Meanwhile Thanos looks like he’s going to go swimming, Scrooge McDuck style.

Awful for Solo and those OS numbers are just embarrassing. Really crappy drop for DP2 aswell, but it's already a pretty big hit for Fox with the help of OS. They might want to change some things around for future films in the franchise though.

Luckily the box office will be saved next weekend by: Action Point, Adrift and Upgrade? :funny:

This will be the first May in four years not to see a film not do at least $300 m.

There's Ocean's 8, Incredibles 2 and Jurassic World left really for bigger films in June.

Ant Man, Mamma Mia, and Mission Impossible in July.

And August is well August.

The summer is probably a write off at this point. Though I now expect big overperformances from Ocean and Mamma Mia. I think it would be epic if Ocean ends up beating Solo which though unlikely is not impossible given the buzz.

It is a shame because it is, in my opinion, a great movie. :(

Well on the bright side this weekend pretty much confirms that black panther will stay number one for the year. #wakandaforever

That Deadpool drop is awful

Simply awful for Solo and damn that DP2 drop, one of these two should have moved. Not awful but IW could have held better.

So Solo won't even cross $200m WW opening even on MD weekend. Horrible. OS numbers might turn out to be even worse than domestic.

Fucking fantastic!

There was Justice League's hilarious run, but produced by WB and hated on like mad beforehand makes it less schadenfreude than this lovely piece of work.

I absolutely love this opening weekend. :funny: :funny: :funny:

Summer really is awfully scheduled.

I am not convinced by Ocean's 8 nor MI6 or 7 as they look kinda tired. Well-made, but tired.

Besides Dwayne Johnson hyping up his original movie, it's a wasteland for tired franchises. Hopefully they learn something from this summer. I mean, if not taking more chances, at least not leaving DP2/Solo type movies basically opening by themselves.

BK is surely overjoyed by this. Its been one of those rare days of victory for him against Disney.

Solo's disappointment is a win for the box office over the long run. Studios will be much more strategic about their release schedule and franchise saturation.

A moment like this had to happen at Disney for the next films to succeed. Pixar had their "moment" with Cars 2 and consciously spent much more time on their other sequels to learn from it. I expect this is a WIN over the long run for the SW franchise fans.

Except we have been talking about ridiculous scheduling for past three years++ and the stupidity keeps on increasing

Disney has had plenty of bad Memorial Day weekends in the past, so while I'm not expecting bad scheduling to stop all of a sudden I do hope they change the release strategies for these Star Wars movies. These spin offs just need to stop for a while, especially when the main franchise is still going strong at the same time.

all the trades say the movie cost 300m BEFORE marketing. This isn't just a money loser, this is a massive box office bomb on an epic scale

Did you just read that? Its Production budget was declared last week to be $300m and with the reshoots that's kinda expected.

Um...but their movies haven't got any better unfortunately.

Monsters Uni - meh
Dory - mehher meh
CARS 3! - I actually liked this one, the proper sequel to Cars.
Incredibles 2 - looks so meh, but fingers crossed

and then what else do they have in store? Toy Story 4...

They really should've stuck with a December release for Solo. Had Deadpool 2 in August. Both would have done better...

I haven’t felt this bad for a Star Wars movie box office performance since AOTC.

Also after this long weekend looks like IW lead on BP domestic will be under 20m. Will IW end up catching the King?

In positive news:

Book Club is probably the highlight of the top 5. Might pull a 5+ multiplier at this rate which is fantastic from a $13 m weekend.

RBG looks like it could make the top 10 docs of all time at this rate.

Clones opened huge and adjusts to $480m and gave us an iconic moment with the Yoda fight
