KJ's 2014 Summer Box Office Contest

Summer time! It's one of the most unpredictable ones I can ever remember, too. No clear dominant presence for the #1 pole position. That's really what's going to make this season's contest more fun that ever!

Plus, what other box office game can take you as little as 15 minutes to play, but provide enjoyment for the entire season? :)

The season's contest covers movies released from May 2nd, 2014 to August 29th, 2014. The player with the most points at the end of the game will receive a $25 gift card.

How the Points Work
Each player predicts the total domestic box office grosses of 30 movies listed further below. It's the ultimate test in box office predictions: guessing a movie's potential final gross before the season even starts with few, if any, tracking numbers. For each movie, the top 25% of players who predicted most accurately will get 3 points a piece.

Players can also score bonus points. The first is the Summer Top 5. Each players will predict the summer season's five biggest films. Each rank correctly predicted with score 1 point. An extra bonus of 15 points is given to any player who correctly predicts the Summer 2014 Top 5 in the correct order. (This has still never been done in the history of this game.)

Finally, players predict the answers to ten various box office questions. A correct answer scores 2 points.

Ties are broken by the the sum of all of the total grosses for every movie minus the sum of your total gross predictions. Backup movies are in place in case any of the 30 predicted movies change their release date. Box office questions will only be voided if the movie with the release date change is specifically mentioned in the question, so be careful when crafting your answers.

Ready?
Fill out the form below and paste in this thread / PM it to me by May 1st, 2014 at 11:59 PM CST. Good luck!

Post Re: KJ's 2014 Summer Box Office Contest - It's here!
Was wondering if I could make any suggestions or if these are final?

#1: Which sequel will have the biggest percentage increase from its previous movie - The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, The Expendables 3, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Planes: Fire and Rescue, Think Like a Man Too, or Transformers: Age of Extinction? add XMDOFP, 22JS and either Purge/Sin City. If we were to replace, the former seems a more likely candidate to increase than TE3/AoE(or Planes)

#2: Which wildcard will gross the most in total - Get On Up, The Giver, Into the Storm, Jersey Boys, or Lucy? add Purge and Million Dollar Arm

#5: Which will gross more in total - Guardians of the Galaxy or the sum of Mom's Night Out and The Fault in Our Stars? Mom's Night Out looks like a dump so I think something else, maybe 100 Ft Journey (Mirren) or Step Up might be better? Or maybe it can be left since it seems Fault could potentially outgross Guardians by itself

#8: Will Transformers: Age of Extinction's total gross triple the total gross of Blended? Maybe compare 3xBlended vs Maleficient or switching #5 and #8, AoE gross 1.5-2x more than GotG and FioS VS Maleficient or Godzilla vs Guardians or Maleficient vs Godzilla or Maleficient/Fault vs Godzilla/Guardians I think this question is too straightforward.

#6: Which comedy will gross more in total - A Million Ways to Die in the West, Neighbors, Sex Tape, Tammy, or 22 Jump Street?add Blended, Think Like A Man Too
#7: Which action movie will gross more in total - Edge of Tomorrow, Jupiter Ascending, or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? add Hercules and The Expendables 3

#3: What film that was #1 on its opening weekend will have the smallest second weekend drop?
#4: What will be the 3rd highest grossing film released in May?
#9: How many films will gross over $100 million in total?
#10: What will be the highest grossing film not predicted in the total gross section (including the backup films)?

I didn't include the first two since they might be too obvious of picks (plus X-Men would be confusing on which movie is its previous). I didn't include Sin City because I think there's a good chance of a delay, so I didn't want to void the question.

BK wrote:

Those don't seem like much of wildcards. They both seem pretty set for a similar gross about $30-50 million.

Yep, exactly on Mom's Night Out! :) Its gross may end up being irrelevant if some think Fault in Our Start can outgross Guardians by itself.

BK wrote:

Blended can make anywhere from $70-130 million, so I think that's a fair comparison to Transformers when tripling its gross.

BK wrote:
#6: Which comedy will gross more in total - A Million Ways to Die in the West, Neighbors, Sex Tape, Tammy, or 22 Jump Street?add Blended, Think Like A Man Too

I'm fine with this - I'll add that in.

I like this too.

Thanks for considering MGKC!

I see what you mean. I was thinking XMFC would be the prequel. But, I'm fine with what you've chosen.

I thought Blended would be a real stinker e.g. below $50m but I guess I'm a lone wolf in that so OK, I know which option I'll be choosing!

I haven't looked at past contests to see if it's unusual or not, but so far no one's top 5 matches up. In fact, no one's top 3 does.

Maybe someone will finally get the order right. ;)

Definitely will have more variety this time, but even more unpredictability.

Possible movies for top 5:
Godzilla, Maleficent, How to Train Your Dragon 2, X-Men, Spider-Man 2, Transformers, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

With no guaranteed #1 for the summer, that's a total of 2,520 possible configurations. :noway:

Question number 10 is very hard this time, particularly with films such as Deliver Us from Evil, The Giver, and Lucy in the main mix and therefore ineligible. The ones left over are very firmly second- or even third-tier.

I still can't get over how unclear the #1 of the summer is. It's a straight tie in my mind between Dragons 2, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Godzilla, and X-Men: Days of Future Past.

7 days left to submit your predictions, though!

It won't be Apes. ;) Transformers 4 has a much stronger chance.

Oh just wait. :mer: I think it's being underpredicted once again. The first was very well-received.
