Thanks Michael
Anyway, I am sad to see The Motorcycle Diaries losing theatres again. I can't believe that a movie that opened with a $50,000+ PTA, great reviews and a good WoM never got more than 300 theatres...stupid Focus!

I think the WoM has actually been better than the reviews. Critics are often required to see certain films, where as, one who suspects a film to glamorize Che Guevara and has a real grudge against the guy will most likely avoid it ( *cough* box_2005 *cough*). I know it got a great reaction at theatres the two times I saw it
But, yeah, Focus is doing a uber crappy job of releasing the film. But, then again, it's also possible that theatres simply don't see it bringing in enough money and with the onslaught of new indie/oscar-bait releases, there's just not enough room in the megaplexes. The Indie/Limited Release theaters have kept onto it, which is a good sign...

The film does glamorize Che Guevara, though...
This is not my point, however. Considering the movie's steady PTA, one would think that it brings in enough money in the theatres. Focus already did a pretty bad job releasing Shaun of the Dead...

Not really. It doesn't glamorize his politics, but him as an early man who, unlike his counterpart, is not apathetic about wordly affairs, and, unlike most doctors, cares more for his patients than the inflow of money. In the trip itself, the only thing we can really like about Che is his subtlety and the few moments in which he speaks. And, of course, that's sufficient. But, the film does not, as many critics have tried to point out (IDJOTS!), go out of its way to glamorize his social ideology or him as a person. If you consider the document on which the film is based, the film isn't slanted but presents an image that was already present in the text.
Focus needs to work at it, but, you have to consider everything. A good studio can't automatically get a film in wide release; theater distribution is a dual relationship: it depends on the theater companies too. Also, I'm sure Focus has analysed the situation (because, don't you think your view would be obvious to them? I mean, they're paying guys to schedule and deal with distribution who should know more than you, me, or even Brandon Gray ) and, possibly, has come up with the conclusion that expanding isn't worth it because the film doesn't have many Oscar chances anyways. Focus could put more effort into the expansion, but it's likely that public interest itself isn't there (and, realistically, it never is when it comes to foreign films, sadly) and they'd end up losing more money...
I think you have to admit, though, that they did a fine job with Lost in Translation...

That's quite a good theatre count.....
Decembers are not known for the big TCs due to the big November holdovers and a larger than usual batch of movies release each weekend or expanding......
3290 puts O12 at #69 overall widest opener just above of this year's Resident Evil 2.
Outside of LOTR, no other movie has passed $14k average.....hmmm.....O11 being the closest at $12.3k.
1 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King NL $72,629,713 19.3% 3,703 $19,613 $377,027,325 12/17/03
2 The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers NL $62,007,528 18.2% 3,622 $17,119 $339,789,881 12/18/02
3 The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring NL $47,211,490 15.1% 3,359 $14,055 $313,364,114 12/19/01
4 Ocean's Eleven WB $38,107,822 20.8% 3,075 $12,392 $183,417,150 12/07/01
5 What Women Want Par. $33,614,543 18.4% 3,012 $11,160 $182,811,707 12/15/00
6 Scream 2 Dim. $32,926,342 32.5% 2,663 $12,364 $101,363,301 12/12/97
7 Catch Me If You Can DW $30,053,627 18.3% 3,156 $9,522 $164,615,351 12/25/02
8 Cast Away Fox $28,883,406 12.4% 2,774 $10,412 $233,632,142 12/22/00
9 Titanic Par. $28,638,131 4.8% 2,674 $10,709 $600,788,188 12/19/97
10 Cheaper by the Dozen Fox $27,557,647 19.9% 3,298 $8,355 $138,614,544 12/25/03

Actually, I expected at least 3,400 theatres for Ocean's Twelve, but I gues 3,290 is fine as well.
The Polar Express should be able to hold on very well even with this theatre loss.

Good numbers but i expected atleast 3500 for O12, but 3290 is not bad at all. Also good for TPE, i think The Incredibles is going to lose quite a few theaters this weekend

It seems that Blade: Trinity won't be increasing the amount of theaters for the weekend.

Maybe....or maybe LiT just got its own job done by keeping attracting the audiences. Sure, one can bring up this foreign movies argument, but what is with Shaun of the Dead? Dawn of the Dead obviously has proven that zombie movies can be successful and Shaun of the Dead was getting excellent reviews...meh...
