>Assassination Classroom: Graduation claims its third-consecutive week atop the box office, but suffered a sharp decline due to the post-Spring Break weekend. The conclusion film in the popular multi-media series sold an additional 167,429 admissions, which brought its overall admissions to nearly 2.6 million after three weeks in release.

It's already outgrossed its predecessor, and continues to outpace it by almost 40% after three weeks in release. It'll begin to slow down now that Spring Break is over, but it's almost certain to exceed ¥3.5 billion ($30 million+) and probably exceed 3 million admissions as well.

>Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice wasn't affected much by the post-Spring Break weekend, and delivered a fairly strong third weekend hold, especially for a superhero film.

DC's biggest stars sold a further 90,014 tickets in its third weekend, but it still hasn't been able to reach 1 million admissions yet. Overall, its admission figures in the market are quite disappointing, but due to such a high avg. ticket price from premium format screenings, it's still tracking at a good pace to outgross The Dark Knight Rise's (even if it's just barely) to become DC's highest grossing film in the market.

>Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan experiences its usual huge drop-off over the post-Spring Break weekend, selling 96,707 admissions over its sixth weekend of release, but there's some excellent news following this weekend.

Since this year's film was able to play into a second week of Spring Break, it's very likely now to outgross last year's film, and has a strong likelihood become the highest-grossing film in the franchise. Doraemon films collapse from this point forward, but even though it will, it seems almost certain that the 36th installment in the franchise will exceed the ¥3.93 billion required to earn that title.

>Room finally reached Japan, and managed quite the strong debut. Playing in limited release on only 78 screens, starring Best Actress Brie Larson, the film sold a solid 38,127 admissions over the weekend. It ranked eighth over the weekend in terms of admissions, but actually tied Kamen Rider 1 to come in seventh place in terms of gross.

Couldn't that be a mistake? I mean, an identical gross?

If it's a mistake, it hasn't been corrected anywhere yet; both films are still listed with a weekend gross of ¥57,242,300.

That doesn't mean it isn't a error, though, and I doubt it'll be corrected if it's a mistake if it goes unchanged by next week.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Godzilla Resurgence Trailer!
Godzilla Resurgence (Official Trailer)

Following the success and response (both positive and negative) of Gareth Edward's revival of the Godzilla franchise, Toho is ready to reboot their own dormant franchise after 12 years and it begins with Resurgence, opening on July 29th this year.

The Godzilla franchise is Japan's second most-attended film series in history; having sold 99.25 million admissions from 28 feature films. The revival film, and 29th installment, of Japan's most iconic creation is being directed by Hideaki Anno (Evangelion), with SFX specialist, Shinji Higuchi (Attack on Titan), handling the film's special effects.

This gruesome new Godzilla comes in at a staggering 118.5m (389 feet), eclipsing every other incarnation of the character.

>Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare is the widest release so far this year (also wider than any film from 2015 except for Star Wars: The Force Awakens), which is fitting given it's going to have a massive opening weekend. This year's Detective Conan is the 20th installment in the franchise, marking its 20th Anniversary and will feature the series main antagonist - The Black Organization.

The Detective Conan film franchise has shown significant growth over the past few years (having set franchise record openings and totals for three-straight year so far) rather than remain mostly stagnant like other annual franchises, and has begun to climb toward blockbuster status, and it's more likely than ever to achieve that feat this year. Most of its Saturday morning/afternoon showings are already reaching 50% or greater capacity, and that's on the largest screens in the country.

I'm not projecting a debut above ¥1 billion yet, but given the increased anticipation for this year's release and considering last year's film opened to ¥875 million (3rd biggest of 2015), then it is certainly a possibility. Either way, whether it hits ¥1 billion or not this weekend, it's going to earn one of the biggest opening weekends of 2016 (likely Top 3). The only film that's probably guaranteed to open higher is One Piece Film Gold, and maybe Alice Through the Looking Glass and/or Finding Dory.

>Crayon Shin-chan: Fast Asleep! The Great Assault on the Dreaming World always opens with Detective Conan each year, and like its opening weekend pal, this annual franchise has also seen significant gains in recent years. Among all the long-running annual animated franchises in Japan, this one is the smallest, but it's recently been on the rise. I don't see any reason why the upward trend won't continue.

Major Earthquake News

There have been two large earthquakes hit Japan over the last couple days (the first being a 6.2), and the most recent one hitting early this morning (about 2AM), measuring a significant 7.3. Japan is no stranger to quakes, obviously, but these recent quakes have caused a bit of damage and a few deaths, too. These power earthquakes, and aftershocks, are occurring near Japan's southern most island, which wouldn't normally affect the box office much, but given the intensity and quick succession they've struck, it's understandable that the rest of the country may be weary of going to a cinema today or this weekend since they could be the prelude of a more severe earthquake still to come.

Hopefully, the worst is over, (tsunami warning has been lifted) though five more quakes measuring 4.0 or greater have hit in the past hour, with dozens more being 3.0 or greater.

Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare appeared (or still appears) to be heading for a massive opening weekend, potentially the biggest of 2016 (even after considering the rest of the year's releases), but these recent earthquakes and powerful aftershocks might put a damper on its debut this weekend. We'll see. It depends on how train schedules have been affected this morning/afternoon; how much damage this morning's significant quake has caused; and how people feel about going to the cinema after/during all this.

Conan's 20th anniversary release has such strong pre-sales and morning/afternoon ticket sales, that it's guaranteed to set a franchise record and make a serious play for ¥1 billion+ this weekend. And in fact, its ticket sales so far have been almost on par with those of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

I'll post any updates regarding the earthquakes, as well as post hourly ticket sales for Detective Conan. As I mentioned, it was/still is in store for a mammoth debut, so I'll post its hourly ticket sales alongside those of Star Wars and Yo-Kai Watch from December.

Some theaters, located in malls or hotels, are disabling their elevators as a safety precaution. I haven't come across any closing yet (aside from some on Kyushu).

After checking theaters in the prefectures of Kyushu island, pretty much all of the theaters on the island are closed for the weekend and have advance ticket purchased postponed until further notice.

Kyushu island has approx. 8% of the nation's theaters.

¥2/2.5 billion ($20-25 million) is the likely range. The Spider-Man effect depends on how much he's marketed, and how prominent his role in the film actually is. Since it's not a Spider-Man film, though, his appearance is unlikely to have a significant impact, but could provide a fair result.

Conan's initial ticket sales are also just over twice as much as last year's film at the same point-in-time! It remains to be seen if the recent earthquake and its powerful aftershocks are having, or will have, an impact on the rest of the day. It lost about 8% of its theaters this weekend due to the hourly 4.0/5.0 quakes throughout southern Japan.

Last year's film opened to ¥874.8 million on 688,623 admissions (#3 opening weekend of 2015).

What happens in such cases ? Is most of the lost business just permanently lost or will we be seeing better holds across the board on monday and/or next weekend ?

Hopefully these earthquakes are not a sign of bigger things to come. They've done enough damage already. :(

Well, Golden Week is in two weeks, so the lost business in the affected areas will probably be spread out over the course of the upcoming holiday period.

However, we'll have to wait and see if the worst is over, or if the worst is still yet to come. Hopefully the 7.3 that hit early this morning was the big one (following Thursday's 6.2 earthquake and all its aftershocks), and not the harbinger of a more severe earthquake still to come...

The aftershocks continue to be quite intense, with many registering at 4.0-5.0+ for the past several hours (the most recent sizable one was 5.5 just over 30 minutes ago; the third largest since the 7.3 from 9 hours ago). Not a good sign. And there's increased concern of all these quakes causing volcanic activity in the affected areas.

Conan has, somehow, managed to pull ahead of The Force Awakens at the same point-in-time, and it's having to deal with quite the handicap this weekend.

Note: The majority of Kyushu Island's theaters have been shut down for the weekend due to the ongoing earthquakes. The prefectures located on the island represent approx. 8% of the nation's theaters.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Detective Conan Ticket Sales Watch
Usual Locations (Two-Thirds of Market) - Real-Time Saturday Ticket Sales

10AM > 11AM > 12PM > 1PM > 2PM > 3PM > 4PM > 5PM > 7PM > 10PM > FINAL

39,622 > x55,638 > x79,473 > x99,228 > 124,143 > 156,171 > 176,298 > 194,209 > 229,193 > 285,429 > 289,656 - Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare

Compared to:

74,565 > 116,519 > 144,266 > 177,687 > 206,086 > 240,279 > 271,568 > 281,438 > 308,702 > 317,438 > 317,709 - Yo-Kai Watch 2
52,996 > x60,631 > x75,890 > 117,855 > 124,236 > 147,342 > 187,892 > 197,398 > 226,441 > 286,005 > 293,246 - Star Wars VII

Note: The majority of Kyushu Island's theaters have been shut down for the weekend due to the ongoing earthquakes. The prefectures located on the island represent approx. 8% of the nation's theaters.

Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare easily smashed its own franchise record from last year by nearly 50%, but more importantly, it nearly matched The Force Awakens for the day in admissions despite its handicap! Had the earthquakes not affected Kyushu Island so much, then it may have exceeded 300,000 admissions at the usual locations (or at least beaten Star Wars for the day). It also achieved a 54.5% capacity for the day!

Saturday Results (Two-Thirds of Market):
Tickets Sold/Available Tickets (% Capacity) - Film Title [Theaters/Showings]
317,709/530,456 (59.9% capacity) - Yo-Kai Watch 2 [231/1,727]
293,246/714,702 (41.0% capacity) - Star Wars VII [236/2,789]
289,656/530,905 (54.5% capacity) - Detective Conan 20 [230/1,502]

Now let's see what happens on Sunday, but looking at the ticket sales for the day, it's going to match or see a minimal drop for the day. It's looking very strong. A debut above ¥1 billion and 800,000+ admissions is looking quite good (maybe even 900,000), which will be very difficult for any other 2016 release to match.
