I am most overjoyed over this film's success and wish it the best of luck in its endeavour to become the second non-American $200m+ grosser.

A new age in cinema is dawning. Initiated by Titanic, spurred by Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, the global box office is steadily gaining in influence and importance. With Russia's box office registering insane increases from year to year, and China and India becoming wealthier, we're moving towards a global environment where the United States does not need to be the break or make territory for a blockbuster. We've already seen evidence of it this year with Troy, The Day After Tomorrow, and King Arthur.

So ya, good things to look forward to :)

Very good for Collateral.

I am also happy to see Howl's Moving Castle doing such amazing numbers. Spirited Away was better than 95% of all Disney flicks I've ever seen and I can't wait to see the HMC.

Also, glad for The Polar Express doing decent business overseas. Even though it's rather unlikely, I still hope for it to reach $250m ww.

Early International Weekend Report December 3-5

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason
crossed the century mark at the international box office this weekend after 25 days in release. Thanks to openings in 10 more territories and solid holdovers, the weekend estimate is $16.4 million at 3,200 playdates in 33 territories, which raises the international cume to $108 million.

In Germany, Bridget had an excellent weekend, grossing $4,088,311 from 728 screens. The debut was 140% bigger than Bridget Jones's Diary in US$ and 60% bigger in Euros. It was Working Title's biggest opening day ever in US$ and local currency. The Edge of Reason was also the No. 1 film in neighboring Austria with a weekend gross of $629,061 at 111 dates. It had a 40% market share and was 135% ahead of the No. 2 film, National Treasure. In US$ it was 164% bigger than the opening of Diary and it was 67% bigger in Euros. Bridget opened No. 1 in German-Switzerland with $802,525 at 83 dates, which was 100% bigger than the opening of Diary.

Bridget's mediocre openings in Latin American and Asia continued with a $481,999 debut from 149 screens in Brazil, which, thanks to weak competition, was good enough for first place. The opening was below Diary's opening, excluding previews. Hong Kong opened Bridget at No. 1 also, but again with a mediocre $361,079 at 33 dates, which was 5% bigger than Diary and Love Actually. Bridget was poor in its Filipino opening with just a $119,931 opening from 34 screens.

The Edge of Reason opened extremely well in smaller European markets, however. In Finland the picture grossed $437,239 from just 40 screens, which topped most movies including blockbuster hits like Spider-Man ($420,000) and Shrek 2 ($375,621). In Turkey Bridget took $508,408 from 107 screens to top destroyed previous romantic comedies like Something's Gotta Give by 35% and Love Actually by 56%.

Taiwan had an excellent No. 1 opening. The weekend gross was $563,220 at 50 dates, which was the biggest opening ever for Working Title in Taiwan and 122% bigger than the opening of Diary.

In holdovers, Bridget was No. 2 in the U.K. behind The Incredibles (week 2) and ahead of the opening of Christmas with the Kranks. Bridget had a 20% market share in its fourth week with a weekend gross of $3,209,207 (£1.7 million) at 486 dates, off 41%. Bridget's 24-day cume is $56,997,908 (£30.6 million). It was 50% ahead of the original in US$ and 17% ahead in Pounds. It has just passed the final total of Notting Hill in US$ and will pass it in Pounds this week. It will pass the final totals of Diary in US$ this week.

In Australia, Bridget was No. 3 in its fourth week, right behind National Treasure (week 2) and the opening of Team America. Bridget's weekend gross was $890,532 at 257 dates, off 35% and the 25-day cume is $11,868,978. It just passed the final total of its original ($11,353,608).

Bridget was No. 1 for the third week in a row in New Zealand ahead of the openings of The Grudge and Christmas with the Kranks. It still had a 28% market share. The weekend gross was $299,020 at 64 dates, off 33% and the 18-day cume is $1,854,878. It just passed the final total of Diary and will pass the final total of Love Actually this week.

Bridget was No. 4 in Spain behind the opening of National Treasure, week 2 of The Incredibles and the opening of a local film. It was ahead of the opening of The Polar Express with a weekend gross of $1,208,648 at 255 dates, off 37% and the 17-day cume is $6,795,377. It is 62% ahead of Diary and Love Actually.

At this rate The Edge of Reason will pass its predecessor's $208,667,028 international total and has a solid shot at $250 million. Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason opens in 6 more territories next weekend including France through Mars and Belgium and South Korea.

The Polar Express grossed an estimated $10.7 million from 25 markets on 4,400 screens for a $24 million total.

The picture opened well in Italy, grossing $1.6 million (€1.2 million) from 455 screens. The debut surpassed The Grinch by 11% and ranked second in the market behind the sophomore session of The Incredibles.

In France the picture wasn't strong at all with a $1.6 million (€1.2 million) weekend take from 670 screens. The debut was on par with The Grinch and Cats and Dogs.

In Spain The Polar Express grossed $1.1 million (€800,000) from 363 screens. With school holidays on Monday and Wednesday the picture looks to improve on its opening.

The picture opened in third place in Denmark and Finland, grossing $190,000 and $77,000 respectively. In Iceland it was No. 1 with $38,000.

The Polar Express also opened in first place in Peru, grossing $91,000 from 34 screens.

Holdovers were the key to Express's gross. In its second in Germany the film only fell 6% to $1.5 million (€1.16 million) from 775 screens for a $4 million (€3.1 million) total. In Mexico it was off 36% to $1.1 million (Pesos 13.4 million) from 500 screens. It was off 38% in Japan, grossing $1.1 million (¥115 million) for a $4.1 million (¥426.6 million). In its third week in Australia the Robert Zemekis production grossed $583,000 (AU$753,000) from 226 screens, which was off 21% for a $2.7 million (AU$3.5 million) total.

The Polar Express opens in the several countries next weekend including the U.K., the Netherlands, Sweden, and Taiwan.

Alexanderopened very well in Mexico through Warner Brothers last weekend. The Oliver Stone epic grossed $1.34 million (Pesos 15 million) from 400 screens to rank first in the market with a 27% share. These results surpassed the openings of Gangs of New York by 21% and Gladiator by 14%.

Seven Dwarfs (Sieben Zwerge - Männer allein im Wald) has grossed a phenomenal $51,110,696 in 39 days in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg. It was No. 3 in Germany in its sixth week. The weekend gross was $1,486,353 at 749 dates, off 39% and the 39-day cume is $43,853,938. It just passed American Pie 2 ($30,812,120) to become Universal's 2nd highest grossing film ever in Germany in US$ and Euros, behind only Jurassic Park ($55,043,929). In Austria, Seven Dwarfs held strong at No. 5 in its sixth week with a weekend gross of $99,879 at 78 dates, off 41% for a $4,752,087 total. It will pass the final total of Shrek 2 this week and is close to passing the final total of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. It is already Universal's fourth highest grossing film of all time in Austria behind Babe, Jurassic Park and The Flintstones.

The Spongebob Squarepants Movie had solid success in its first foreign territory last weekend. The Nickelodeon animated comedy grossed $967,522 from 313 screens in Mexico over the three-day weekend, which was better than Rugrats: The Movie. Outside of Latin America, the U.K., and Australia the picture shouldn't do too well, but it might be able to claim $25 million by the end of its run.

Team America: World Police also had its first international opening last weekend. It opened in Australia, however, grossing $968,430 from 142 screens, which ranked second behind the sophomore session of National Treasure. Team America can boast a huge $6,820 screen average, but will likely fall fast and struggle to reach $3 million. South Park grossed a relatively strong $31.1 million in its entire offshore run and with success in Germany and the U.K. Team America could match or pass that mark.

The Manchurian Candidate
made $1,167,759 over the weekend for a total international gross of $25,586,801.

UPDATED International Weekend Report December 3-5:

The Incredibles fell just 18% from last weekend's record-setting weekend, grossing $36.3 million from just 24 markets for a phenomenal $104.6 million total. The picture has yet to open in Germany, Brazil, Mexico, South Korea, Russia, Australia, and many more.

The heaviest business came from holdovers. In the U.K. the picture grossed $8.1 million in its second (and technically third) weekend of release. The Brad Bird-helmed production has grossed $29.9 million to date. In France, The Incredibles grossed a stunning $6.5 million, off only 29%, for a $17 million total. Italy secured $4.4 million, down just 19%, for an $11.7 million cume-to-date. Spain was off 33% to $3.7 million for a $10.1 million total.

The Incredibles also had several fantastic debuts. In Japan recorded a phenomenal $7.3 million from 689 screens, which although ranked second to traditionally animated Howl's Moving Castle it was the second highest non-Japanese animated opening ever behind Finding Nemo's $10.3 million. The Incredibles grabbed highest opening ever for a BVI picture in Argentina ($617,000 on 157) and Venezuela ($369,000 on 65). The picture also opened in French Switzerland ($595,000 on 34) and Thailand ($469,000 on 143).

With business like this The Incredibles will pass $200 million before Christmas Day, end up with no less than $325 million, and has a shot at passing Finding Nemo's $525 million. Pixar's latest vehicles have progressed steadily since its first film in Toy Story:

1995 - Toy Story - $170,162,503
1998 - A Bug's Life - $200.6 million
1999 - Toy Story 2 - $239.163 million
2001 - Monsters, Inc. - $269,493,347
2003 - Finding Nemo - $525 million

It seems at first international audiences didn't accept the computer animation. They stuck with traditionally animated fair like The Hunchback of Notre Dame ($225.2 million) and Pocahontas ($204.5 million), but they quickly began to accept computer animation and the genre finally tapped into the mega-blockbuster market with Finding Nemo in 2003.

Alexander grossed $4.02 million from 686 screens from 20 markets over the weekend for a $14.2 million total. The picture has only opened in one major territory to date. That was Mexico where the Oliver Stone epic opened last weekend, grossing a somewhat strong $1,328,040 (Pesos 14,923,476) from 400 screens to rank first in the market with a 26% share. These results surpassed the openings of Gangs of New York by 20% and Gladiator by 14%.

In one of its historically-located countries Alexander had a surprisingly potent $948,356 from 83 screens. Greece's opening was especially impressive given that there was a taxi strike on Friday and a locally televised football derby on Saturday. The opening was in the area of Troy, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and local blockbusters A Touch of Spice and Brides. Perhaps the media cloud surrounding the Greek lawsuit to ban the film in Greece attracted attention to the film.

Alexander also had superb No. 1 openings in the United Arab Emirates ($526,767 on 39), Portugal ($412,809 on 53), Norway ($373,529 on 45), Singapore ($191,327 on 27), Serbia ($109,960 on 6), Israel ($73,270 on 30), and Latvia ($41,368 on 3 - the sixth biggest opening of all time there).

Decent holdovers included Taiwan's $400,000 from 110 engagements for a two-week total of $1.8 million. The Philippines recorded a $442,510 gross from 62 screens while Turkey had a $325,000 weekend from 64 screens. Other impressive holds came from Denmark ($265,814 on 48) and Croatia ($84,403 on 11).

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason crossed the century mark at the international box office last weekend after 25 days in release. Thanks to openings in 10 more territories and solid holdovers, the weekend gross was $17,101,738 at 3,507 playdates in 33 territories, which raised the international cume to $108,444,233.

In Germany, Bridget had an excellent weekend, grossing $4,218,145 from 728 screens. The debut was 124% bigger than Bridget Jones's Diary in US$ and 50% bigger in Euros. It was Working Title's biggest opening day ever in US$ and local currency. The Edge of Reason was also the No. 1 film in neighboring Austria with a weekend gross of $686,782 at 111 dates. It had a 40% market share and was 135% ahead of the No. 2 film, National Treasure. In US$ it was 178% bigger than the opening of Diary and it was 64% bigger in Euros. Bridget opened No. 1 in German-Switzerland with $604,811 at 56 dates, which was 100% bigger than the opening of Diary.

Taiwan looks to be the exception to the rule with a stunning pole position debut $563,220 at 50 date. That was the biggest opening ever for Working Title in Taiwan and 211% bigger than the opening of Diary.

In holdovers, Bridget was No. 2 in the U.K. behind The Incredibles (week 2) and ahead of the opening of Christmas with the Kranks. Bridget had a 20% market share in its fourth week with a weekend gross of $3,209,207 (£1.7 million) at 486 dates, off 43%.

Bridget's weekend gross was $890,532 at 257 dates, off 34% and the 25-day cume is $11,868,978. It just passed the final total of its original ($11,353,608).

Bridget was No. 4 in Spain behind the opening of National Treasure, week 2 of The Incredibles and the opening of a local film. It was ahead of the opening of The Polar Express with a weekend gross of $1,350,034 at 331 dates, off 30% and the 17-day cume is $6,936,729. It is 65% ahead of Diary and Love Actually.

At this rate The Edge of Reason will pass its predecessor's $208,667,028 international total and has a solid shot at $250 million. Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason opens in 6 more territories next weekend including France through Mars and Belgium and South Korea.

The Polar Express grossed $11.3 million from 25 markets on 4,400 screens for a $24 million total over the weekend. No countries broke the mold as they all had somewhat mediocre openings followed by relatively strong holds.

The picture grossed $1,581,910 (€1,191,736) from 455 prints in its opening in Italy. Polar ranked second behind The Incredibles and bested The Grinch's $1.1 million debut as well as Ice Age's $1.3 million start.

In France the picture wasn't strong at all with a $1,831,377 (€1,379,672) weekend take from 670 screens. The debut was 3% higher than The Grinch and 13% better than Cats and Dogs.

In Spain The Polar Express grossed $1,196,644 (€901,495) from 363 screens. The opening was 10% higher than The Grinch. Its 3 IMAX screens, which were less than 1% of the total screen count, accounted for 6% of its business, grossing $67,000 (€51,500). With school holidays on Monday and Wednesday the picture looks to improve on its opening.

The picture opened in fourth place in Denmark and Finland, grossing $200,243 on 55 and an estimated $77,000 respectively. In Iceland it was No. 1 with an estimated $38,000. These are fairly modest openings and could mean a less than $2 million total from all Scandinavian countries. To put that into perspective, Shrek 2 has grossed $16,628,322 from all five territories and is still playing in most of them.

The Polar Express opened officially in the United Kingdom last weekend at 4 sites (1 in West End and 3 IMAX screens), grossing a solid $198,152 (£104,632). The picture broke house records on all IMAX screens in London, Manchester, and Bristol. Polar opens wide next weekend with competition from The Phantom of the Opera, Blade: Trinity, and Garden State.

Other openings include Poland ($215,000 from 69), Malaysia (No. 1 with $131,751 from 19), Indonesia (also No. 1), and Peru (No. 1 with an estimated $91,000 from 34).

Like at home, Polar's vitality overseas has been its strength over time. In its second week in Germany the film recorded no drop whatsoever, grossing $1,609,351 (€1,233,597) from 775 screens for a $4.1 million (€3.2 million) total. In Mexico it was off 31% to $1,111,116 (Pesos 12.6 million) from 500 screens. It was off 34% in Japan, grossing $1,183,222 (¥122,107,500 for a $4.2 million (¥432.9 million). The Polar Express rose to second place in Brazil, grossing $355,410 (Real 978,013), which was off only 10%. It has $1 million (Real 2.6 million) to date.

In its third week in Australia the Robert Zemekis production grossed $594,165 (AU$768,151) from 226 screens, which was off 20% for a $2.7 million (AU$3.5 million) total.

National Treasure continued its slow rollout with great success. In Spain the adventure picture grossed an impressive $3 million from 355 screens to finish in second place. The opening topped The Mask of Zorro's $2.6 million and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider 2's $2.3 million. Overall the Jerry Bruckheimer production grossed $8 million for an early $18.1 million international cumulative total.

The Forgotten had a stellar weekend abroad, grossing $4,422,578 from 1,654 screens in 36 markets for a $32,497,126 total. Highlighting the weekend was South Korea's phenomenal $756,192 opening from just 82 screens. That topped The Sixth Sense by 18%. The Julianne Moore thriller also opened well in France ($979,790 from 238) and Russia ($519,188 from 120).

Seven Dwarfs (Sieben Zwerge - Männer allein im Wald) has grossed a phenomenal $51,110,696 in 39 days in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg. It was No. 3 in Germany in its sixth week. The weekend gross was $1,486,353 at 749 dates, off 37% and the 39-day cume is $43,853,938.

HOWL's MOVING CASTLE: Japan Wk. 3

HMC still leads the pack, adding $20m since last weekend ($45m).....of which $10m was made Mon-Fri.....down about 50% from the last weekday period of $19m+.......but these are still mammoth figures.

This largish drop during the week has allowed Sprited Away to close the gap......and although its still lagging behind HMC in weekend gross.....its having slightly better holds.....

Spirited Away did better during the past week adding $24m+ on top of its 2nd weekend total ($34.5m)....

Hauru No Ugoku Shiro (Howl’s Moving Castle) - $65,922,472 ($9,856,721, -16%)
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (Spirited Away) - $58,843,983 ($7,918,131, -9%)
Harry Potter 3: POA - $54,252,202 (¥5.9bn - $9,249,391/ ¥998.9m, -20%)
Harry Potter 1: PS - $54,108,840 ($8,166,111, -34%)
Harry Potter 2: COS - $54,008,035 ($9,689,851, -15%)
The Matrix: Reloaded - $53,798,114 ($6,523,551, -30%)
Bayside Shakedown 2 - $49,484,385 ($5,984,935, -24%)
Lord Of The Rings: ROTK - $45,050,269 ($6,517,391, -13%) or $48,858,559 week
Mission Impossible 2 - $40m+ (-16%)
Star Wars 1: PM - $39.1m ($4.5m, -18%)
Star Wars 2: AOTC - $37,242,554 ($4,547,919, -22%)
Artificial Intelligence - $37,018,808 ($5,456,659, -17%)
The Matrix: Revolutions - $36,927,375 ($4,799,059, -16%)
Jurassic Park 1 - $34.57m (-9%)
Jurassic Park 2: The Lost World - $34.2m+ (16-Days, -35%)
Finding Nemo - $33,259,624 ($5,792,357, -27%)
Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines - $32,780,580 (446,421,000 Yen - $3,772,626, -58%)
Lord Of The Rings: TTT - $30,717,397 ($4,156,628, -29%)
Spiderman 2 - $30,479,140 ($3,084,946, -40%) or $30,690,327 ($3,106,321) Actuals
Spiderman - $29,518,825 ($4,485,362, -54%)
The Last Samurai - $29,455,679 (Â¥3,181,213,350 - $4,688,970/Â¥506,408,750, -0%)
The Day After Tomorrow - $28,384,889 ($3,821,533, -26%) or $28,382,210 Actuals

It's going to be a close race.....though i'm starting to think that the early prediction of $300m+ is going to be tough to match.....Spirited Away's drops is not exactly shabby and despite the larger opening.....HMC only has a narrow lead of $7m.......Christmas will be the deciding factor.....

Since you track all this stuff, Arch, tell me, do you think that Toho's projected $450 million gross is ANY realistic at all?

Big International Weekend Report December 3-5!

The Incredibles and Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason joined the ranks of $100m international grossers last weekend, making them the 16th and 17th films to pass the mark in 2004.

The latest Pixar and Working Title hits join Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban, Shrek 2, Spider-Man 2, Troy, The Day After Tomorrow, The Passion Of The Christ, I, Robot, Van Helsing, Shark Tale, King Arthur, The Village, Something’s Gotta Give, Collateral, Garfield and Fahrenheit 9/11 in the list of films released internationally in 2004 to surpass $100m. Of these six passed $200m, five $300m, three $400m and one (Potter) $500m.

The Incredibles
saw a $7.1m opening in Japan help its cause, although it had to settle for second place in the territory behind local animated hit Howl’s Moving Castle.

Bridget used launches in Germany ($4.3m) and a series of smaller territories to boost figures passed the $100m mark in its fourth week on international release.

Christmas fare The Polar Express and Christmas With The Kranks saw multiple territory openings boost their positions.

The Polar Express launched across the major European territories in France, Italy, Spain and on a four screen (three IMAX) platform in the UK (see separate UK/Ireland box office story in ScreenDaily.com’s World Box Office section) as well as a handful of other European territories, Brazil and Hong Kong. Its second week holdover in Germany also played well, slipping just 25% week-on-week.

Opening in the UK, Spain and Australia, as well as five smaller territories, boosted Christmas With The Kranks by 257% in its second weekend.

Howl’s Moving Castle’s continued strength at the top of the Japanese chart on 450 screens was joined at third place locally and at 14 on the international chart by the final chapter in the fifty plus year-old classic Japanese series, Godzilla: Final Wars. The film claimed $1.9m (Yen 200m) over its opening two-day weekend in Japan from 285 screens.

French comedy Narco slipped into 11th place off French and Swiss French-region launches, placing it just behind French police thriller 36, Quai Des Orfevres.

Other local successes included Spanish comedy Asombroso Mundo De Borjamari Y Pocholo which landed 13th on the international table with a $2m weekend gross from 302 screens. The film finished third on the Spanish chart behind BVI titles The Incredibles, in its second week, and fellow opener National Treasure.

Meanwhile making its international chart debut was Team America: World Police which launched in second place, behind National Treasure, in Australia.

Also worthy of note: The Notebook’s re-entry on the international table took the romantic drama’s international total to $20.6m. Combined with the North American cumulative ($81m), the Nick Cassavetes sleeper has now passed $100m worldwide and is close to outperforming the director’s last film, John Q, which grossed $102.2m worldwide.

BRIDGET JONES: THE EGDE OF REASON INTERNATIONAL REPORT:

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason had another great weekend at the international box office thanks to outstanding openings in South Korea, Belgium and France. Overall the picture grossed an estimated $21.5 million from 4,000 screens in 36 markets for a $139.7 million total.

Bridget was especially potent in South Korea where it got off to a great start on Thursday with an opening day gross that was Working Title's biggest ever and Universal's fourth biggest ever. The weekend estimate is $2 million at 156 dates, which is Working Title's biggest opening ever and Universal's 3rd biggest behind only The Mummy Returns and Jurassic Park: The Lost World. Comparisons to Bridget Jones's Diary are skewed because that film opened on a Saturday on just 54 dates.

Opening through Mars Distribution in France, The Edge of Reason took a phenomenal $8 million over the weekend, which is 77% bigger than Diary. That is the biggest non-French romantic comedy ever there shattering Notting Hill's $5.6 million ($1 million of which were previews). Reason's incomparable opening continued its current international trend with opening above 70% better than its predecessor.

Belgium opened Bridget on Wednesday and has grossed an estimated $975k at 60 dates in its first five days. It is No. 1 with 30% market share. This is Working Title's biggest opening ever and Universal's sixth biggest ever in Belgium. It is 129% bigger than Diary in US$ and 52% bigger in Euros.

Germany held strong in its second weekend with an estimated $3 million at 691 dates, off 30%. It is No. 2 behind the opening of The Incredibles. Bridget's 11-day cume is $8.6M, which is 53% ahead of Bridget Jones's Diary in US$ and 30% ahead in Euros.

Bridget also held well in Austria, where it is No. 2 with a weekend estimate of $460k at 97 dates, off 33% from opening. Bridget's 10-day cume is $1.6 million. It's 75% bigger than Diary in US$.

The Edge of Reason just passed Bridget Jones's Diary's $60,296,418 total in the U.K. after a fifth-place weekend take of $1.8 million (£915k) from 439 screens. It was off 45% and improved its 31-day total to $60.8 million (£32.5 million)

Bridget grossed $770k at 297 dates in Spain this weekend, off 39%. It is No. 4 in its fourth week and the 24-day cume is $8.9 million. It is 70% ahead of Diary and Love Actually.

Australia's weekend estimate is $460k at 225 dates, off 48% in its fifth week. It is No. 6 for the weekend and the 32-day cume is $12.8 million.

Bridget is No. 1 for the fourth week in a row in New Zealand ahead of the openings of Team America. Bridget's weekend gross is $188k at 56 dates, off 37% and the 25-day cume is $2.2 million. It just passed the final total of Diary and Love Actually.

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason has 14 more territories to open including Egypt, Greece and Thailand next weekend.

It is unfortunate that its domestic total is unspectacular. I wonder if it would have done better if it had been released wide on its first weekend?

Definitely, it'd have made $20+ million in its opening weekend and there's no way it'd get a multiplier of under 2.5...

Nonetheless, I am sure the producers are happy. The movie is on track to make at least $240 million worldwide.

INTERNATIONAL WEEKEND REPORT December 10-12:

"The Incredibles" maintained the top spot at the foreign box office over the weekend ahead of "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason" and "The Polar Express."

Meanwhile, domestic champ "Ocean's Twelve" made a splash in its first five openings, while "Closer" stepped out quietly but confidently in Italy, according to estimates.

"The Incredibles" was No. 1 for the third weekend in a row ahead of the vacations. The Pixar film took over $31 million, and commanded the top spot in at least 20 of its 36 territories.

The film was off to No. 1 starts in Germany, with $5.3 million; Brazil with $1.6 million; Austria with $1 million; and South Africa with $290,000. The other main driver was a phenomenal holdover figure in Japan in Week 2, where the suburban superheroes hauled in $5 million, down just 16% from its opening.

The weekend estimate for "Bridget" in its 36 territories was $21.5 million with an international total of about $139.7 million.

The Renee Zellweger comedy was the No. 1 film in France with $8 million, and Belgium with an estimated $975,000.

In its second frame, "Bridget" held No. 2 behind "The Incredibles" in Germany ($3 million, off 30%), Austria ($460,000, down 33%) and Brazil ($282,000, off 42%) and the film was No. 1 for the fourth week in a row in New Zealand.

"The Polar Express" tallied $16.4 million for a total to date of $47.1 million from 45 countries, according to estimates.

The Robert Zemeckis film, featuring the voice talent of Tom Hanks , opened at No. 2 in the United Kingdom with $4.4 million behind "The Incredibles," as well as in Taiwan (No. 1), Belgium (No. 3), Norway (No. 1) and Argentina (No. 2).

In key second weekend holdovers "Polar Express" made $1.7 million in France (down 9%), $1.2 million in Italy (off 24%) and $891,000 in Spain (down 26%).

"National Treasure" sparkled at No. 3 overall with takings of $11 million in nine countries, including No. 1 starts in Italy ($4.5 million) and Spain ($2.4 million), lifting its foreign total to almost $34 million.

"Oceans Twelve" took an impressive $4.5 million from five territories, according to estimates. In Australia, the star-studded Steven Soderbergh film was easily No. 1, earning $3.5 million.

"Closer" opened at No. 3 in Italy with $1.7 million.

"Christmas With the Kranks" took about $3.3 million in 23 markets, bringing its total to $10.3 million, including $3.4 million from the U.K. and $1.7 million from Australia.

"Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid"
took $1 million in 25 markets. The total of $31.8 million has now surpassed its U.S. gross of $31.5 million.

Completely agreed.. I really think this is one of the biggest marketing screw-ups of a a sure thing in cinema history.

Looks like it'll pass $240 million worldwide. Not bad at all considering its disappointing domestic gross.

Ya, it probably did place #1 in Italy however, its results were nowhere super blockbuster status.....

Finding Nemo - $6.6m (5-Day - 470 TC)
The Incredibles - $5.4m (524 TC/ 755p)
Shrek 2 - $3.5m (424 TC)
Brother Bear - $2.7m (€1,970,883 or $2,448,302/$2,437,867^ - 439 TC)
Toy Story 2 - $2.1m (234 TC)
Shrek - $1m (319 TC)

"Shrek 2" triumphed in Italy, corralling about $3.5 million on 424 locations, 202% bigger than the first "Shrek," which wasn't great in that market. That brought its estimated cume to $450 million, beating domestic's $436 million.

The good news though is that it has Christmas/New Years to look forward to.......and judging by the boost last year......it still has a great shot at $20m....

.....which should be enough to crack the $900m barrier Worldwide.
