I mean ceiling is probably something like 50m/250m, but that's assuming everything goes right.

Pragmatically, a non-US focused WW2 film doing 40m/160m would be great, particularly since it should do very well overseas.

But...it's mother fucking Nolan.

BOT insiders say that it's well ahead of Pirates 5 and just below Dr. Strange presales 10 days out for their mid sized theater chain. It's also like 10x poor Apes in general.

I'm in. Its a new take on a familar story, is not a franchise picture, has infinite nerd cred to go along with the war movie crowds, has Nolan, has good reviews and its only competition for the rest of the summer is The Dark Tower. $60m / $250m seems very obtainable in this market.

I'm going to stick to SPR adjusted $55-$60m. There is tangible buzz for it and while this will indeed appeal to a younger than usual demo, it will also appeal to older demos who have not been well served this summer.

Great early reviews/word + IMAX event status and higher ticket prices + brisk running time = BO smash.

The Dunkirk story is familiar to the American public? I don't think so...not in 2017. Most of the people who would know about it are dead or too old to visit a movie theater.

Hell, the media asked some of the young British cast members of this film how much they knew about the history at Dunkirk and it sounds like even in Britain it's sort of an afterthought these days.

If it does well at the box office, it will be almost entirely because Nolan pulled off another movie with off the charts WOM.

World War2 was the familar story I was talking about.

Agreed. The Battle of Dunkirk is not part of any mandatory history syllabus in the UK. It may have been added since I left school, but I doubt it, and that still means it will not be known by anyone that is 30+. That being said, the name "Dunkirk" is familiar to people. We know it has relevance to the Second World War. But I would doubt any Joe Popcorn types would know the story or care that it is being told. If this does well, it's because it's a summer actioner and because of Nolan.

I saw the (latest?) trailer in front of Wonder Woman last night. I haven't been watching the trailers since the teaser one which I liked a lot, but I thought the movie looked very very boring based on it.

Also to weigh in on the "Dunkirk is a famous battle" chat - for what it's worth this is not the first time I ever heard of Dunkirk. We do have a lot of crap we had to learn in our history books and basically one whole year is devoted to WW1 and WW2, but Dunkirk was an afterthought summarized in less than half page if my memory serves me correct so I would say that it's not being treated as some kind of a pivotal moment in the history of WW2 let alone the bigger picture.

I know it has Flow Styles, but Dunkirk will top 300k tweets 8 days from release.

Pre-sales are not good in my rural area, but they are a lot better than Valerian (literally no tickets sold for RPX on the 20th). But I looked at Dunkirk's sales in bigger markets and it seems to be doing pretty good for a non-franchise movie. Valerian looks dead even in the big markets.
