The first Oceans got an 80%. O12 looks like its heading to rotten and remain that way. Also Ebert and Roeper gave it a very marginal thumbs up so they seemed to like to barely recommend it

I know it's a bit early to tell, but looks like Spanglish's oscar chances are fading away...

People actually thought it had a chance?

Come on, it stars Adam Sandler. I'm not saying anything, but...come on! :)

There are some actors the Academy likes (*cough*Hanks*cough*) and some it doesn't (*cough*Cruise*cough*). Sandler they don't care for.

Oh, plenty of people thought it has a chance. You should pass by the Oscar Foreum more often ;) In particular after it made to the TOP 10 list of the National Board of Review people thought it had a great chance.

It's directed by James Brooks (As Good as It Gets), who is loved by academy. That's where the buzz comes from. Also people thought Sandler was pretty good in Punch Drunk Love, and although that was ignored by academy, a collaberation with Brooks gave people thought about the possibility. James Brooks also has an ability to get his actors nominated, so although Spanglish's best picture chance is dead, Paz Vega and Téa Leoni still have a chance IMO.

It didn't make the top 10 list of NBR. That's where the buzz started to die.

*note to myself: "Don't stay up until 4:30 AM trying to study economy and compile box-office charts at the same time. It messes up your mind"*

Thanks, Michael ;)

Also Chloric Leachman should not be forgotten for Spanglish, she's even more likely than Téa Leoni, in my opinion.

Million Dollar Baby - 100%
Fresh: 10 Rotten: 0
Average Rating: 8.2/10

"Slow-burning drama of a determined female boxer and her hard-shelled trainer, a tale Eastwood invests with rewarding reserves of intimacy, tragedy, tenderness and bitter life knowledge."
-- Todd McCarthy, Variety

B "Credible as both a boxing tale and a story about an unusual symbiosis."
-- Harvey S. Karten, COMPUSERVE

3.5/4 "Absolutely riveting entertainment. Takes a formulaic blueprint, tramples it to the floor, and comes up with something altogether more penetrating, touching, and real."
-- Dustin Putman, THEMOVIEBOY.COM

3.5/5 "Hilary Swank knocks us out."
-- Jules Brenner (FC), VARIAGATE.COM

5/5 "An emotionally powerful drama about a woman boxer, a crusty old trainer, and their journey of the heart-one of the year's best"
-- Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat, SPIRITUALITY AND HEALTH

3.5/4 "Another act of faith from Clint Eastwood, Million Dollar Baby may be the best American film of 2004."
-- Ed Gonzalez, SLANT MAGAZINE

A- "The first reel of Million Dollar Baby is formulaic, the second a good boxing melodrama, and the third an intimate drama that matches Ingmar Bergman’s best work. "
-- Emanuel Levy, EMANUELLEVY.COM

Cream of the Crop
"Under Eastwood's painstakingly stripped-down direction -- his filmmaking has become the cinematic equivalent of Hemingway's spare though precise prose -- the story emerges as that rarest of birds, an uplifting tragedy."
-- Kirk Honeycutt, HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

"Deeply involving."
-- Richard Roeper, EBERT & ROEPER

3.5/4 "The knockout punch comes from Eastwood. His stripped-down performance -- as powerful as anything he's ever done -- has a rugged, haunting beauty."
-- Peter Travers, ROLLING STONE

That was somehow expected considering the recent buzz and the developments. What surprises me is that it still made BFCA's TOP 10 of the year and edged out Closer...

Ouch....

Elektra: 13 Reviews, 13 ROTTEN, 0 fresh.

Now has an official RT rating: 0%. I hope it can pull itself up passed 20%.

"Hopelessly Blunted"- Slant Magazine.

"The movie is more like a series of fight scenes and chases occasionally interrupted by sullen glances."- Waffle Movies

This ones funny:

The thing about Elektra is, she flashes back so often you wonder if she may have experimented with acid back in her days at Superhero U."- Arizona Daily Star

"Too Talky to Triumph"- Variety

Another laugh out loud one:

Elektra girds her loins with less intensity of purpose than if she were scanning the darkness for signs of copyright infringement."
-- Lisa Schwarzbaum, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

Ahhh well, The good reviews will suddenly start rolling online, and the movie will still be a $20M opener hit.

No way it will pull itself to 20% AFTER having 15 reviews at 0%. Its impossible. The most it can get would be 9%. Regardless of a 20 million opening, it will tank next week when it will drop over 60%

A drop near 60% is expected for a film like this. Still, I think it will get a 30m opening. Reviews are irrelevent for a film like this. It might even have good wom.

I would say reviews are irrelevant but you have to admit the movie is bordering on really bad reviews and it will probably end up with less than 10% fresh. Even Van Helsing mustered over 20% and Punisher over 30%. 0-10% is like Rollerball,Catwoman and Eck Vs Sever terriotory. I dont think it will affect the opening much but was there ever a movie that mustered 10% or less that opened over 25million. The way I look at the reviews is say that only 30% of the critics loved Michael Bay films but only 5% loved Elektra, it tells me only 17% of those critics that love critically trashed movies loved Elektra so they are almost part of the sheep audience

you know, inspite of all these bad reviews? Elektra is getting some really good word of mouth from over in Aussie where it apparently opened yesterday. So who knows.#

Plus its first FRESH certified review http://www.rottentomatoes.com/click/mov ... id=1351172

although i still debate that Varietys review was very much borderline
