zwackerm wrote: Hercules and The Hunchback of Notre Dame adjust to like 180 each. That would hardly be considered horrible nowadays, no? Only disappointing in light of the fact that they came on the heels of this foursome: Beauty & The Beast - $301m Aladdin - $452m The Lion King - $643m Pocahontas - $280m (^Original release amounts adjusted ofc.) Hunchback's foreign gross was also comparatively strong (esp. in France).

Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
I can't believe Pocahontas adjusts to that much. It seems like the passionate hate there once was toward it has died out and only a few real fans of it. It really just seems forgotten. Even Hunchback is remembered for how adult it was and Hercules is remembered as a sort of nail in the coffin for the Renaissance, even if Mulan and Tarzan managed to approach Pocahontas levels.

I don't think there was "Passionate hate" just a general understanding of it being an major step down in quality. Still solid though.

On that note, I was watching Jerry Maguire while flying yesterday, and it occurred to me that it adjusts to nearly $300 million now (BOM puts it at 292). I just can't imagine a star-driven R-rated dramedy making half that number now. Tom Cruise was a beast. Took R rated movies like A Few Good Men and The Firm to 293m and 329m adjusted respectively. Both those movies though could easily be PG 13 without the F bombs

The Firm also got a lift from the fact that the Grisham book was a huge bestseller. Cruise's presence definitely boosted the film's gross, but it's worth remembering that there were other Grisham adaptations that made bank in the mid-'90s as well (The Pelican Brief, The Client, A Time to Kill).

This time next year, it will be Titanic's 20th year anniversary. Talk about an adjusted gross...

Good Will Hunting adjusts to $254 million. Impossible to imagine a quiet R-rated drama making this much nowadays.

Good Will Hunting's unadjusted gross would be flat-out amazing for a quiet R-rated drama these days.

not adjusted but I always assumed the 2008 movies like Jumper and The Day the Earth Stood Still remake were flops but they actually made decent money. Jumper made 222m on an 85m budget and TDTESS made 233m worldwide on an 80m budget

Good Will Hunting and As Good as it Gets ran shotgun alongside Titanic for the first couple of months of its run. Sadly these types of films rarely break out to this extent these days.

Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
I just took a look at the adjusted list and its uber impressive that Jurassic World retained 86% of Jurassic Park's adjusted tally. JW could have easily gone as a $250 m grosser, let alone what already now adjusts to $680 m! Also, I still am shocked today just how huge Ghost and Home Alone were. $443 m today and a top 10 of all time smash. Then there's Home Alone which reached #3 on the all time list behind only ET and SW ($583 m today). Can you imagine a comedy starring a relatively unknown getting to #3 of all time domestically today? It would have to do $650 m +. I can't possibly see how a similar scenario could happen today.

What's Up, Doc? (written by Buck Henry & Robert Benton (!) and directed by Peter Bogdanovich) was a massive hit for Barbra Streisand and Ryan ONeal at $334m adjusted - and rightly so - it's a screwball comedy classic!

Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
I don't understand how A Beautiful Mind adjusts to $250 million, even with its Oscar wins. What makes it so different from, say, The Imitation Game? Even if The Imitation Game had been the frontrunner the entire season and had won Best Picture, it still would not have topped $150 million, let alone $200 million or $250 million.
Was Russell Crowe THAT hot of a ticket after Gladiator?
Also, Spy Kids adjusts to almost $170 million. WTF?

Magnus wrote: A Beautiful Mind just simply had amazing WOM, much stronger than a film like Imitation Game. Every adult I knew saw it in theaters. It was a very accessible BP winner. American Beauty, released two years earlier, adjusts to 212m and I'd argue A Beautiful mind is more accessible even if AB is a clearly better film.
Spy Kids was released before CGI boom where live action kids film were far more capable of doing strong numbers. Not surprised by its adjustment at all. I'm actually more impressed that the third one adjusts to 157m given franchise fatigue and CGI films becoming the more preferred family entertainment option by then (though it did have the early 3D element to it that probably gave it higher ticket prices). And 3D was a novelty.

Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
ABM just caught on because people loved it and it had a hot star when stars still mattered. Add in the awards love and it's certainly no surprise. Plus there was no backlash at the time. I remember seeing at a drive-in and liking it.

In my high school, they used ABM in the mental disorders unit of my health class. Everyone loved it even 13 years later. Very exciting crowd pleaser:

I went in expecting to like it a lot (despite pulling heavily for FOTR in that year's Oscar race) but ultimately just found ABM to be surprisingly dull. Ron Howard sucks.

Castaway made 233 million unadjusted. Yes. It was more a a pop culture phenom, and had a bigger star, but there was still a market for high concept dramas. Something happened between then and 2005, when the market for that kind of film kind of fell out.

Yeah, this one has always been remarkable to me. $362m Adjusted Even though it surprised (with how much it made) back then, it did star Hanks (who was the still the biggest star in the world at the time), it was the must see film for Christmas and 2000 was the last great year before the dawn of the uber franchises. The following few years were dominated by franchises such as LOTR, Potter, Marvel (Spidey + X Men), Shrek, SW prequels, etc
