Re: COVID-19 and box office
Why are movie theaters taking such a huge amount of blame for this? You'd figure events like sports and concerts, which hold thousands of people at once compared to the hundred or so in a movie, would be a bigger focus.

First U.S. death just confirmed in Seattle. Washington State Health Dept. and Trump expected to make statements this afternoon.

Those are also concerns, with sporting events and concerts being cancelled. But consider how many millions of people attend the movies on a given day. I wouldn't say theaters are being blamed, but they surely need to have a plan in place.

Schools, daycares, and public transportation, grocery stores are obviously bigger targets. Costco has like crazy sanitation stations for every cart now

France also hit 100 mark overnight. Surprisingly it's spreading faster in developed countries.

Re: COVID-19 and box office
Youtube and other streaming services should see a rise in viewership. People would prefer spending more time at home to going out. The government should put health concerns above all others including economic impact and approval ratings. There were reports very few tests for the virus were administered and protective gear was in short supply ( https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-health-usa-preparedness/mixed-messages-test-delays-hamper-u-s-coronavirus-response-idUSKCN20L36Z). Health authorities should accelerate testing for the virus at hospitals and clinics and report the numbers. All levels of government should alert the public if there is potential community transmission in certain areas. People who feel sick should be able to leave work and stay home. Online learning and working from home should be encouraged during the outbreak.

Re: COVID-19 and box office
According to a French box office tweet, pre-sales for NO TIME TO DIE are no longer possible online, fueling speculation that the James Bond movie will be postponed. Meanwhile (French) WB pushed back a French movie to September, which was supposed to open next week...

Disney must postpone Milan’s int’l rollout. Not just China.
It looks like the number of new cases for the virus have plateaued in China though they are months away from it dying out, assuming no new surges. Then there is the lingering fear factor.

Re: COVID-19 and box office
That's what I expected for the last couple of weeks...
Other studios can risk opening a movie in March, April or May, but for MGM it is the single most important movie for half a decade...

You think MULAN is still opening in March?
BTW, death toll in Italy rose to 107 today...

Re: COVID-19 and box office
If it gets delayed then we'll probably get an announcement this week. It seems like its too late but who knows.
If they do Mulan I say give it Soul's date and move Soul to Fall.

CORONA ATTACKS HOLLYWOOD! First major victim announced...
Yeah. The new Bond just moved to November 25th. Because of Corona.
This big move won't be the last. This will be an interesting year to follow.

Re: CORONA ATTACKS HOLLYWOOD! First major victim announced..
This has to be tough for studios. Not knowing how long this threat may persist and whether or not to move their films. I highly doubt any of them really want to move their lucrative summer releases.

Re: COVID-19 and box office
Variety article says Disney is sticking to Mulan's date. This could be a real clusterfuck if cases get really bad in the US but we'll see.

If Disney is still sticking with it... I wonder if they think Mulan wasn't going to do as well as they thought, so releasing it now they have a built in excuse for when it doesn't do well?

I was initially thinking they want to see how Onward performs (which will also disappoint relative to Pixar BO standards).

Re: COVID-19 and box office
Hmm Bond's move makes sense the movie makes more money in European markets which have seen a spike recently.
Still doubtful on Mulan's OS release strategy, they should delay that in more than China.

Re: COVID-19 and box office
I'm following box office for four decades now and I have never seen an event threatening the global box office like this...
It probably can only be topped by an alien invasion...

Re: COVID-19 and box office
Disney has delayed Mulan in Japan (now May 22nd), so it's odd they just aren't doing it throughout Asia since Japan is one of the lesser affected countries and is about to fall behind a lot of European countries too.
