True, but I'd say the hype/buzz for BP is much higher than any of those movies as of right now. Granted that doesn't always translate to HUGE box-office numbers, but the potential is definitely there, especially with the goodwill Marvel has built up with their almost perfect track record, and what's likely to be strong reviews.

I'll have to put it down to not being in the US then, because I don't see the hype.

Awesome news, but people who think this means it actually has a chance at beating Civil War's opening weekend need to slow down a bit, because that is not what's actually being reported. We need to remember that CW was two years ago and Marvel films have only gotten more pre-sales heavy over the years. I even remember multiple outlets reporting that at that time CW was selling better than Ultron which combined with those great reviews is what lead to a lot of us predicting $200M+ OW. I don't want to make that mistake again, however I do believe that unlike CW or Ultron Black Panther could potentially have solid walk-ups from the non Marvel fans. Like I said before this is going to be HUGE with the GA/casual fans.

If this is going to be people's standard of quality, it's pretty fucking low and pretty damning of the times we live in.

Wonder Woman, another lauded film, was especially awful. Same old dreck we've seen before except a woman's in it.

I've long suspected that reviews are good for superhero movies because of an American bias and it's true. Maybe it's Disney's pressure- as is now coming to light their dubious journalistic practices, but whatever it is, bad for the future unless people stop being such automatons and demand a higher standard.

I just bought my advance ticket for 2D IMAX. I'm not a superhero fanboy by any stretch of the imagination, but the sci-fi/fantasy vibe in the trailer reminded me of Thor. Also, these peripheral characters in their origin stories (qv Ant-Man) are usually better than the mainline Marvel products.

I think it will grasp this club, but finally not make it.

I know this hype is based off the extreme opening of Thor Ragnarok but this is still a "origin story". It still is based on a fairly new character to the universe. It still is a black marvel superhero and there's no extra marvel hero to help draw in the general folks. Yes the hype is here but I just can't see this out opening Thor 3. Don't get me wrong, I'm gonna get my ticket and see this but I'm still out.

The hype for this movie is already bigger than the original Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man, in Doctor Strange. I have a feeling that black panther being a big part of civil war is was increasing height as well. I think it was smart to introduce his character in Civil War and then do a standalone film.
