If you notice the sequels this year have done really poorly (well quite a bit might be due to the quality of the films)
but caculating current grosses to the originals here: (one is a poorly made "spinoff" to a film from almost 11 years ago)

Miss Congienlitys gross: $106,807,667
MC2 current: $32,192,054
% of originals gross: 31.2%

Ring gross: $129,128,133
Ring 2 current: $68,734,992
% of originals gross: 53.2%

Get Shortys gross: $72,101,622
Be Cools current: $54,661,074
% of originals gross: 75% (the closest to the original movies gross out of any of these)

The Mask gross: $119,938,730
Son of the Mask current: $16,817,227
(i should note the mask made 23 million on its opening weekend!)
% of originals gross: 14%

the year of sequel had already past. maybe it's more suitable to call this year as the year of horror and comic-book adaptation.

It's just the beginning, son. But I have always wondered why many sequels do much worse than the original? I understand sequels can be worser but why don't sequels like Spider-Man 2 or The Empire Strikes Back gross more than the original?

Because the first is always considered a "phonemenon" or a "break-through" film. The sequels are always just, follow-ups to the phonemenon, or follow-ups to the break through film. Occasionally, a sequel will come out of no where and shock us all and BE better, and GROSS more ( The Two Towers, Shrek 2, Meet the Fockers).

I feel this is the year of Sci Fi/Comic Book/Light hearted Comedy. When you think about it, those 3 genres alone basically sum up the whole year.

Well, let's be fair -- all of the aforementioned sequels are pretty heavily deemed inferior to their predecessors. Remember, I walked out of a Ring Two screening and, despite the fact I loved it, immediately said most people would hate it because of how different it was. Son of the Mask and (from reviews) Miss Congeniality 2 are terrible, and Be Cool was a bit disappointing (and few people knew of its connection to Get Shorty).

Don't forget Elektra, only 20% of what Daredevil did (spinoff, btu still). Beauty Shop will also make half of what Barbershop 2 did, and even worse compared to the first. But still, what sequels had done so great by now in 2004?
Sequels released by now in 2004:
Barbershop 2 - Slightly less then the original, just as good quality
Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights - Mind-blowingly less then the original, worse (the original sucked too...)
Agent Cody Banks 2 - Half of the first movies box office, slightly worse
Scooby Doo 2 - 75 million less then the first (almost half), on par quality
The Whole Ten Yards - Total = The first movies opening weekend, much worse movie

There was Barbershop 2, which was considered about on par if not better then the first movie, and despite opening slightly higher couldn't match the legs, making about 65 million vs. 75?. There was Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, which made 14 million vs. the original's 63 million... over 20 years ago. Today, that'd be a HUGE difference, bigger then anything this year. Like 10% of the original. Agent Cody Bank 2 came out on the same weekend with just as much marketing but despite reviews that were almost as good couldn't make half as much as the first outing. Scooby Doo 2 fared similarly, with many saying it was actually somewhat better then the first, it still made 84 million vs. 153 million with a bigger budget then the first. Finally, there's The Whole Ten Yards, which was not only critically reviled compared to the likable first movie, but also made 16 million vs. the original's 53 million... the opening weekend of Whole Nine Yards is actually adjusted for inflation equal to the second movie's TOTAL.

Honestly guys, sequels rarely ever do well in the first few months of the year, it's just the way these things work. Even Kill Bill Vol. 2, despite better reviews then the first and a bigger opening, did noticably worse. In 2004 the first sequel to outgross the original wasn't released until mid-to-late May. So be patient guys and don't count your chickens before they hatch.

i agree with your statement, are-why-a-en. Shrek 2 was a really good example.

Ooooh not too bad. RING TWO will end up with around 60% of the total gross of the Original.

RING TWO was a good movie IMO, and it's doing well over seas so far.

It's already passed $100M worldwide....and i think it will pass the GRUDGE in worldwide gross.

Other than The Ring Two, look at what they made sequels for. Then, tell me you expected them to do better...

Gimli's right! What about SW Ep.3? Haven't you forgot that maybe it'll do LESS than Ep.1, but not as WORSE as what Elektra did (although it's a spinoff from Daredevil)?
