That's its English title which is a little odd.
The actual translation is Super High Speed!! Sankin-kotai! (edo period law which means Alternate Attendance). Sankin-kotai was a policy in edo Japan (1600-1800s) used to control the Daimyo (Lords) in the country. I can see why they'd change the literal translation though.
It's an edo period comedy about a samurai ordered by a corrupt member of the shogunate to perform the sankin-kotai (required law in which a Lord has to spend different years outside of his land) on a Daimyo (or Lord) of a nearby domain so he can have access to the gold in in the area. The trip normally takes 8 days to return back to edo (formally Tokyo), but he was ordered to do so in only 5 days. Hence where the "Mission Impossible" title came from I suppose.
I think it'll be interesting and fun, so I'll probably seek it out near the end of the year. A lot of Japanese comedies have exaggerate acting and over-the-top events, which are usually a blast.

Drama is the most-popular genre by far. There are so many drama films and tv shows.
Comedy is a popular genre, too. There are quite a few comedy films and tv shows. Though only domestic comedies have any success. The highest-grossing Japanese film this calendar year is a comedy - Thermae Romae II, and it'll probably be the highest-grossing overall live-action film (including Hollywood films) of the 2014 calendar year, too. Hollywood comedies and the vast majority of imported comedies barely make anything if they even get released.
Horror is probably the least-popular genre. There aren't many horror films made, and most of them are poorly received and underwhelm at the box-office. A few can breakout, though it usually requires a strong critical reception with a notable performance. Japan is known for The Ring and The Grudge, but outside of those, the genre is very weak.

I suppose to the general International audience, Japan is known for horror and anime, but to an insider like you, you know that comedies and dramas are the most well-known and popular. I suppose outside of Japan (apart from HK), or in the west, nobody knows of Thermae Romae II and the like, but they know of The Ring, The Grudge, and all the Hentai stuff, so this is what forms our opinion.

Well, if both Maleficent/Edge of Tomorrow disappoint and have openings comparable to Oz: The Great and Powerful/Jack Reacher rather than Salt/Oblivion, then I guess it could get 17-consecutive weeks at #1... But that's really, really unlikely.
I know Salt and Maleficent are completely different films with the exception of Jolie, but using Alice in Wonderland as a comparison is pointless.

>Mission Impossible: Samurai got off to a nice start, taking in ¥200,902,800 ($2.0 million) with 160,528 admissions on 251 screens. This makes it distributor Shochiku's best opening of the year, and it shouldn't have any trouble exceeding the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone either.
>300: Rise of an Empire came in higher than estimates, but still had a very poor debut of ¥87,304,100 ($856,000) with 57,642 admissions on 533 screens. If it gets lucky, then it can earn ¥400 million ($4 million), which would be 74% less than the original 300.
>Saint Seiya: Legend of Sanctuary had a modest opening of ¥82,032,900 ($804,000) with 55,252 admissions on 145 screens. Considering the low screen count, the figure itself isn't too bad, but I'm sure Toei was expecting a bit more. The film looks like it cost quite a bit as well.
>3 Days to Kill makes a surprise showing in the Top 10. No estimate could be gathered, which generally means an outright horrible figure, and while the debut is certainly very weak, at least it made the Top 10. It grossed ¥41,203,400 ($404,000) with 33,176 admission on 184 screens.

Isn't Edge of Tomorrow based on source material from Japan? Even if Maleficent under-performs, I doubt Frozen can beat Edge of Tomorrow.

Yeah, it's adapted from the light novel 'All You Need is Kill" from 2004.
A light novel is as the name suggests, a short novel, generally aimed at young adults. Just a quick search reveals that it was well-received among critics, but I have no idea of its popularity. I haven't seen many expecting huge numbers for it, though, so I'm assuming it wasn't a notable seller (I'll try to find more about it though).
Hollywood adapting or borrowing source material from Japan can often backfire, however, so even if the novel was really popular, that doesn't mean it'll translate into a lot of money at the box-office. In recent years, The Hunger Game films have flopped (Battle Royale plot), Pacific Rim disappointed (Evangelion, Gundam, among others), Dragonball was a major bust, and there are probably more examples that I can't recall at the moment.
But it still stars Tom Cruise, has posted respectable numbers elsewhere, and has strong reviews. I highly doubt it disappoints, and expect solid results in Japan. I'm currently expecting an opening around $3/4 million and a total of $25-30 million.
The film is also rated-G in Japan, so any younger fans the light novel may have that are interested in the Hollywood version will be able to see it.

>Frozen had a rough week (by its standards), and is heading into the weekend down about 35% from last Friday. It's also losing, percentage wise, more screens/showtimes than any past weekend, so I think the weekend drop could be similar.
Weekend opener, Thirst, looked like it even won Friday, but it's opening day was very inflated due to stage greetings. Saturday/Sunday admissions are much, much lower, so don't expect it to be a #1 contender despite the Friday performance.

They're just included into the overall total.
So if Edge of Tomorrow does $1 million in previews this weekend and has a $4 million opening next weekend, its total will be up to $5 million.
I think The Amazing Spider-Man changed the ruling on previews/opening weekends. Ever since that film, no previews have been included into opening weekends.

Ah I see. They're included into the total, in this case at the end of Sunday 6th July. Ok. But the opening weekend gross doesn't include them. Well, that's fair and makes total sense. The Japanese always do things right!
