Re: Box Office Emergency: Solo $13m-$15m Thursday previews
Solo is like Guardians of the Galaxy 2 but with less humor and less engaging lead.
Being a spinoff without a huge known cameo like Vader makes it feel much more like any given MCU film. The main series is like Avengers and the spinoffs are like the lone character films. Rogue One was sort of a Civil War type deal with the massive cameo putting it in a similar league with the main series. Solo is more like your Guardians 2.

Updated estimate is $14.1m, so likely under $15m.

I don't see why Solo would all of a sudden play like an MCU film. Sure it might be a little back-loaded, but it's still Star Wars and it's going to skew really old regardless. The family appeal might help it's drops over the weekend more than anything else, but it won't be that drastic IMO. Either way this is looking to be a very meh weekend.

Thoroughly enjoyed Solo. $14m Thurs right before Memorial Day weekend isn't bad. I didn't expect mega blockbuster numbers.

These numbers are very early but still doesn't bode well for $40m today. No way to account for walk-ups later in the day and I think Solo will do well enough in that area.

The last three Star Wars movies before this were the three biggest movies of their respective years. Of course it's big. However, domestically, Episode 2 was OBVIOUSLY less popular than Spider-man. Episode 3 was less popular than Spider-man & Pirates, while Batman in 2008 and Transformers in 2009 were clearly ahead of Sith's level as well. Globaly, they were well behind Potter and Rings. It doesn't surprise me that the lower tier films are falling to merely "average" blockbuster levels. I also firmly believe that Episode 9 will not challenge any records without Luke featured heavily. If this is true how come the Force Awakens happened? By far the biggest OW at the time, and biggest film of all time. And Sith was pretty damn huge. The biggest opening event of all time up to that point, the first 50 mil day which brought KJ to its knees Star Wars was bigger than anything up until 2015. For all the criticisms of George Lucas films at least they are completely unique in feel from any other blockbuster and an event. They diluted the brand now, and space sci fi adventures is a way harder sell on its own than superhero films.

If these numbers hold true then it's safe to say that Rian Johnson single handily destroyed Star Wars. The faithful are obviously so disappointed in TLJ that they didn't show up for Solo.

I see Solo doing $35m-$37m for "true" Friday i.e. 45% increase from previews like RO. Both TLJ and TFA had lesser increase so it could still go below $35m mark. So with $14m previews it should have landed somewhere between $36m-$38m OD. $33m is VERY low total disaster. It could see a slight increase over OD but I don't think it's getting to $40m today.

Nope. There are several factors to Solo. First of the late marketing push, CASTING, well know production troubles and directors leaving, release being so close to another SW movie(SW doesn't have a proven track record of success with close releases), release date being VERY close to two major Marvel blockbusters(the next best thing these days and also satisfying action crowd/families).

But to get nostalgia you still need millennials to generate record breaking numbers and all time huge hits.

To be fair, Pirates 2 was an extremely huge film and one of the biggest ever at the time. It was kind of the first taste of the uber blockbuster sequels that would become common in the 2010s. That opening caught everyone by surprise.
Clones, Sith were definitely big film events, I remember it well. 2005 box office was in a terrible slump and it towered over every other film released that year in North America. And it was #2 internationally only behind Goblet of Fire, which was kind of a reset button for the Potter films making them more adult.

They don't ALWAYS have to be #1 of the year. You have to look at how big they were still in retrospect. So let's assume BP today it will most likely outgross IW, does that mean millennials don't care about IW?

ddd it did on BOM, as far as I remember. Maybe it was because there were tons of Superman Returns fans there and they were constantly bashing Pirates and saying it would flop.
