
(Yikes, this was way beyond our expectations. We could see a big PTA for this)

As for Holdovers, Batman sold out the 810 (150 seater), the 930 (135 seater), and the 1010 (250 seater). Overall, like JMorphins theater, I see about a 50-60% drop for Friday.

Mr and Mrs Smith sold out the 740 (150 seater), the 820 (175 seater), the 935 (250 seater), the 1040 (150 seater), and the 1125 (175 seater). Still going strong at our theater.

As for who won, it was dead even between Betwiched, Land of the Dead and Batman (though Batman had the advantage of 2 more screens than Bewitched and had bigger theaters, so bewitched did the better job, but Land of the Dead, because it was only on 2 screens, was definetly the winner in the per theater basis). Overall, unlike JMorphins theater, we were pretty busy. In fact, this was the busiest Friday this year, so expect good numbers.

Scott, the best Friday of the year? Even bigger than the Memorial Day weekend Friday?!

AUSTRALIA - Saturday Night Report

Almost 9pm at the momment and Batman has been the star tonight with strong occupancy rates in all sessions here in Melbourne.

7pm - 70-80%
8pm - 80% to SOLD OUT
9pm - 90% to SOLD OUT

Batman is still playing in the larger theatres but its playing on less sessions per day than Madagascar....about 9 sessions per day vs. Madagascar which has about 13 on average.

Madagascar has been playing pretty poorly tonight at Village Cinemas.....it's barely registering 50% occupancy in the night sessions.

Worst still, Herbie Fully Loaded has been stuck around the 10-20% region all week....terrible.

Of course this is only a small snapshot in Melbourne, but i'm expecting a good hold for Batman Begins here in Australia, perhaps 35-40% drop

Yes, thats only because of the inflated Friday matinee (matinees were slow during the memorial friday). Also, Memorial Day Friday was focused strictly on the three openers, this Friday had alot more spillover business from other movies.

7:10 PM Grand Prairie 18
50% full in a 351 seater

Trailers:

The Devil's Rejects .
The Man
The Skeleton Key
Serenity

Movie:

There are some funny bits. Pillsbury's line about 50,000 cars in Samoa is the best. Quite gory and Romero shows a little bit of imagination which makes this a little better than the average run-of-the mill zombie movies.

B-

P.S: The parking lot was completely full when the movie let out and this theater does not even have Bewitched. Most of the movies were at or near capacity

1:20 show, 300-seat theater, about 65% filled.

Trailers
In Her Shoes
Wedding Crashers
Must Love Dogs
The Dukes of Hazzard
Fun with Dick and Jane
Rent

Bewitched was an average, occasionally pleasant movie, but I was expecting more. A lot of the comedy bits in the film come across as strained, and Nora & Delia Ephron's script is so shallowly written that the actors are forced to utter witless dialogue half the time. Although they have no chemistry, which makes the final half hour of the film hard to swallow, Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell are both reasonably effective. Kidman is a bit miscast but makes the most of her performance; it helps that she looks cute as a button. The amazingly hilarious Ferrell seems muted by his role here, as if Nora Ephron was afraid to let him be funnier. The supporting cast doesn't help matters. Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine are utterly wasted in their roles, Jason Schwartzman gives his typical one-note performance, and Kristin Chenoweth has the distinction of having the most irritating supporting performance in a film this year. Either way, Kidman and Ferrell are affable enough that their talent and appeal shine through even when the script is letting them down. Although Bewitched isn't a bad film, it's a very forgettable one. C+/C

Mmm, I'm sorry about that Libs, I know how much you were excited for this one. I'll even spare you from saying "I told you so"... woops, too late. ;)

Land of the Dead, 7:45 PM show, sold out. Then again, they put it in a 200-300 seater, so I wasn't that surprised. Crowd LOVED it though. Me and my friends actually got most of the last tickets (some of us weren't able to, about 15 of us, so the others bought tickets for Batman), and missed some of the trailers. However, I did see the ones for:

Serenity (One person cheered, someone else yelled "SHUT THE F*CK UP" which got lots of laughter)
The Cave (Lots of "Hell yeah"s and "I'm there"s)
Supercross (Some boos, ouch)

This had to be one of the wilder crowds I've ever been in. They were really jazzed throughout and cheered at a number of deaths and cameos (especially Tom Savini). The movie itself was damn good, though not exactly a classic. I'd actually say I preferred the new Dawn of the Dead, 28 Days Later, and Shaun of the Dead to this, but would put it above any other zombie film since Romero's time (or at least any that come to mind). The cast was very solid, including a somewhat toned down but still very malicious Dennis Hopper and the as usual great John Leguizamo in what I'd say is his most layered performance that he's had thanks to being given a juicier role then usual (no pun intended). Simon Baker was also very likable and solid as the lead, as was the Big Daddy zombie who was absolutely great. For now I'd say it's a solid B, but that grade may go up when I have more time to think about it. What it lacks in sheer entertainment it makes up for in being a genuinely good movie and one with some good things to say about social class.

Even after some major downgrading, Bewitched still couldn't pull off one sold out show at our theater, SAD!

Herbie

11:10 (225 seater) 20% sold / 11% sold
12:50 (135 seater) 35% sold / 61% sold

12:40 (165 seater) 35% sold / (340 seater) 20% sold

Here is my theater Report on Saturday.

Batman was the only impressive performer tonight, it sold out the 530 (150 seater), the 810 (150 seater), the 850 (150 seater), the 930 (135 seater), the 1010 (250 seater), and the 1130 (150 seater). Overall, it had the biggest increase of all the movies (48% to be exact). Expect a huge increase today.

Bewitched increase a nice 22% at this theater, thanks to the upgrading of theaters. It sold out the 825 (150 seater), the 905 (200 seater), and the 945 (300 seater).

As for Herbie, well despite the downgrading of theaters, we still did not manage any sold out shows. It increased only 12% at this theater, signalling Friday inflation.

Land of the Dead dropped 14% at this theater, not even selling out a show. We managed a 70% full show ina 300 seater, and a 60% full show in a 400 seater, and a 51% full show in our 600 seater.

Mr and Mrs. Smith increase only 16% at this theater, since Friday was already impressive enough as it was. It sold out the 740 (150 seater), the 820 (175 seater), the 935 (200 seater), the 1040 (150 seater), and the 1125 (175 seater).

Rize, which did so inpressive yesterday, nosedived 40% from Friday (that is the biggest drop from Friday to Saturday we have ever had). The 640, which was sold out yesterday, was only 58% full in the same theater, and the 830, which was 60% full yesterday, was only 33% full in the same theater. Not a good sign for longtivity.

Overall, after a impressive Friday, we had an unspectacular Saturday. Business was up only 11% from yesterday, thanks to Rize. I am very dissappointed.

About 35 - 40% full
Grade: B

Mr. and Mrs. Smith
7:05 PM
About 35 - 40% full (approx. same size seater as Bewitched)
Grade: B-

Herbie
9:45 PM
About 10 - 15% full
Grade: B-

I was somewhat disappointed, as the three movies were just okay. Hopefully, WOTW will be better. Other than that, I have a free ticket for Dukes (But I'm not particularly looking forward to that movie. My interest in the TV series had to do with: a) a crush on John Schneider, b) The General Lee, and c) a fondness for James Best. Only one of those three is in the movie. I do like the idea of Burt Reynolds as Boss Hogg. It seems fitting to me. But Burt and the General Lee are the only things in the movie that appeal to me.)

Mr. and Mrs. Smith
5:15, 300-seater, SOLD OUT

Trailers
In her shoes (no reaction, looks OK)
Into the Blue (good reaction)
Fantastic Four (great reaction)

I had to see it for a third time since my friends hadn't seen it, but I certainly didn't mind. The movie is, of course, still awesome. And we actually wanted to go the 4:15 show, but that was sold out as well. This is probably the first time I haven't gotten tickets to the show that I wanted. Oh well... :)
