Post Re: China Box Office
The film is so unbelievably and even sickly patriotic. The good word-of-mouth is definitely because of patriotism, but not just that - as already indicated with The Founding of an Army doing peanuts. The film is an action extravaganza and has moments of comedy. It really is the perfect combination of action and comedy that Chinese audiences have repeatedly loved. My wife even watched the first Wolf Warriors yesterday because she enjoyed it so much. There is still a huge potential audience that has not seen it, so it could still rule for a while until something else breaks out.

Wu Jing has only directed a few films, two of which are Wolf Warrior films. Jet Li has also directed before, and Chan is Hong Kong, whereas Li and Jing are Chinese. I've heard lots of talking about Jing, and it's always in comparison to Jet Li. The Chinese are not proud of Chan. They don't see Chan as their own, despite his ancestry originating on the mainland. Whereas Jet Li is the country's golden star.

Cool, I was definitely less aware of Wu Jing background as of Li's and Chan's popularity here.

I'd never heard of Jing before Wolf Warriors 2. :funny:

Its Tuesday estimate just got increased to $42m (from $38m). It is doing extremely well, but there is a glimmer of doubt that it's doing THAT well - I would not be surprised if the Chinese are artificially bumping its numbers to prove their blackout a success. But that's just a theory. ;)

Wow. If that's true...can't be too surprised I guess. :funny:

What the hell? How are estimates increasing by $4m over a weekday, that sounds fishy.

It is important not to take the US format and precedent and apply it to China. China is such a disorganised country. Seeing such an increase from estimate to "actual" isn't to surprising, and all reported box office numbers should never be taken as complete anyway.

Just as fishy as Trump winning the presidency with 3 million less votes.

I understand that this is not US but still that is a bit too high of an increase.

Well, we don't know how numbers are reported. The early numbers may only be a couple of cinema chains and only in Shanghai and Beijing. The later numbers ("actuals", but they are not true actuals) may use other cities in their estimate. Who knows. It's definitely not as accurate as American estimates/actuals reporting. And with numbers as high as $40m for a weekday (quite unusual), personally a $4m deviation doesn't raise any flags.

By the way, it has gone up another $1m now. It made $43m yesterday instead of the earlier reported $42m which was instead of the even earlier reported $38m. :funny:

Perhaps, but if I hear of the popularity this film has among people here, and then I'm not talking about those close to me, but just the commoner Chinese there's simply a huge interest to watch it which is exceeding everyone's expectations.

A $36m Wednesday for a cume of $268m. That Wednesday number will likely increase.

the anniversary has little to do with its success because if that were a factor then The Founding of an Army would be doing better than its measly $39m in 6 days.

I'm not sure how much the anniversary would have played a role eventually or not, I'd say not much either. Wolf Warrior 2 would have performed otherwise as well.

But The Founding of an Army, what I found out, some of my colleagues haven't even heard of the film, didn't know which film I was talking about, even after I showed them name in Chinese and the poster. It seems this film is just simply terrible, and several high ranking military officials have panned the film for not being historically accurate (and making the film too entertaining for the events pertaining in it).

Lo and behold its Wednesday number increased to $40m (cume now $272m).

Interesting as that is exactly the same scenario as Wolf Warriors 2. ;)

Went up again to $41.25 (cume $273.5m after 7 days).

Valerian has finally been added to the schedule ... on 25th August, along with Baby Driver and Cars 3. What a crammed weekend!

The National Day holiday (which also contains Mid-Autumn Day this year) is from 1-7 October, which is why Jackie Chan's The Foreigner is released on 30th September, and also why no other foreign films (as yet) will be released for two weeks prior, the last one, War for the Planet of the Apes, comes out on 15th September. The Foreigner being the only big film in release will obviously help it, and having seven days to capitalise will make it seem like a blockbuster, but I get the impression that it won't be huge ... it is not a Chinese film, and it lacks the comedy element they love. Still, I am looking forward to it.

So there's estimates then "actuals" and then "revised actuals" :funny:

Regardless of that Wolf Warrior 2 is doing great and it looks like it would easily storm past Fate now as the biggest movie of the year. More reasons for the blackout to continue...ugh.

It will beat Fast & Furious 8.

I would classify them as "ever closer estimates". I do not believe the Chinese box office market has ever provided "actuals" as we understand the term. It's more like "estimates", "more accurate estimates", and "even more accurate estimates". :funny:

Day 8 $32.5m (cume $306m).

In #2 is Once Upon a Time with $24m opening day, which I thought might challenge Wolf Warriors 2 and be the reason for it not to beat Fast & Furious 8, but it doesn't seem to have had any impact.

Wolf Warriors 2 has started to slow, but not nearly enough for it to not out-gross Fast & Furious 8. Yesterday (Friday), it made $29m and now sits at $336m with two of the largest days of the weekend left to come.

Fast & Furious 8 has $392m, by the way. It's toast.

Do you think $500m is in play?
