No surprise that Serenity dropped, but interesting that Into the Blue increased, being the first week and all.

Jewish holiday effect, I suppose.

Well, on one hand, Serenity's drop was softer than I expected. On the other, I didn't expect every other damn movie in the Top 10 to increase.

One can only imagine how A History of Violence would be doing if it was given a wider release. It's looking good for an expansion, unless the plan is to try to slowly roll it out for awards season.

Serenity continues to impress!

well, i am not really caring about the week numbers to be honest. i have already kind of given up on box office success, and have been more focused on the critical success, as that way leads to joy. i will pay attention to the 2nd wknd box office though, that is the last hope that i have for box office.

Bad news for Serenity...

But great again for A History of Violence! It deserves all the success it gets and more. Are they expanding it at all this weekend? It'd be awesome if it managed to stay around the 7-8 million mark in its second week.

Poor Firefly fans. Their movie is bombing badly.

Other than Serenity, nice increases all around.

I wonder if Serenity could approach a Star Trek: Nemesis-type 2nd weekend fall, which was around 73%, if I remember right...

Nemesis was partially affected by The Two Towers.

That explains it. I had just remembered the dreadful fall. The max drop I see for Serenity is 63%.

Perhaps Universal could tag on an extra 500 theatres this weekend. That would at least give the illusion of legs...

Aw, who am I kidding? It's over!

What? You thought the only side of Hollywood Jews were on was the production and business side? :-P On occassion, we look at movies too, not just make them.

And there was that little thing where even the Star Trek fans hated Nemesis and didn't go back.

Something is definitely going on with the 20-40% increases we're seeing.

Nope. It was the kids movies, and alot of public schools by now have the high holidays off even if only a small minority of people in the school are Jewish. That leaves alot of kids that didn't have class yesterday, some don't today, and you'll see it again on the 13th for Yom Kippur.

Where I grew up, we used to have school then, but no exams, etc would be assigned for that day. By the last two years of high school, we got the days off. Since there were only maybe 40-ish of us in the whole school (I'm guessing here), that would leave a good 700+ kids that pretty much just had a fun weekday off.

Alas, you're right. At least we got a good movie out of the deal. It would've been like salt to the wound if the flick was as bad as War of the Worlds was ;)

Hey, War of the Worlds was the bomb, yo.

I'll be seeing Serenity this Friday. Then again on Saturday. And Sunday. And every day next week. Twice.

Here's to bumping up the international numbers!

i didn't know that box office determined quality.

So i guess all of those "best movie" threads are pointless, cause its obviously Titanic as that made a ton more than every other movie ever released:)

What are you talking about. They liked the picture. They just didn't show up again.

WOTW was the movie, according to some was booed by the auds ( ) and mysteriously makes $234M.

Even though I did not like Serenity, I reported there was some applause at the end by some fans. Some people's crowd reports and reactions, in a bout of strange coincidence, always seem to mirror their own view of the movie.

Can't wait till Serenity comes to our little country. The Firefly pilot impressed me mightily, for a sci-fi TV show that is.
