Looks like WOLF WARRIORS 2 will deliver a second weekend north of $160m in China (at least $466m in 11 days) - domestic 2nd weekend record is held by SW7 with $149m...

HA! Day 10 just shy of $60m. Sorry, but this is just insane. Too high to be believed. Must be some fixing here by the government. Well, nothing we can do about it, and it will certainly be the highest-grossing film ever in China, beating The Mermaid's $530m.

I'm still seeing near pretty much sell outs tonight at my local cinema with hardly any less screens than last weekend too. It might sound crazy, but I actually think tthey're selling that many tickets. Just there's a high likelihood these tickets are purchased at a online discounted rates usd 5-10, while I wonder if those numbers which they report use those actual purchase prices, or the non-discounted rates which are usd 10-14.

Somebody put an article in the other thread where the Chinese government punished the company behind Ip Man 3 for faking non-existent sold-out shows. So maybe they're making them up again?

In another update, it's all set to cross $400 M today and by another week, it'll officially surpass Beauty and the beast to become the highest grossing domestic hit :#

That is indeed insane but as others have said I just can't believe these numbers are true.

Have you read the article?

Quote:
Several of China's top mobile ticketing apps — which is how over 70 percent of Chinese movie tickets are now bought — showed sold-out Ip Man 3 screenings running every 10 minutes until 3 a.m. at some cinemas, an impossibly frequent schedule.

The Chinese State Administration of Press, Publications, Radio, Film and Television soon launched an investigation, discovering that more than 7,600 of the screenings were fabricated. In addition to slapping Max Screen with the one-month ban, the bureau issued formal warnings to three mobile ticketing services involved in the scam, as well as to 73 cinemas. In a push to prevent repeat offenses, the China Association of Film Distributors and Cinemas named and shamed the offending companies on its website.

You don't know where that ticket site gets their numbers from.

Oh come on guys, for years we're predicting that one day China results would be bigger than domestic and now almost everyone pretends the numbers are made up...

And by the way:

I don't think most of are saying its doing bad but these numbers are way too suspicious specially in the way they are reported. I think its doing 75% of its gross but that additional 25% that keeps increasing everyday might not be all true.

Algren gets his numbers from entgroup and for years every movie's numbers go up as more results from theaters trickle in. This is nothing special and happens every day for every movie. It just looks much much bigger for WW2 because the base is so big... Going up 5 % when a movie is doing $0.5m is not a big deal, but going up 5 % when a movie does $50m is certainly an eye catcher...

It's true. They're always reported like this. And I am not saying that the government are fiddling with the numbers purely based on that. I do not see the hype that these numbers suggest. Apart from my wife and me, nobody else I know has seen it. Nobody at my workplace, nobody at stuffp's workplace, nobody is even talking about it (we all know that online numbers can be artificially created if needed). New films are coming out and this one apparently is still doing gangbusters ... I just do not buy it. Strikes me more as an opportunistic way for China to have a Chinese #1. It's probably doing very well. I expect it is making 70% of its reported gross. The rest of probably topped up by government propagandists. If this was going to happen in any country, it would be China. I'm sorry, but it's just too good to be true -- a Chinese-made, Chinese-produced, Chinese-loved, Chinese nationalist movie becoming #1 movie ever in China -- so I am suspicious.

Maybe it's because I'm opening myself up a bit more for it, but I feel I do see some more advertisements of WW2 then I've seen of some other films. I think they're trying harder to still plug it ahead now too as well I think more people who didn't see the film yet got more interested because it's doing so well.

But, I agree I don't feel any hype that suggest this is a $500m film, then again I didn't see that with the Mermaid much either.

In some way I feel a domestic $500m film gross in China might not even be that much even.

With the right film, perhaps an Avatar 2, $800m shouldn't be hard.

It is being advertised much less than usual blockbusters. I've see two bus billboards. And the first Wolf Warriors did not even manage $90m, so two bus billboards are about right. So why would this one suddenly make $500m?

I think as we've experienced before, there doesn't seem to be any denominators that are related to any precedent with Chinese Box Office.

I think it might gross $1B with ease, then there'll be WW3, WW4, WW5 with plastic tanks and some unknown white faces, thus making it the most successful franchise of all time, Chinese planned it all out. ;P
Also, isn't it funny that a chinese film which is grossing well over $200M to $300M on average doesn't even cross $1M in states, while japanese and indians small budget films are crossing that mark on regular intervals :3

Australia is also up by 321 % in its second weekend and enters the Top Ten at No. 7...

I changed this thread to the "official" INTL thread...

There are many, many, many Chinese in Australia, so it's not surprising. Some areas of Sydney are as if you've been dropped into China.

OMFG, I was right, damn right, at this rate it'll become the only film in the history to cross $1 B in a single market, even Avatar couldn't do that, CHINA NO 1 :shades:

So it made just $14m yesterday in China? That's quite a drop from last week, and its first day below $20m.
