Weekend Estimates
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindlewald - 62m
Eek.
If it has a multiplier like last year's Justice League (2.4) it'll finish with 151m. I'm gonna go with a 2.65 multiplier, 164m finish.
International opening overall is at 253m. A finish below 700m would probably be alarming for WB. It'll be interesting to see if this actually does get 5 films.

Re: Weekend Estimates
I don’t think they’ll be able to finish the story in a trilogy but they should definitely see if they can finish it in 4. And they should shoot them back to back and release them close to each other. Then they can get to work on a Harry Potter movie people would actually be excited about m.

Re: Weekend Estimates
https://www.boxofficemojo.com/daily/cha ... -18&p=.htmNasty drops all around. Instant Family and Widows' opening are not too bad but not great. Instant Family will probably play well for the holidays, don't see Widows going much more than $35m.

Re: Weekend Estimates
I think in Widows case the disappoint comes down to release date and/or title.
A movie called "Widows" isn't top of mind right before the holidays. Even with great reviews it sounds too heavy for this time of year, especially for a wide release. Maybe would have put it in September of MLK weekend as a wide release.
Another case of audiences going against Rotten Tomatoes' sentiment...

Re: Weekend Estimates
What a terrible weekend outside of The Grinch and Instant Family. Terrible holds all around. Hoping everything rebounds big time next weekend.

Re: Weekend Estimates
Venom stayed at #1 in China and is now at $207m there, WW at $780m right now. shame this is happening for such a pedestrian movie but I am keen to see how a sequel is quality wise.

Re: Weekend Estimates
This was not a good weekend and that includes instant family and green book. I think people are just waiting for Creed 2 and Ralph next week.

Re: Weekend Estimates
Hopefully Instant Family has great legs, as that opening really disappointed me. I thought it'd have bigger appeal, since it's not really a family story that's been covered before in a studio movie.

Re: Weekend Estimates
Considering the other drops Grinch looks set for good holds until January as expected. ASIB still had the second best hold; it should finish right at 200m. Perhaps people were waiting for Thanksgiving to go to theaters.

Re: Weekend Estimates
I don’t know how the front runner is supposed to get 500 theaters next week; the PTA will be awful.

I really don't think Instant Family did that poorly. I didn't see it doing much higher. Should be very leggy this holiday season. I wonder how much of an effect the storms had on the box office. Most movies did unusually poor.

Most movies did unusually poor. I've noticed Christmas shopping has been in full force the last 2 weeks - the kind of crowds I've usually seen after Thanksgiving. Maybe people getting an earlier start fighting over a toaster had an impact.

I think they need to get a screenwriter and just have Rowling come up with the story. The reviews note this as the biggest problem with the film. I haven't seen it yet. Am going to see it this week. Some Harry Potter fans I know seem to like it from what I can tell.

Re: Weekend Estimates
I think Beasts will hold up okay. Between Beasts, Grinch, Ralph, Creed, Robin, Bohemian, and Instant Family, this is going to be a crazy Thanksgiving weekend overall.

Re: Weekend Estimates
Disappointed with FB2. It deserves its destined middling gross.
I hear some call it a franchise killer, which may yet be true.
The HP franchise has lasted this long based on the strength of the stories, but it is absent from this installment. In fact, everything can be cut out and we just move on to the next film. It is supremely irrelevant.
Why call it Fantastic Beasts at all? It feels like if Rowling and WB wanted to make another franchise, they should not have decided to start it off on a protagonist/hook that has little to do with the plot they are aiming to sell.
Rowling also needs to step back, if ego is indeed in the way.
