KJ's Fall/Winter 2016 Box Office Contest

This fall/winter is not letting up on interesting movies to predict. Can Rogue One achieve a massive $500+ million gross? Will Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them replicate any of Harry Potter's success? Plus there are so many smaller movies that are sure to have wide prediction ranges.

The season's contest covers movies released from Septembr 9th, 2016 to December 30th, 2016. The player with the most points at the end of the game will receive a $25 gift card.

How the Points Work
Spoiler: show
Each player predicts the total domestic box office grosses of 30 movies listed further below. It's the ultimate test in box office predictions: guessing a movie's potential final gross before the season even starts with few, if any, tracking numbers. For each movie, the top 25% of players who predicted most accurately will get 3 points a piece.

Players can also score bonus points. The first is the Top 5. Each players will predict the fall/winter season's five biggest films. Each rank correctly predicted with score 1 point. An extra bonus of 15 points is given to any player who correctly predicts the Fall/Winter 2016 Top 5 in the correct order. (This has still never been done in the 4+ year history of this game.) It should be noted only the 30 movies that are being predicted are contenders for our Top 5 point system.

Finally, players predict the answers to ten box office questions. A correct answer scores 2 points.

Ties are broken by who has the lowest total difference between each of their movie predictions and the actual total. Backup movies are in place in case any of the 30 predicted movies change their release date. (Once a movie moves its release date outside our season window, the first backup movie listed comes into play.) Box office questions will only be voided if the movie with the release date change is specifically mentioned in the question, so be careful when crafting your answers.

Ready?

Predict Madea and Patriots Day with care because I could also see Keeping Up with the Joneses moving to next year.

In summary, I expect that Rogue One will do less than Finding Dory because no franchise has ever led the domestic box office two years in a row, and I think that pattern has to continue.

Moana is going to kill it; it probably won't match my insane prediction, but YOLO.

Fantastic Beasts will do okay, but it won't be too impressive. The fan base will get it over 200 million, it will have to be really good to get much higher.

Sing looks really unappealing to me; it's the Muppets formula with animated animals instead of puppets, it really has nothing going for it other than Illumination's hot streak and manipulative use of pop songs in its trailer.

Trolls is going to be a big hit with kids, even if adults don't like it. I think it will open to 50 million. While Doctor Strange will probably out open it, it should take number 1 in its second weekend. Doctor Strange will get a debut over 50 million, but then fall fast like Thor 2 and see a sub 150m gross.

The Magnificent Seven could be Denzel's biggest opening with more than American Gangster. I think Arrival can be a big hit for Villanueve, way bigger than his other films in a way similar to how The Revenant blew every other Innaritu film out of the water. Assassin's Creed I think will do well, as will Inferno. The Girl on the Train does not have as good of a twist as Gone Girl, but the characters and setting are even more involving, IMO, so it could do 100m, but I see it just missing. Miss Peregrine looks good, I think it can get a 25m debut and leg its way o 90mish. Storks will do 100m because it looks okay, but it will probably do Peabody and Sherman numbers or less.

There are a lot of high profile releases from name directors (Hacksaw Ridge, Deepwater Horizon, Billy Lynn, Snowden) that I think will have to rely on awards buzz to be big.

Bad Santa, Bridget Jones and Jack Reacher should all see dips from their predecessors (Reacher's should be more considerable without as much inflation to help it). I think very few people asked for any of these.
