And Warner did not approve $150 million for I Am Legend starring Arnie and directed by Ridley Scott !!! I remember that. I Am Legend with the Ahnuld would have been cool

Re: Production Budgets
Nice with SAW series being so popular the opening weekend would itself seal the production cost for the movie.

Nice the usual skulls and swords popping out of the screen along with the victims heads that would be a scene to watch

Shutter Island on a normal course should have no problems to cross that budget of 80M

Re: Production Budgets
Alice will make that back easily, remember studios get almost all the money from the first weekend. Plus DVD sales will be huge.

Sheesh. Studios really need to learn how to minimize budgets. It's unfair of you to include the marketing costs into this, but neglect merchandise and tie-ins.

But even still...a 200m-250m budget does somewhat diminish how big of a success it is. It's going to make back its money and be profitable, but the film still shouldn't have been that big. Well, you can't expect that with the inflation and rising costs all around for the box-office to get bigger, but not for the bugets. $200 million is the old $150 million, hehe.

Re: Production Budgets
$200-$250m isn't that crazy.
Up - $175m, 2012 - $200m, HP6 - $250m, Star Trek - $150m, Monsters Vs Aliens - $175m, A Christmas Carol -$200m.
Budgets have definitely increased quite a bit over the past few years.

To me, if Charlie cost 150m, Alice shouldn't have been that much more. But I guess Burton wanted more, Depp wanted more, and they had more bigger actors (even though all of them outside of Depp weren't a draw at all IMO). Magnus, everything gets more expensive. The props get more expsnive, the effects get more expensive and so on.

No, it's not. It's not the only reason, but it is one of the reasons. Others are:
- 3D - Your reasons

Budgets have definitely increased quite a bit over the past few years. HP6 has a big excuse to have a huge budget like that. The 3 main actors probably get $50 million among themselves. Add to that the all of the constantly returning cast/crew that get bigger and bigger pay bumps and around $100 million goes even before the film starts shooting. Alice really does have a huge budget. It doesn't look that good either. There were some lame effects.

Sheesh. Studios really need to learn how to minimize budgets. Do you fucking realize how much they made on production ties alone? They made tens of millions even before the movie came out. It's gonna be a huge moneymaker all things considered, and $250 m is more than a fair price for it. We all know WW b/o is just one layer of the business model, and yet we keep talking about breaking even with regard to theatrical grosses, as if it really matters. No, it doesn't. Not anymore.

Re: Production Budgets
Does Radcliffe + Grint + Watson really equal that much more than Depp + Burton?
I thought I read that converting non-3d films to 3d was only 5M or so? I don't know how much extra it takes to actually film something in 3D.
While I agree 250M is a lot even for franchise films, I felt it was OK in this case considering the talent and the tie-ins involved. But I will say there's been a lot of films greenlit in the past few years with little or no chance of making profit (i.e. Wolfman, etc.); this is particularly true of super high budget horror and sci fi (that's not presold), limited audience aside these films almost always have horrendous legs.
