Re: Weekend Estimates
Lupita's box office track record will have some mega hits:
3/22/19 Us $250 m 2/16/18 Black Panther $700,059,566 12/15/17 Star Wars: The Last Jedi $620,181,382 9/23/16 Queen of Katwe $8,874,389 4/15/16 The Jungle Book (2016) $364,001,123 12/18/15 Star Wars: The Force Awakens $936,662,225
Next: 12/20/19 Star Wars: Episode IX
Over a 4 year period, she will likely have 6/7 of her movies do $250 m+, 5/7 $350 m+, 4/7 potentially at $600 m+. Still not bankable on her own but post Us should be interesting what she does.

Re: Weekend Estimates
Superb start for Us. I am very curious about what its legs will look like, but as of right now its already a huge hit. That is a great drop for CM as well. It should easily go over $400M now, and will officially cross $1B WW by sometime next week.

Peele looks like he's going to have a Nolan type career if this keeps up. Directors with star status.

Re: Weekend Estimates
This is a star-making moment for Lupita. It's shocking that after the Oscar and all the media hype this is only her fourth live-action role since winning, but with this she's shown Hollywood that she can headline a film successfully. There should be no more discussions over her accent, whether or not audiences will find her 'relatable', etc.

Re: Weekend Estimates
How much is Maz Kanata in SW movies??? Including SW gigs in Lupita's career is not right. How much marketing of BP was focused on her? She has no star power on her own though I'd say like Ali she is becoming the go to black female these days.

Re: Weekend Estimates
Movies that make this amount of money on star power require huge names that are known the world over. Nobody knows Lupita N'Gongyo or whatever the fuck her name is. As Jack said, she's just the go-to black-black woman at the moment. When they need an African black, they'll choose her. If they need an American black, they'll go for Viola Davis or Regina King.

Re: Weekend Estimates
She and her oscar-winning reputation added some prestige on to Black Panther and Us. Her 50 second cameo in The Last Jedi probably didn’t help too much. Nobody has true starpower anymore, it’s more about casting the right people for the right roles.

Re: Weekend Estimates
I don't think many people saw US or BP because of Lupita or changed their minds to check out these movies because of her and her Oscar win. Even an unknown black heroine in these case would have made no difference to these movies OW or legs (for that matter).

Re: Weekend Estimates
I think having the stars from Black Panther helped to a degree but not much. The reason this did so well is because it pretty much acted as a sequel to Get Out [same reason why Signs opened so big after Sixth Sense, opening adjusts to around 90m ] and the trailer was very effective.

Reminds me of Zoe Saldana who has been in many of the biggest movies of the last 10 years. Making a film both white people and black people are interested in is powerful. The demo net is wider
