Meet the Fockers vs. Pirates of the Carribean
Both are movies that were expected to be big, but not THAT BIG. Both are more or less huge box-office surprises. Pirates of the Caribbean opened in July 2003 with $70,625,971 over the 5-day frame, Meet the Fockers started last month with $70,517,720 in five days. Surprisngly similar, isn't it? After its third weekend, Pirates of the Caribbean, stood at $176,838,155 while Meet the Fockers already broke the $200 million-mark with $204,297,870. Pirates of the Caribbean went on to make $300+ million, obviously helped by the summer weekdays and the great WoM. Now Meet the Fockers seems to have very good WoM as well.
In this thread, I'll track these two huge box-office hits against each other. As of now, I think that Meet the Fockers will end up with slightly less than Pirates of the Caribbean, topping out at around $295 million, but it is very possible that it'll top $300 million considering how much ahead of Pirates of the Caribbean it is now.
Will it be able to reach $300 million? Will it outgross Pirates of the Caribbean by the end of its run or fall short? What do you think?

BJ says Fockers will rip Pirates to pieces  its already 28m ahead in terms of gross alone  Next wknd Fockers will clear 20m in the three day alone Pirates make 18m in its 4th wknd dropng 18% not bad . Even its wk days wont help it from being crushed by fockers because forckers is showing the better holds at the moment  I expect them to be very close but in the end fockers will win \:D/
BTW my prediction for MTF is 330m but I will be happy as long as it passes 300m

BJ was soo right on this one. Meet the Fockers is heading for a $300+ million finish. If it can maintain drops under 35% (which it will, because of great WOM), it's definently going to pass $300 million. As of yesterday, it's at $208 million. For today and tomorrow, it'll get up to $212 million. Over the 4-day weekend, it'll gross $20+ million, and go to about $230-235 million. Then, with consistant 35% drops and those great weekday drops, it'll slowly, but surely, pass $300 million. \:D/

Glad someone finally got around to this as I have been saying in the prediction thread that this movie should be tracked.

So here is the breakdown:
The biggest gap between the both was on the 12th day, it was around $29.5 million. Ever since then, Pirates of the Caribbean is gaining on Meet the Fockers except for Fridays and Saturdays. On all other days, Pirates of the Caribbean is performing better due to the summer weekdays. This weekend, Meet the Fockers will be ahead thanks to the 4-day weekend, but the gap will get smaller after that. Pirates of the Caribbean is could definitely benefit from its summer weekdays.
As of now, I predict that no matter which film will win, it'll be close, really close. In a $5 million-range. As of now, I go with Pirates of the Caribbean, giving Meet the Fockers a total of $301 million.

This thread breaks my heart. MTF up against POTC???? Remember when POTC's run was considered amazing and unique?
What the hell happened?
I feel like ROTK/TPOTC all over again, with three 2004 films making almost as much if not more than ROTK

I think it will be close. MTF is doing great considering it is holding up well compared to one of the leggiest blockbuster movies of the past couple of years.

Inflation happened. I also dare to consider Meet the Fockers' run nothing short of amazing.
However, what makes POTC's run even more amazing is that it is actually not a sequel or any beloved movie and it is not based on any popular literary work.

I voted for MTF but after actually punching in the numbers myself, I don't see MTF going above $285 mil unless it has a couple of sub-20% drops. The weekdays are just too low compared to POTC's.

I too think that the weekday numbers will give POTC the edge. While another 4-day weekend will help its run in February abd push it past $290 million, overall, it should fall short of POTC's total.

POTC's release could not have come at a better time in 2003. Reloaded, X2 and Bruce Almighty had made all of their money by then. Hulk was a failure. T3 was pitiful. Upto that point the family and the general audiences were looking for a good movie to see other than Finding Nemo. Here came the perfect adventure movie with an excellent performance by Johnny Depp. The movie was fun for the whole family and hit it big time with all demographics.
