 Who cares?
Why do all of you care how much money a movie makes?
I'm sure no one here is in any way connected to the people who actually make money with those films, so why does it make all of you so happy if "Movie A" makes a certain amount of money or grosses more than "Movie B". Box office success isn't a quality indicator, but when reading through these boards, you can easily get the impression that this is exactly what many people here seem to think. The more money is makes, the better it is.
If you like a certain movie and want the creators and participants of said movie to be rewarded with dollars, fine. But how does this "make your day" or how is it "the best news ever"? I don't get it, please enlighten me.

With the Number you can only say how many people saw the movie. Its not about quality of course. But when a movie has high numbers it has hit something in people`s taste. And i think thats an interesting indicator.
It can also show how good marketing works (a least in some cases).

Something to feel good about and forget one's insignificance in this world through a favorite movie, sports team or politics.

It's just for fun. Super competitive, highly engaging fun.
I've always been interesting in sales and how popular a product is, so this is even cooler since it's with movies.
But, here's a warning, it will take over your life if you get started, because it's so addicting.

Yeah. I like statistics. I like to look at them and analyze them. And I'd rather not due it on my mom's tax forms. Is there a problem with that?
On another note, why do you think so many people follow sports the way they do? "Yeah, person A was signed to Team X for six years with (insert money here), and then they traded Person B and C to team Y for person D and E. I mean, D is pretty good, but his numbers don't even compare to B's."
You get my point. It doesn't just happen with movies and box-office. It's FAR more commonplace with sports, and far more accepted, when it is essentially the same thing.

I could pretty much say the same and wonder why the german conversation thread is over 5000 posts now.

Do you follow football? Do you care who has the assists and who scores the goals. Do you care what a team's record is? Why?
Do you follow the box scores of baseball or basketball? Why?
Statistics are a means of measuring achievement. In the cinema, that means box office. That's why we care. Duh.

i saw "Elektra" and liked it, i rented "Catwoman" and "Gigli" and i also watch films that dont even release in uk theaters, IE i dont give a shit about box office numbers when it comes to films.
What i did find is that EVERYONE [myself included at one time] is WAY too quick to slap labels on films that dont perform at the box office and dismiss it in their minds. Its just wrong - you should never insult a film unless you see it, critisizing the way its marketed perhaps. But i get soo much "This ones a stinker" on these boards, especially notable cum-elektra time, and its like, no one even bothered to SEE the movie to pass judgement.
I loathe when people use box office numbers to stipulate the quality of a movie, and i agree, people give way too much care to box office statistics when at the end of the day it shouldnt go further than a passing fun hobby

basically, all that stats mean to mean is how assured my favourite films or actors are going to be in the world, and chances of a sequel or continued success.
