Nah, just kidding. I just think it's odd that I live in the Bible Belt, and yet there hasn't been much in the way of audiences. It's still going to top $25 mil., though. I assure you I'm no fan of the books and I was almost going to stay away from this film because of the religious undertones, but I managed to slip in and see it by chance. The sold out report is no joke; families were abound waiting to see it. That's funny because that's something that makes me less interested in the film as well; the religious undertones. I hate religious stuff. I have never read the books (and don't intend to, I don't do the fantasy genre (at least when it comes to books) and haven't even read a Harry Potter book - I'll just see the movies instead). The movie does look decent though and I'll still rent it on DVD.
I've heard that with Narnia, the religious undertones are there if you want to focus on them but it is also possible to ignore them and just see it as a fantasy actioner in the vein of LOTR. It's not like it would be all that difficult to find religious undertones in almost any film if one really looks for them. Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, etc. have them, for example.

Not that anyone cares, cause this little European city will have no effect on the box-office for the first american weekend , but here It is.
I saw Narnia at 9:30. Theatre, a 500 seater, was about 85% full, which is really good. But this is a Original version cinema, frecuented by foreign students, so probably people familiar with the book; nobody knows it here in Spain, and It´d be more interesting to know how full the theatres that show dubbed films were (Also, those indcidentally make for the 95% of cinemas in Spain, if not more). Thing is, nobody knows the books in Spain, so every penny this movie makes here is by the power of Disney´s marketing and appeal, there is not a built-in audience for this at all.
I Didn´t like the film. Was bored through most of it. The only things I liked were the little girl, the beavers, and some vocal work (LIam Neeson, Rupert Everett). The CGI was painfully obvious sometimes, as was the blue screen, and the fact that It was all done mostly in sets made it look a bit cheesy, a bit clumsy sometimes. I also couldn´t grasp the moral of the story at all.
Some people clapped at the end. I also heard others groan at a particular ridiculous moment. Overall I´d say the reaction was positive, but not overwhelmingly so.

I'm finding it odd that I'm not seeing many (if any) sell-outs here in Independence, especially seeing as how this is the headquarters for the Community of Christ church.
Maybe it's the weather... It *has* been chilly, and there are *still* residential streets that haven't been plowed (yup, mine *still* has not had a plow come down).
I'm going to the first showing of the day (11am) as well as an 8:35pm tonight. So, I'll be sure to report how much of a crowd we get.

That's true. Even DOGVILLE had them, and I loved that movie. I just didn't want it to be too preachy about it, that would make me cringe.

Saw a 7:15 showing of Harry Potter last night. About 75% full in a 200 seater. Trailers for Superman, Happy Feet (I'm sorry, WHAT?), Fun with Dick and Jane, a couple more (I'm never good at remembering these).
Only sold out showing I saw was one for a 7:00 showing of Narnia.
As for film, I actually loved it. First Potter film I've found completely solid.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Saturday, December 10
11:00am showing
95% full (288 seater [largest in theatre])
TRAILERS
Last Holiday (good laughs)
Over the Hedge (lots of laughs)
Curious George (some chuckles)
Hoot (neutral; looks boring and been-there-done-that to me)
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (LOTS of talk)
Cars (most laughing was at Larry the Cable Guy's line)
This was the first showing of the day. Typically, the Saturday morning showings at our AMC have small crowds, with each movie getting a few of the total number of people there. Today, however, I swear every car in that parking lot musta been at AMC for Narnia, 'cause we were around 95% full at the 11am showing, and the parking lot was around a third full.
Movie was AWESOME, and it had *great* reactions. Good laughs at some place, some sniffling (myself included) in other parts... Had one child get scared and had to be taken out 'cause he was crying and saying "Help me" between sobs (at least, that's what it sounded like).
Applause at the end and tons of talking afterward.
Oh, and stay for an extra scene that comes on as soon as the acting credits are finished rolling.
A+!
Joy (who is disappointed at not having the Ice Age 2 trailer, but so excited about the PotC trailer!)

Saw Narnia at a 1:30 showing. It was more than 3/4's full in a 318 seater, pretty good for a matinee here.
Trailers -
Hoot
Open Season
Last Holday
Curious George
Glory Road
Pirates 2
Cars
Was tempted into getting my money back because the speakers weren't working properly, but my friends didn't want to and the speakers got fixed about 20 minutes into the film..
Eh... heard maybe 2 or 3 claps at the end. And while me and my friends were about to walk down the stairs from the last row, everyone waited till the extra scene was done. Also heard a "I think that's my new favorite movie of all time"...
As for me, I thought the movie was pretty well done and entertaining but I had some problems with it... I'd give it a strong B, maybe B+.

Syriana - 12/10/05 7:15pm showing 100% full (165-seat auditorium)
TRAILERS
Last Holiday (some laughs)
Firewall (lots of talk)
Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World (some laughs)
Hostel (talk)
Rumor Has It (silent)
I thought it was decent, but it seemed like the others really didn't....quite a bit of negative talk went on once the credits began (a good amount of people walked out as well).

Hmmm, looks like Syriana is really not in for great WoM judging by reactions on this site, the IMDB score and the Yahoo grade....

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
7:00pm showing (on two screens in 8-screen theater)
95% full- including 27 members of a church group (190-seater-second-largest in theater)
TRAILERS
Glory Road (meh- will probably be a hit though)
Ice Age 2: The Meltdown (LOTS of laughs- will be HUGE probably)
Hoot (another "meh" reaction- looks dumb)
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (HUGE reaction- looks fantastic)
Cars (some reaction- looks kind of lame to me though)
The Benchwarmers (LOTS of laughs- could be a hit)
THE MOVIE
The movie was AWESOME and the audience seemed to love it. It was MUCH better than I expected- great action scenes, good performances from the lead actors, wonderful special effects (The Beavers and Aslan ROCKED!), amazing set design, a great performance from Tilda Swinton, and a few very funny scenes. There were many gasps at the scary parts (the woman beside me was jumping out of her seat), huge laughs at some points, and yes, some sniffling (I'll admit that I did get quite teary-eyed) during two scenes in particular. I'll give it an A-.
The audience stayed around the final scene during the credits and there was lots of positive responses that I heard coming out the door. This movie is doing huge business. It will have some very nice legs. My fellow KJers who will not see Narnia, see it NOW! You'll love it.

Saw Capote in the afternoon. I thought the movie was just alright, but give Philip Seymour Hoffman his Oscar right now.

Movie
Syriana is arguably the most ambitious film of 2005 to date, and manages to send its message across with a large degree of success. Political corruption and global interaction (mainly through oil, the main factor of the film) are shown with a bleak, cynical lens that is unfortunately both understandable and accurate in today's world. Watching this film is a near exhausting experience because the film requires 100% attention paid to it at all times, or the viewer will quickly get lost and lose track of what's happening on screen. The acting from all involved, including George Clooney, Matt Damon, Jeffrey Wright and Alexander Siddig, is strong. Other notable actors fill up roles that are smaller but not necessarily less instrumental, including Chris Cooper, Amanda Peet, Christopher Plummer and William Hurt. Although this film will clearly divide those with different views on the situations presented in this film, it should be clear to almost everyone who sees it that this is a motion picture that asks/demands the viewer to debate and analyze what the movie presents. This is one of the best films of the year. A-
It was really hard to determine the crowd's reception to the film, so can't help you there.

Movie:
The movie rings very true. I liked the parallel storylines depicting the lives of the oil people, CIA and the recruits for madrasses. The ending is exactly what I would expect from a well researched and well made movie. People with little or no knowledge of the happenings of that area may find it confusing. The only complaint is that the movie lacks a true dramatic punch.
B+
P.S: Peeked into the 4:35PM showing of Narnia. Sold out in a 500 Seater.

7:20 PM, Sold Out in 350 seater (I'm guessing)
Trailers:
Firewall
Wolf Creek
Freedomland
Rumor Has It
X-Men 3
Crowd Reaction: Seemed pretty good, but nothing outstanding. Gasps and what not all in the right places.
Review: Really enjoyed it, although I found the plot very hard to follow and I'm still a bit confused. The acting was all top notch, especially from Clooney and Damon. B+

Saw a 9:00 showing of Narnia. Sold out in a 600 seater. Trailers for Hoot, Ice Age 2, Glory Road, Pirates of the Caribbean, Cars, and Curious George.
I thought the film did a great job capturing the tone of the book (which is one of my favorites), and it really kind of manifested this epic sense of itself that I really wasn't expecting. Can't say I was too thrilled with the acting, though, and the kids' lack of charisma didn't help much either. Enjoyable, though.
