Re: The Mule predictions
$100m seems like a very aggressive prediction...December is loaded to the gills with movies. Gonna need spectacular reviews to break out, in my mind.

Re: The Mule predictions
Yeah December is fucking packed this year which is going to make it hard for this to breakout, but it looks appealing enough and Cooper coming fresh of the success of ASIB should give it quite a bit of momentum as well.
I voted for the $50-$75M range.

Re: The Mule predictions
December may be crowded but this movie looks very different from all the other movies, that's why THE MULE will stand out...

Re: The Mule predictions
I thought Eastwood was reprising the role in Gran Torino when I saw the trailer. We've seen a lot of stories about a damaged old soul asking for audience's sympathy. I am sure it will do great in box office because it is easy to connect with that emotional pitch. I hope it is not a sentimental film that is short on context but heavy on emotions.

Re: The Mule predictions
I think it will be leggy and should stand out among the other December fair.

Re: The Mule predictions
Sure December is packed full of movies for younger audiences but I think that this could be effective counter programming. How effective is going to really come down to the reviews, but the trailer is solid and it's been long enough since we've seen Clint on screen that I do think it could be a minor event for a certain demographic.

Re: The Mule predictions
And it should run well through January.

Re: The Mule predictions
It's interesting that WB is going with a wide December release, when Eastwood's biggest hits (Gran Torino and American Sniper) didn't go wide until January. But I think this is a smart move - Eastwood can be a draw when he has the right project, and this is an outstanding trailer that really sells the concept better than I could have ever expected (I showed it to my parents and even my mom got interested, and she never likes crime thrillers). If it can open above $20 million, holiday and January legs should easily carry it past $100 million.
ETA: Also having Cooper hot off of A Star is Born can only help

What a strong run for it. $103.8m final domestic total.
