I could see Kong causing Narnia to drop at the most 40% but nothing more after that.

Amazing opening for Narnia. I have a feeling that it is being underestimated somewhat.

Pretty decent opening for Syriana as well. The legs won't be good however.

FANTASTIC numbers for Brokeback Mountain and Geisha.

Good for Narnia.

Syriana wasn't so hot.

Memoirs and Brokeback were excellent.

Aeon Flux dropped big deservingly.

Just Friends had a nice hold.

if comparing BBM's PPA this weekend to the others in the Top 10 Best PPA weekends list, then the movie is pretty much headed for at least $50 million! That would be awesome!

Brokeback Mountain - highest PTA for a live-action film.

Seriously, how do Disney animated films get such high PTAs? A near $800,000 PTA for Lion King? Even if there were 20 showtimes a day, that all sold out in 1500-seaters, at $8.50 a ticket (which was the adult ticket price in 1994, so the sales would be even less because of all the kids seeing the movie), that would still only be a PTA of $765,000.

So what's Disney's secret?

I guess I was wrong about Narnia and Aeon Flux not being able to co-exist together... :|

Some other notables I thought I'd mention:

12 17 The Polar Express - IMAX WB $946,000 +12.9% 66 - $14,333 $3,832,000 - 3

Woo! Up 13%!

Strong number for Geisha, but I just noticed its budget was $85 m, so it really will need to do well in its expansion and at the Oscars.

Excellent average for Brokeback, but it's too early to tell how it might do with its 2.83 multiplier. There was a rush out on Friday.

That, and that only. Not only is it huge, but ticket prices are higher there as well.

To sit in the center, you have to pay $22.00(same for kids). The rest is $13 for adults and $10 for children

The theatre tends to hold, what, over a thousand and prices are usually close to 20 bucks a head. Yea, and shoooort run times = $$$$$$

There you go. The prices for the kids probably makes the crucial difference, as they are lower than the average tickets nationwide.

Yes, but I think there's alot more to it than that.

1 The Lion King BV $793,376 2 $1,586,753 $312,855,561 6/17/94
2 Pocahontas BV $448,285 6 $2,689,714 $141,579,773 6/16/95
3 Hercules BV $426,051 2 $852,103 $99,112,101 6/20/97

These 3 are far above the rest. Toy Story 2, hotly anticipated did $300,000 from ONE theater.

Here are some figures pre-Lion King:

10 Aladdin BV $98,332 2 $196,664 $217,350,219 11/13/92
12 The Nightmare Before Christmas BV $95,616 2 $191,232 $50,003,043 10/15/93
15 Beauty and the Beast BV $81,073 2 $162,146 $145,863,363 11/15/91

Here are some figures for recent films by Disney:

6 Atlantis: The Lost Empire BV $164,505 2 $329,011 $84,056,472 6/08/01
7 Brother Bear BV $145,970 2 $291,940 $85,336,277 10/24/03

And here are Pixar:

4 Toy Story 2 BV $300,163 1 $300,163 $245,852,179 11/19/99
5 A Bug's Life BV $291,121 1 $291,121 $162,798,565 11/20/98

I'm sure alot of the pattern had to do with hype. Lion King was VERY anticipated, but the Toy Story 2 figure does seem a bit lower than I would have thought, so part of it might have also had to do with a different box office system then for those particular theaters. It's also interesting to note that The Lion King opened on a Wednesday, and was able to do $2.2 m over its first 5 days ($1.1 million average!!!)

That's an astonishing theatre average for Brokeback Mountain.

I see no reason Kong and Narnia won't be able to co-exist in harmony next week. Narnia will continue to suck in the younger crowd and pull in about about $35 million, while Kong will draw the more mature punter and about $70-80 mil. Should be one of the bigger weekends of all time, if we're lucky.
