Did anyone else feel that Scarlett was on the verge of having a fit of hysterical laughter throughout the trailer?

This looks quite interesting. Michael Bay has the knack of coming up with winners though most people dismiss him too easily.

Exactly, and this island just looks to interesting to pass up.

Nothing really impressive about the trailer and sci-fi is sometimes a hard sell. With that said, Michael Bay movies always open big so I dont think this will be any different. I say around 45 million/130 million total. The same amount I Robot got

Looks better than Bay's typical gung-ho, shoot-em-up action flick - it seems to actually have an interesting story - but we'll see. I'm psyched about the cast though - McGregor, Johansson, Hounsou, Buscemi, Bean & Duncan - and it seems to have the same appeal that I, Robot did - aside from Will Smith.

So $45 million opening, and $130 million total.

Wow.
This looks hot.

I hope the ad campaign continues the excellence of the new trailer.
If so:
Opening: $59m
Final: $170m

If not:
Opening: $46m
Final: $124m

I think one of the bigger reasons Minority Report didn't break out as much as it 'could have' was Fox's butchered ad campaign, specifically in the TV spots leading up to its release. Since The Island seems to be more action oriented, I think it'll be an easier sell. And August is looking preeettty weak so far, so there should be enough room for this to stretch its legs.

Ah, yes - Does this have a rating yet? The newest trailer almost makes me think it could be R ala The Rock, but who knows. Could be a factor.

*bump*

Not lookin' so hot for The Island right now. My initial prediction in this thread might be spot on after all.

Opening: $29.7 million
Total: $92 million

Not bad, but not what some people would expect.

55/160

Big breakout. The only action films to tank at the BO this summer were XxX, Kingdom of Heaven, and Mindhunters. Everything else has/will hit $150+. Somehow I think this will follow the trend.

I. for one, never expected it to open higher than Mr. and Mrs. Smith which had bigger stars and more buzz. It looks infinitely better though.

Dreamworks has tried everything, but The Island is still not tracking well....

DreamWork's The Island still isn't tracking -- the hoped-for boost from last Saturday night's nationwide sneak simply didn't happen. Everything has been tried, loads of TV ad money has been spent trying to get it off the runway and it's just not taking. Awareness and interest is also on the low side for Rob Cohen's Stealth (Columbia, 7.29), according to recent data...despite Jamie Foxx (a costar along with Josh Lucas) being front-and-center in the trailer. Opening tracking figures on Warner Bros.' The Dukes of Hazzard showed a 72% general awareness, a 36% definite interest and 5% first-choice...which is pretty good for a movie three weeks away from opening. However, it also got a very high "definitely not interested" rating from urban respondents.

Mary, I cannot somewhat rely on that site to track movies. That was the same site that said House of Wax was tracking very well but it didnt. I do give it some credit for Kingdom of Heaven not tracking well but then again alot of people did have the prediction for the movie below 30 million

Tracking is not always right. Like roid said, House of Wax was tracking for a $20+ million opening weekend, but ended up with a $12 million opening weekend.

I'll admit that The Island isn't looking too good for a $40+ million opening weekend, but $30+ million is still possible.

I agree that tracking isn't always right, especially on kid movies.

PS: Those tracking datas were come from a private industry tracking service called Cinesys, which provides its data to clients through National Research Group (NRG). hollywood-elsewhere.com just get those datas from NRG.

Island and Stealth might be the duds of the summer, but I have a feeling one will pull out ( hehehe ) With budgets over 100m doesnt look good for them if this tracking thing is right.

Speaking of Stealth, doing the RT rating for that movie will be as fun as the one we did for F4. I cant wait for the Dukes of Hazzards RT thread too :candle:

Time to bump.
I stick with my 45/145.
Even I think it will be very hard to pass the 40 opening.
But then. This is the action movie of the summer. And FF4 and Willy "I like touching kids" Wonka will be BAYminated.

I think that when July 22 comes people will decide to check out the Island. Early reviews have been great and I think people are waiting for word on whether this film is good before seeing it. I'm predicting a 45 mil opening and a 150 mil finish.

Michael Bay has been gold at the box office with every movie he has ever made. Although this is his first movie without Bruckheimer, it will still do amazing numbers. I see it opening in the high 40's and if it tops 50 that wouldn't surprise me.

TC estimates suck. 2,800 theaters is not strong enough for a $50 million opening. If the estimates hold true, my new prediction is 38/115
