Hmm, this is mildly fun.

I think 2009 might provide us with two new champions:

in # (2012 - 25% chance) and A (Avatar - 75% chance?).

and boy, V, Y, Z are weak sauce.

Van Helsing holds a record! Who knew?! lol.

Z is a shitheap.

Avatar could very well be first for A....2012 won't come close.

Don't mean to take away from the research and work you put into this list, but shouldn't Revenge of the Sith be the record holder for R.

The Star Wars movies are always 'officially' listed weirdly,
'Star Wars' for ep IV,
then the subtitles only for ep V & VI,
and then 'Star Wars: ep x - blank' for the prequels,
so I just went with that.

Well done, good concept.

Yay, King Kong owns a record.

Perhaps we can also do the following:

* Top movies by running time in 30min blocks
* Top grossing movies in terms of the number of letters in their title....I'm sure Pirates of the Caribbean 1 would rank quite highly.

Here's a random tidbit. On the top 100 all time adjust for inflation list, here are the first letters that come up the most:

S: 18
B: 10
T: 9
G/L: 8

Wouldn't have expected "B" to be the second most frequent movie title letter.

The record holders in their respective letters, Iron Man and HP1 will be taken down by their own sequels next year.

Proud Ryu - this is a great thread. Always wanted an odd box office tidbit type thread. And I love it when Box gets numerical!

Z is so weak. What films have been released and begun with Z? Zorro? Zelig? But interstingly - there is a film coming that will most likely not only be a new record for Z but also take Z over $100m and that is Kevin James' followup to Paul Blart - The Zookeeper!

Thanks for the thread support everyone. I kind of like these oddball stats - something different.

Nice additions, Box!

I like the other suggestions and I'll work on them as time permits, though I have a feeling Box could easily beat me to it.

Z was the hardest to find since it was the only sub-100 one. The contenders beyond Zoolander were Zodiac ($33,080,084), Zack and Miri ($31,457,946), and Zathura ($29,258,869). Close, but no cigar. Agreed that Zookeeper should easily take the record!

Post Re: Pointless Thread Series: Top Grossing First Letters
I realized I could do the title length one without too much trouble.

Notes:
1. I counted spaces as characters because it's easier
2. There is at least one film with 1-50 characters in the title
3. I don't have every single film with box office numbers available, so there could be some missing

Post Re: Pointless Thread Series: Top Grossing First Letters
The pattern for the # of titles in each count is almost a nice normal curve, peaking at 13 letters and smooth out from there, although the graph will be skewing to the right somewhat.

"Up"dated. :)

(with Up's final gross).

Doesn't look like (500) Days will get the record for non-alphanumeric.

(500) Days of Summer $32,343,342
* batteries not included $32,945,797

Sooooooo close!
