Predict The Brothers Grimm (Gilliam - August release)
Trailer here:
http://movies.aol.com/franchise/exclusi ... rimm_movie
Terry Gilliam's new flick. Does this have mainstream appeal or does it look like it will be DVD/Cult classic fodder mainly? Personally I found it great, though I was skeptical at first with the corny "In a world where..." announcer and a few formulaic plot elements (shades of ghostbusters). By the end though, it looked to me pretty fun to me, definitely looking forward to it. But will it make any money?
This is the comingsoon.net info to help you predict:
Release Date: August 26, 2005
Studio: Dimension Films
Director: Terry Gilliam
Screenwriter: Ehren Kruger
Starring: Matt Damon, Heath Ledger, Jonathan Pryce, Monica Bellucci, Lena Headey, Peter Stormare, Mackenzie Cook, Richard Ridings
Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Thriller
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (for violence, frightening sequences and brief suggestive material)

Well the trailer shows a lot of promise, but it's pretty horribly edited. The TV spots will make the big difference. With Matt Damon on fire and Heath Ledger rapidly becoming the new box office poison king, it could really go either way. 25/85 or 8/20 could result, depending how the marketing is handled.

So true about this statement not to mention he looks like the other Box office poison star Val Kilmer. I think Terry
Gilliam's offbeat style would also prevent it from being a surefire hit and besides the only real hit that Terry Gilliam directed was 12 Monkeys. He also made one of the biggest bombs of the 80s called Adventures of Baron Moonchauser. 13/38 million
The trailer looks great btw and I really look forward to the movie

I'll bump this, if marketing is decent it'll probably do good. Competition is horrible, Cave will not beat it for the weekend, the best Cave will do is Anaconda 2 #'s. Grimm looks like something kids and adults can both enjoy and if they play it out right it can do well. I've heard nothing of the film yet though, I had no idea if I didnt check up that it's coming out on the 26th but im gonna bank on marketing really picking up in a week or so.
Opening - 22m
Final - 78m

I've seen no marketing at all for this one. No trailers (other than online), no commercials...nothing.
$8 million opening, $20 million total.

Agreed, no real marketing, I expect it will do horribly. But on the plus side there was a 3 page Time magazine article on Terry Gilliam this last week, with positive comments about Grimm, saying it has some "pythonesque" humor through it, calling the parts set in the forest "spellbinding" and saying the actress Lena Headey is "gorgeous" and has a "star making turn" in her role as a young witch.
I hope the marketing picks up, it looks pretty fun to me.

Sounds like The Order with Heath Ledger from last September. Should also follow a similar path:
Opening: $6.5 million
Domestic Total: $18 million

The movie is hard to predict for me. It looks really good from thre trailers and if I didn't know it better, I'd suppose it gets a good deal of marketing in the States. But apparently not, as you say guys. Which is a pity. Well, here's hoping for somewhat good legs.
Opening weekend - $9.2 million
Total gross - $31 million

The trailer is far too quirky (toad-licking is involved) to get a large audience. I also expect Miramax to give it only token marketing as they've done with 'The Great Raid' (Maybe a sneak preview the weekend prior to it opening as well) and thus it is going to have to rely on the untested (outside of Bourne) starpower of Damon as Ledger doesn't have starpower, as evidenced by the performance of last year's 'The Order.'
As of now:

I'm torn on this one. On one hand, there's been zero marketing and I haven't even seen the trailer in theaters yet. But on the other hand, people seem to be yearning for a fun adventure flick (which is why Sahara did so well). So if they actually start up the marketing, it could really break out. I get a Pirates of the Caribbean vibe from this movie.

All the Gilliam fans who've seen it say it ranges from "not great" to "awful".

There have been increasing ads for this both on TV and online, it no longer looks like the studio is dumping it, well made ads too.

I've started seeing a ton of ads, but they don't convey the film's tone well at all. I realize this is a Terry Gilliam movie, but the movie is unclear about what the film really is, which is not usually a good sign for success.

I've found in the ads that I've seen, they've played up the adventure flick side of it, which is smart. I'm still gonna predict low, but I really feel it has break out potential.

is it supposed to a kids flick?
like i understand its an action/thriller blah
and the fantasy aspect
but are they trying to aim this at young children
or older adults?

I saw snippets of it on Jay Leno and it had a Princess Bride look too it. Quirky, decent, but not great.
Damon and Ledger will cancel each other out.
I'll put a postitive 16/60 on it, but this will make its profit on video.

Okay, seeing the previews I see, I say it will attract opening weekend numbers, but legs will probably be crap.
Open: $19.2m
Total: $46.7m
