>Spectre is still aiming for a ¥400 million ($3-3.5 million) debut. It'll depend on its avg. ticket price on whether or not it'll hit or miss the mark. Skyfall debuted to ¥454 million in 2012, achieving the best opening for a James Bond film. However, Skyfall didn't have a weekend's worth of previews prior to opening like Spectre (which could dilute the opening a bit), so they're they're not a 100% fair comparison.

If Spectre comes very close or exceeds the ¥400 million mark, I'd consider it a stronger opening than Skyfall's despite coming in lower simply due to the widespread previews it had a week ago.

>The Peanuts Movie's evening/night ticket sales almost mirrored those of its morning/afternoon ticket sales, so it should be evident now that it's not appealing strongly to kids/families. Instead, it appears to be attracting a little bit of various demographics to remain constant throughout the entire day.

Unless Sunday sees a significant increase, it won't be coming close to ¥200 million this weekend, but it should still gross ¥150 million ($1.2/1.3 million) or so. This is a bit disappointing, but for a non-Disney/Pixar imported animated release, you can't do that much better.

>Persona Non Grata also came close to matching its morning/afternoon business with its evening/night ticket sales, so it's not skewing too old. It's also on track for a weekend debut around the ¥150 million ($1.2/1.3 million) mark.

Tomorrow will decide which film, The Peanuts Movie or Persona Non Grata achieves the second place debut.

>High Speed! Free! started to lose steam heading into the evening as expected, but still delivered a pretty good first day. If its Sunday business doesn't collapse, it can still reach a ¥100 million ($800,000+) debut which is good for only playing on 120 screens.

>Kainan 1890 definitely isn't coming close to a ¥100 million debut, and will have to settle for ¥70/80 million (~$600,000) based on its Saturday performance. Toei just can't seem to turn a live-action film into any sort of success.

Among the holdovers, both Showgate releleases, Girls und Panzer and Raintree Country are in store for excellent holds, both dropping 10% compared to last Saturday.

Digimon Adventure tri. Chapter 1 - Reunion is flat, almost to the exact admission, compared to last week, so it's likely to remain in the Top 10 for a second weekend. Only playing on 10 screens, it debuted in 11th and rose to 8th last week due to it's incredible staying power.

Has The World of Kanako debuted in Japan yet? Because it is out in the US this month on-demand.

Yeah, it was released in June of 2014 as Thirst and underperformed. It's a bit surprising it took 18 months to reach the U.S. considering his previous film was well-received (it made the Best Foreign Language Film short-list, if I recall).

It's a good film, but probably Nakashima's weakest film that I've seen. Those include Confessions (an excellent film), Paco and the Magical Picture Book, and Kamikaze Girls.

Corpse, any chance that YW2 will open on the same level as YW1 (wasn't it the 2nd biggest opener of all-time in admissions?) or is a decline a given?

>Spectre is right on the cusp of the ¥400 million mark. Whether it's over or under the mark will come down to what its avg. ticket prices ends up being tomorrow.

Wherever it lands, it'll end up registering the second best opening weekend in the James Bond series, behind 2012's Skyfall's ¥454 million. However, Spectre had widespread previews last week that aren't included in its opening weekend, so taking that into consideration, it's debut is equally as impressive, if not more so, in my opinion.

After including last week's previews, and Friday take, its overall 6-day total should be between ¥850-900 million ($6.9-7.3 million).

I don't have too much time to do write-ups for the other debuts (will do with actuals), but they mostly opened in-line with expectations. And the holdovers fared pretty well, especially the two Showgate releases, despite some large seating/showtime cuts that welcomed the five wide-openers.

Yes, it was less than 2,000 admissions away from setting the record set by The Matrix Reloaded. And that's the question everyone's wondering right now, especially since Yo-Kai Watch 2 is opening against Star Wars 7.

2014 marked the year that Yo-Kai Watch became the new phenomenon in Japan, its "boom" or peak year so to say. The first film reached such heights as a result, that it's probably impossible to go any higher.

-Theaters opened at 5am just to meet the demand of the first film last year, with several theaters having it playing 20+ times a day, and it still managed to sell through 83% of its weekend tickets.
-91% of all Japan's pre-school/elementary aged children reportedly saw the first film in theaters. That's an absurd figure.

I don't think the sequels have anywhere to go but down at the box office, and expect the franchise will behave like Pokemon did back in the day. The first film was the biggest, and then each sequel dropped until they began to stabilize.

On a related note: Yo-Kai Watch 3 has already been announced for December 2016 (the third mainline game will be released next year, too), by the way. That should be a sign that advance ticket sales for Yo-Kai Watch 2 are strong, especially since it also begins its seat reservations next week, too.

Yeah, it's the weekend everyone's been anticipating since July, when both films were announced to open against each another.

Since July, theaters, convenience stores, etc., have been prepping for the weekend nearly half-a-year ahead of time:

-Advance tickets have been available for Yo-Kai Watch 2 since July 25th, and for Star Wars 7 since September 4th (exclusive deal with LucasFilm for Japan audiences).

-Both films had their final theater counts finalized for months (a couple could still be added).

-7-Eleven (very big in Japan) is running ticket sale promotions for both films, which is very unusual. They normally only promote a single film.

-Seat reservations for Star Wars 7 began a few weeks ago (many sold out showings though the weekend already), and Yo-Kai Watch 2 begins its seat reservations this upcoming week.

I'll have a full preview discussing the weekend sometime next week.

Interesting. I'll check it out when I can. It looks like it could be good, if a little dark.

What a welcoming sight after the record low weekend the box-office experienced last week.

>Spectre came in a bit lower than estimates, but still delivered an impressive start.

007's latest outing sold 262,663 tickets over the weekend frame across 591 screens, which brought its 6-day admissions up to a nice 632,959.

The weekend debut is 20% below Skyfall's, but Spectre had a unique opening, with widespread previews last weekend (which were actually higher than its opening weekend) and the Friday opening. As long as it can maintain a sufficient amount of screens/showtimes in two weeks when Star Wars 7 and Yo-Kai Watch 2 debut, it should be aiming for ¥2.5 billion ($20 million), and still has a chance to match Skyfall's ¥2.75 billion total.

>The Peanuts Movie got off to an unspectacular start, but as far as non-Disney/Pixar imported animated films go, the debut is pretty solid.

The Peanuts Gang's 3D adaptation sold 114,709 admissions over the weekend on 653 screens. Like Spectre, it's final total will depend on how many screens/showtims it'll be able to hold onto in two weeks against Star Wars 7 and Yo-Kai Watch 2, but it should be able to reach the ¥1 billion (just under $10 million) milestone.

>Persona Non Grata came in third place in terms of gross, but it actually edged out The Peanuts Movie to place second in terms of weekend admissions.

The biopic based on the true story of a Japanese diplomat assisting Jewish refugees during WW2 sold 118,453 admissions over the weekend on 329 screens. And again, like the two debuts above it, its final total will be determined on what happens to it and other holdovers in two weeks. There aren't many films targeting an older audiences this December, though, so it's chances of reaching the ¥1 billion mark look decent.

>Kainan 1890 really surprised me this morning when I saw its weekend figures. It came in much higher than estimates were suggesting, and even crossed the ¥100 million mark somehow.

The 1890 battleship disaster true story film managed to sell 88,295 tickets over the weekend across 309 screens. It's not a good opening, but it's certainly a highlight for distributor Toei considering how poorly their live-action films have performed over the past few years.

>High Speed! Free! Starting Days also came in above estimates, but it's not as surprising being a near limited release, which are always difficult to predict, and the fact that its ticket prices were likely to be high.

The animated prequel based on the Free! anime sold 67,829 tickets over the weekend on 120 screens. Not bad.

Yes, but it's worth noting that major releases often had previews in the early/mid-2000's so it's certainly possible it did.

Of those on the list, I know that Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, War of the Worlds, and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines have previews included.

All-Time Opening Weekends [Admissions]
Admissions [Screen Count] - Film (Distributor) {Release}

01. 1,486,743 [631] - The Matrix Reloaded (Warner Bros.) {June '03}
02. 1,484,916 [408] - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Toho) {Dec. '14}
03. 1,469,755 [796] - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Warner Bros.) {June '04}
04. 1,467,945 [919] - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Warner Bros.) {July '07}
05. 1,421,738 [760] - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (Disney) {July '06}
06. 1,390,446 [858] - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Warner Bros.) {Nov. '02}
07. 1,359,454 [826] - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Warner Bros.) {Nov. '05}
08. 1,357,977 [758] - Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (Fox) {July '05}
09. 1,279,120 [578] - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Warner Bros.) {Dec. '01}
10. 1,198,210 [729] - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (Herald/Shochiku) {Feb. '04}
11. 1,190,009 [841] - War of the Worlds (Paramount) {June '05}
12. 1,186,413 [881] - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (Disney) {May '07}
13. 1,140,081 [300] - One Piece Film Z (Toei) {Dec. '12}
14. 1,138,689 [639] - Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (Fox) {July '02}
15. 1,110,913 [638] - The Matrix Revolutions (Warner Bros.) {Dec. '03}
16. 1,104,980 [448] - Howl's Moving Castle (Toho) {Nov. '04}
17. 1,043,267 [550] - Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (Toho-Towa) {July '03}
18. 987,387 [428] - Rookies (Toho) {May '09}
19. 930,586 [408] - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (Toho) {July '03}
20. 923,711 [863] - The Da Vinci Code (Sony) {May '06}
21. 921,341 [807] - Spider-Man 3 (Sony) {May '07}
22. 880,697 [922] - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 (Warner Bros.) {July '11}
23. 828,149 [859] - Alice in Wonderland (Disney) {Apr. '10}
24. 819,738 [190] - One Piece Film Strong World (Toei) {Dec. '09}
25. 812,557 [481] - Ponyo (Toho) {July '08}
26. 810,000 [318] - Spirited Away (Toho) {July '01}
27. 805,350 [409] - Boys Over Flowers: Final (Toho) {June '08}

The only film missing from the list is Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. Weekend admissions are, mostly, easy to come by going as far back as 1998, but unfortunately they're unavailable for this one.

However, when Episode III debuted, it was reported as achieving a franchise record first day by opening above Episode 1's "500,000" admissions and "¥700 million" first day. So, taking that into consideration and assuming Saturdays and Sundays were still on par with each other as they have been for over a decade now, Episode 1's opening weekend should be at 1.1/1.2 million admissions.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; 2016 BO Year Begins!
Jeremy Kay in Los Angeles 09 June 2003 04:00 :

Quote:
The Matrix Reloaded broke the all time industry record of an opening film in Japan by grossing $18.5m, including previews, as the Warner Brothers sci-fi sequel raised its international total to an estimated $300m. The remarkable bow (¥ 2.2bn) from 632 screens included the territory's biggest ever preview gross of $7.5m (¥ 892m) from advanced screenings on May 24 and 31. In fact May 31 yielded the biggest single-day preview gross of $4m (¥ 465m), beating Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets by 3.5%.

Compared to opening weekends without previews it was the third biggest bow ever behind Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets. According to Warner Brothers the total opening gross was 259.3% bigger than The Matrix, 107.2% bigger than Chamber of Secrets (81% of Chamber's total without previews), 137.1% bigger than Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, and 183.5% bigger than Spider-Man. The opening was also 136.4% bigger than all time total box office champ Spirited Away.

I guess that makes Yôkai-Watch the biggest opening ever when excluding previews. :typing:

Yes and by quite a bit, too, since that article lists Harry Potter as having previews. That probably means the majority of the other early/mid-2000 films on the list had previews, too.

However, previews were common/normal back then unlike today, so there's no point in attempting to remove any preview figures, in my opinion, so the charts will remain as they appear.

I'm going to post this weekend's seating/showtime counts in a bit, then I'll have the first preview of next week's Star Wars 7/Yo-Kai Watch 2 showdown up tonight.

Theaters have begun to list their full weekend seating/showings for both films for next week. At a glance, in terms of seating, Star Wars 7 has the advantage on Saturday while Yo-Kai Watch 2 may have the advantage on Sunday. Some theaters that have Star Wars 7 on their biggest screen on Saturday are swapping it with Yo-Kai Watch 2 on Sunday.

Star Wars 7 will have the showtime advantage since theaters will have multiple formats (subbed, dubbed, 3D, 4D, IMAX, etc.) to support, and it'll have later showtimes than Yo-Kai Watch 2 will, however, many locations are opening earlier next week to begin showing Yo-Kai Watch 2 as early as 7AM.

Wave 2 of December's releases hit theaters.

>Orange is receiving an impressive release, likely due to how strong the manga sales have been over the past several weeks. The live-action adaptation of the shojo (teen romance) manga should find its way to the top of the box-office this weekend fairly easily.

As mentioned, the manga sales have been notably strong recently, and there are many signs indicating the film will be quite successful. I could see it debut over ¥300 million this weekend, and since it's pretty much the only film this December that's heavily targeting teens/young adults, it's likely to have very good legs. Shojo-based films generally have strong legs regardless, and the genre has been hot this year with Strobe Edge and No Longer Heroine performing very well earlier this year.

>Living With My Mother is the latest film by renowned director, Yoji Yamada (84). Yamada has been directing films since 1961 and he continues to release a new, often praised film most years even to this day. His films almost always find decent success at the box-office, and this one should be no different. It should be in contention for a second place debut, trying to overtake Spectre in its second weekend.

>Kamen Rider X Kamen Rider Ghost & Drive Movie Wars, the 52nd theatrical release in the long-running series, has reportedly done very well as far as advance ticket sales are concerned, outpacing the two films from earlier this year. I don't think it'll open much higher than ¥200 million, but let's see if this is the one that'll get the franchise back to having regular ¥1 billion entries.

Also of note - In addition to some locations opening an hour or two early (7AM) to begin showing Yo-Kai Watch, and staying open after midnight to play Star Wars, some theaters will NOT be showing trailers before these two films next week to maximize showtimes even further through the weekend.
