Hmm. I missed this amazingly accurate comment earlier!

Seriously, though. I'd rather catch up on Jarhead and maybe, just maaaaybe, watch Walk the Line. Rent just looks so... so... "wait for DVD."

You won't even see it on DVD.

Be honest, wigger.

Wow. At the Tigard 11, The Ice Harvest, Rent, Just Friends, Pride & Prejudice, Yours, Mine and Ours, and In the Mix all open! Harry Potter is only on one screen, Walk the Line/Chicken Little each get one screen, and Zathura splits a screen with Derailed. Of all the movies, I think that's an especially good sign for In the Mix. Despite so much competition, it's opening there while Get Rich or Die Tryin', Stay, Waiting, The Gospel, A History of Violence (in it's entire run), Roll Bounce, Cry_Wolf, Underclassmen, and almost every Rogue Pictures film did not. It very rarely gets films that primarily appeal to black audiences, so I'm impressed.

On the other hand, the Lloyd Center 18 plays out just as I expected. Rent gets two screens while the other openers all get one screen, Harry Potter holds on to it's four screens and Walk the Line keeps it's two.

It was a typo, it is on one screen (the 160 seater was supposed to be in the mix. Hey, they both start with an I).

<<It is a "rock musical", this isn't Phantom of the Opera all over again.>>

This true.... Phantom of the Opera was watchable...Rent is excruciating.

Of the movies I've seen from this week's offerings (didn't see Ours Mine or In the Mix), Just Friends is clearly the best. It's as funny as the best moments in Wedding Crashers, and close to those in 40 Year Old Virgin.

I'm back at Duke for a visit, and today I floated in two movie theaters to get some information in addition to seeing a couple of movies. I chose one in the suburb area and the other in a busy shopping mall so that I don't get skewed by the location. Here is what I have:

Rent is definitely the best performer of all openers by far. It got 60-80% full for the two early shows in the suburb theater and sold out the 7:00PM show at the mall one 20 minutes in advance, which from my brief experience is great for the theater. I was glad that I bought the ticket at 6PM. The audience is 80% female, most of whom are gorgeous looking.

Pride and Prejudice is the next best. It also got consistently 70-80% full every show that I checked in both theaters. They are smaller screens than what Rent had, but still very encouraging.

Yours Mine and Ours also did pretty good, getting a lot of people for the couple of early shows in the suburb theater. The mall one only got about 20-30% full for the prime time show though.

Just Friends did OK but inconsistent.

In the Mix and Ice Harvest absolutely bombed. In the Mix had 0 person for the first show and 2-3 for the second show, while Ice Harvest had 2-3 people for the first and 4 for the second. I know In the Mix probably has to do with the location, and both are not matinee movies as adults aren't on holiday yet. Still, considering there were only 4 shows for each movie total, it's not good.

Rent
4:00 PM
AMC Southlake Pavillion 24

20% full (285 seats)

Trailers: Tyler Perry's Madea's Family Reunion, Rumor Has It, Cassanova, Memoirs of a Geisha, Freedomland

Movie:

On one hand it was a great movie, but that was mostly due to excellent acting, inspiring story, and amazing vocal work. Other then that, the film was really sub-par and unfortunately Columbus did a poor job of directing the film. The cinematography, costuming and other production work is generally uninspired which is unfortunate.

RENT
7:15 PM
About 90% full (much to my amazement, here in rural Pennsylvania....but hey, it was only a 120 seat theater......as the crowds the other reports echoed, it was about 75% teenage girl)

Trailers:
The Family Stone (a little laughter)
Last Holiday (ewww)
Casanova (eerie silence)
Memoirs of a Geisha (lots of laughter)
Freedomland

It was....Rent, just like on stage. It was awful, just like on stage. Everything I knew it would be. I will probably buy the DVD. I can't explain it. It's Newsies for the next generation.

The audience didn't seem too 'into' it, although I heard an "it was awesome' from a rather masculine looking gentlemen as I left. So my read may have been incorrect.

Saw 3 films today with 4 more to go on Friday. My theatre got all the new releases (P & P included plus Bee Season)

Yours, Mine, and Ours @ 5:25 - 30% full in 400 seater
Trailers - Missed them all. Arrived as the four studio logos were about to be displayed. It's hard to believe Sony, MGM, Paramount, and Nickelodeon all had a hand in this film. How much did it cost anyway?

Film - Pretty uninspired stuff but still fun if one is inclined to slapstick. Quaid gives a decent performance, surpressing the idea of phoning it in, something costar Rene Russo is obviously doing. A few of the kids stand out with good performances as well (Daniella Panabaker from 'Sky High' and Sean Faris from TV's "Reunion"). Overall, decent family film that is far better than it easily could have been. The audience, by and large, seemed to enjoy it as I heard audible laughs numerous times.

Grade - B

Pride & Prejudice @ 7:35 - 80% full in 200 seater.
Trailers - Bee Season - Seeing it tomorrow. No reaction.
Fun with Dick and Jane - Looks okay. No reaction.
Last Holiday - Looks horrid. No reaction.

Film - Astonishingly wonderful filmmaking with a revelatory performance by Keira Knightley. She gives the best performance from a female that I've seen thus far this year and I doubt anyone has the chance to surpass it.

Grade - A

Just Friends @ 10:25 - 75% full in 200 seater.
Trailers - Final Destination 3 - Looks like fun. No reaction.
The New World - Looks decent. No reaction. Wrong audience perhaps as much of the audience seemed to be in their teens.
Fun with Dick and Jane - See above. Some chuckles.

Film - Starts out humorless but becomes increasingly funny as it progresses. Anna Faris especially is a hoot and darn near steals the film.

Grade - B+

All in all, a very good night at the movies. I look forward to Friday when I will be seeing Ice Harvest, In the Mix, Rent, and Bee Season. I doubt they'll be of consistently high quality, especially with In the Mix well, in the mix (bad pun, I know).

Breakfast on Pluto at a 9.40 showing. Wouldn't guess more than 50 people were in the theatre. :-(

I was at my theater at 4:00 to pick up my schedule, where is what happened.

Rent
11:15 - 15 people.
12:00 - 14 people.
1:20 - 26 people.
2:45 - 39 people.
3:45 - 186 people (some school bought the theater).
4:35 - 21 people so far
(This looks to be the winner among freshman).

Yours Mine and Ours.
11:20 - 18 people.
12:15 - 8 people.
2:05 - 19 people.
3:05 - 33 people.
4:40 - 17 people so far.
(Pretty good for a kiddie matinee. Should be up there with Rent by the weekend).

Just Friends
11:10 - 3 people.
2:15 - 12 people.
5:15 - 6 people so far.
(Seems to be picking up after a slow start).

In the Mix
11:50 - 6 people.
2:35 - 12 people.
5:05 - 2 people so far.

Ice Harvest
2:30 - 12 poeple.
5:10 - 1 person so far
(For one screen releases, not good at all).

Pride and Prejudice
1:35 - 27 people.
4:35 - 10 people so far.
(Seems to be doing good for the type of movie it is).

But Harry Potter had attendence in the 50's for a couple of it's matinee shows.

Looks like the numbers should be similar to the Yahoo movie thread's projections.

It's only a matinee, so I really don't know. We had some matinees get 50 people on Monday, so I say it shouldn't increase that much.
