I'm rooting for La La Land and can't wait to see it, but I am not joining the $150m flash club. The only musical to top $150m this century was Chicago, and it had the decades of name recognition from the stage show.

Dreamgirls adjusts to $131 million and it does so without having even been nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.

If you're talking adjusted numbers, Chicago did $243m - and there's several other examples of post-2000 musicals that adjust nicely:

Les Miserables - $160m
Mamma Mia! - $172m
Enchanted - $158m
Hairspray - $148m

But I'm still not feeling $150m - though I hope La La Land proves me wrong.

Saw this at a 7:30 preview screening tonight in a southwest suburb of Chicago, and it was sold out, and the next showing was already half-full almost an hour before it started. So it's doing very very well already. $30k+ PTA is already looking good for the weekend.

Was surprised that some of my relatives went out and saw this last night. I wonder how high it'll go.

We won't know much until February anyway. It's not like it will start making serious money until it wins some awards and forces people to see it.

So this should make it out of next weekend with probably at least 30M or so and only playing in 700 theaters (barring any expansion this weekend).

I was thinking that MLK weekend would be great for it to expand and take advantage of Oscar noms, but just saw that they aren't announced until 1/24 this year, about a week after they usually are. It could probably still go wide MLK weekend and then have a great hold the next weekend.

It will continue to expand on January 6 according to Deadline but I like this statement.

I guess if it goes wide on the 6th, it has the following weekend to benefit from MLK weekend for a great hold and then yet another the next weekend with lots of Oscar nominations. I also see that the Golden Globes are on 1/8, and while I don't think those have much affect on BO, the fact that LLL is in the Musical/Comedy category, it has more opportunity for wins and more publicity.

This will be getting an IMAX release starting next weekend.

I may have to go back for time #3.

So is this on course for 150? It does seem like 100 is in the cards.

I hope this at least beats Chicago. Brilliant brilliant film - deserves a major break out.

I'm just relieved I liked this film. It would be exhausting to lament another film making too much money after Sing.

Though really anything could happen for this film and it's not guaranteed much more than 100m at this point.

So $100m is happening. So pleased for it.
