BTW, is there a screen count for Proof yet? It's opening at a couple more than last week, so I assume it's getting some sort of expansion from 200ish theaters of before, right?

I say it's okay, since we know it won't attract a huge audience at his theater. I say the theaters are big enough.

Gospel is expected since urban films don't do well at Scott's place, but still, I can't see a PTA higher than Hustle & Flow's. Very bad for Waiting.

It doesn't hurt, but both Into the Blue and Serenity were in 600 and 400 seaters at Scott's place last weekend too.

Serenity dropped from 600/400 to 175/150, not surprising with Scott's crowd report, but it still limits its potential hold. 60% drop is probably what we are looking at.

kind of funny that a movie as good as Serenity is most likely going to implode this wknd.

Yet another small detail to squeeze in before I go out clubbing (hah):

Posted on HSX by bartleby

Topic: If my theater is any indication...

WALLACE AND GROMIT and IN HER SHOES are both huge longs. W&G's figure was slightly larger than the second Friday of CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY.

This also happened to be the theatre's busiest Friday since Memorial Day weekend.

My crowd reports are not very crowded in the day time, so I wouldn't be of much help. I can say that there were lots more women than guys at my showing of In Her Shoes, but there were some guys. One elderly guy who sat in the back by himself and laughed much more than he should have was a bit annoying.

Older audience seemed to be represented well, as were women, with a few guys thrown in the mix.

Guys, I only worked from 1-7 today, so here is an admissions rate.

Wallace and Gromit - 104 admits (5 showtimes)
In Her Shoes - 130 admits (5 showtimes)
Two for the Money - 134 admits (5 showtimes)
Gospel - 38 admits (3 showtimes)
Wating - 88 admits (2 showtimes)
Proof - 23 admits (2 showtimes)

It looked that Two for the Money was going to be the biggest opener among the freshman. Not bad for Wallace and Gromit for a kids movies. Pretty much what I expected for the Gospel. More than I thought for Waiting. Let's see what Friday's numbers tell us.

Also.

Flightplan - 142 admits (5 showtimes)
Corpse Bride - 90 admits (6 showtimes)
Serenity - 52 admits (5 showtimes)
Into the Blue - 102 admits (5 showtimes)

All in all, it was another very slow day for matinees. I was sent home 45 minutes early. I think the Angel's game is affecting us.

Saw Waiting at 10:15. Say it was about 40-45% full. Was late so missed all the previews. But they did have this new ad, it was like a parody of the Lion king with eagles. When the dad eagle was falling off the cliff a cell phone rings and the movie just and the eagles start saying CMON. Dunno if all AMC theaters do these things, but they're usually pretty funny. The movie was good. It surprised me that it really wasn't a total gross out comedy. The scene where they are fuckingup that evil woman's food and one towards the end are really the only scenes in it that make you go AWWWWWW THATS NOT RIGHT. It felt a lot more like Clerks, in the sense that it's just a day in these people's lives. Of course one of them has an epiphany at the end, and the rest just keep it up. I'd have to think it over, but as of now I'd give it a B/B+. Didn't really hear anyone talking about it one the way out but my friend said it was "really fucking funny". I think it'll make about $2M today.

Saw A History of Violence at 10:20pm in a 200-seater. It was about 3/4 full or so. The only trailer that got a reaction was Saw II, and it was a great reaction, too. The audience loved the two scenes that most people have heard about, as well as all the sick moments. However, in the last five minutes or so, the whole reaction took a big turn, and almost everyone booed the ending, surprisingly.

I thought it was great, though. More thoughts tomorrow. Gotta sleep for the SATs in the morning. :nerd:

I like the Soar preshow. It looks like Richard Rich style animation.

AMC currently has the worst line up of pre-movie commercials and cell-phone announcements.

Has anyone seen the Jack Black, 3-freakin'-minutes long commercial? Good god, I'm already tired of it. And, yeah, that thing with the birds and the ringing cell phone is horrible.

My 16-screen theater in Austin, TX

Wallace and Gromit (two 280 seaters)

12:40 - 38 admits (14% sold)
1:10 - 16 admits (6% sold)
3:10 - 57 admits (20% sold)
3:45 - 80 admits (29% sold)
5:30 - 114 admits (41% sold)
7:15 - 122 admits (44% sold)
7:50 - 145 admits (52% sold)
9:35 - 39 admits (14% sold)
10:10 - 19 admits (7% sold)

Total: 630 admits, a lot more than I was expecting, very good, not as good as Corpse Bride, but still very good, I can see a 4~4.5 million opening day.

In Her Shoes (280 seater)

12:35 - 73 admits (26% sold)
3:50 - 69 admits (24% sold)
6:50 - 129 admits (46% sold)
9:50 - 80 admits (29% sold)

Total: 351 admits, this is actually very disappointing to me, but I'm looking for a strong Saturday increase, I'm guessing a 3~3.5 million.

Two for the Money (280 seater)

12:30 - 67 admits (24% sold)
3:40 - 38 admits (14% sold)
6:45 - 75 admits (27% sold)
10:20 - 158 admits (56% sold)

Total: 338 admits, pretty much neck and neck with In Her Shoes, so again, 3~3.5 million methinks.

Waiting (225 seater)

12:05 - 16 admits (7% sold)
2:35 - 19 admits (8% sold)
4:50 - 44 admits (20% sold)
7:40 - 125 admits (56% sold)
10:40 - 186 admits (86% sold)

Total: 390 admits, whoa whoa whoa this was the surprise of the night, but low theater count, so I'm guessing around a 2 million Friday.

The Gospel (150 seater)

12:00 - 3 admits (2% sold)
2:30 - 18 admits (12% sold)
5:00 - 40 admits (27% sold)
7:30 - 116 admits (77% sold)
10:00 - 29 admits (19% sold)

Total: 206 admits, this is actually a very respectable number for an urban film at my theater, so I could see this still topping 10 million for the weekend, but it's hard to really make a guess for Friday.

Flightplan (two 225-seaters)

12:10 - 20 admits (9% sold)
12:55 - 23 admits (10% sold)
2:40 - 19 admits (8% sold)
3:20 - 19 admits (8% sold)
5:00 - 43 admits (19% sold)
5:40 - 44 admits (20% sold)
7:35 - 84 admits (37% sold)
8:00 - 100 admits (44% sold)
10:00 - 63 admits (28% sold)
10:25 - 30 admits (13% sold)

Total: 445 admits, isn't it interesting what an extra screen can do...but hey, maybe it's not just that. I wonder if Flightplan has a chance to be #2 this weekend, wouldn't that be crazy!

A History of Violence (280 seater)

12:45 - 25 admits (9% sold)
3:25 - 34 admits (12% sold)
5:45 - 50 admits (18% sold)
8:05 - 153 admits (55% sold)
10:35 - 65 admits (23% sold)

Total: 327 admits, strong sophomore performance, just behind Two For The Money

Serenity (280 seater)

12:25 - 34 admits (12% sold)
3:30 - 41 admits (15% sold)
7:25 - 166 admits (59% sold)
10:30 - 91 admits (33% sold)

Total: 332 admits, OK sophomore performance, but already falling down to Violence's level is not that good, a 50+% drop is in order, maybe 60%.

The Greatest Game Ever Played (225 seater)

12:15 - 32 admits (14% sold)
2:55 - 15 admits (7% sold)
6:55 - 82 admits (36% sold)
9:55 - 21 admits (9% sold)

Total: 150 admits, meh, this is a Saturday movie, no idea how much Columbus Day is gonna help this one.

Into the Blue (150 seater)

1:15 - 10 admits (7% sold)
4:00 - 16 admits (11% sold)
7:10 - 23 admits (15% sold)
9:45 - 26 admits (17% sold)

Total: 75 admits, this is just plain horrible, of course, it did horrible last week too.

Just Like Heaven (150 seater)

12:50 - 21 admits (14% sold)
3:15 - 11 admits (7% sold)
5:35 - 26 admits (17% sold)
7:55 - 85 admits (57% sold)
10:15 - 19 admits (13% sold)

Total: 162 admits, still kickin

Corpse Bride (225 seater)

1:00 - 16 admits (7% sold)
3:05 - 10 admits (4% sold)
5:15 - 26 admits (12% sold)
7:20 - 74 admits (33% sold)
9:30 - 71 admits (32% sold)

Total: 197 admits, lost a screen, but still alive

Constant Gardener (225 seater)

1:05 - 20 admits (9% sold)
4:10 - 26 admits (12% sold)
7:05 - 61 admits (27% sold)
10:05 - 25 admits (11% sold)

Total: 132 admits

40 Year Old Virgin (150 seater)

12:20 - 5 admits (3% sold)
3:00 - 19 admits (13% sold)
7:00 - 35 admits (23% sold)
9:40 - 38 admits (25% sold)

Total: 97 admits, has a chance to outlast Into the Blue

ALL MOVIES IN ORDER OF ADMITS

630 admits - Wallace and Gromit
445 admits - Flightplan!!!
390 admits - Waiting!!!
351 admits - In Her Shoes
338 admits - Two for the Money
332 admits - Serenity
327 admits - A History of Violence
206 admits - The Gospel
197 admits - Corpse Bride
162 admits - Just Like Heaven
150 admits - The Greatest Game Ever Played
132 admits - Constant Gardener
97 admits - 40 Year Old Virgin
75 admits - Into the Blue (SAD!)

All in all, except for Waiting, it was a pretty dull Friday for the openers at my theater ;)

Thumbsucker, 9:50 PM, Fox Tower, 60% full in a 200 screener. Missed the trailers, but the crowd laughed a lot at the right moments and seemed to like it a lot.

Well, I finally saw this one, and was really impressed with it. It's not a movie without it's flaws, but I really appreciated how the movie deftly balanced off beat humor with a fascinating portrayal of how growing up odd and normal can be. Although the movie was mostly filmed in Washington County which isn't really my part of town, I did recognize a few locations like the Washington Square Mall. Even if it isn't exactly a display of the film's strengths, I've always found that being able to spot places you go to in films can be quite interesting. However, it wasn't nearly as compelling as the lead character, Justin Cobb (Lou Pucci in a strong, subtle performance), journeys through many situations. With a habit of sucking his thumb up until the age of 17, he goes through many trials looking for magic answers to solve all of his problems. The way in which one subtly comes to terms with this is what makes the film so insightful. Everyone is flawed, and it's the flaws that people have which make us who we are. Peppered by strong supporting work all around, Thumbsucker is a clever, plausible, and insightful look at teenage and family life. A-

Thumbsucker 1:40 187 theater.
8 people.

WHY WAS IT SUCH A BIG MEGAPLEX TYPE THEATER? i really don't know.

got in late.
missed the trailers.

LOVED THE MOVIE, favorite movie of the year, but also was my most anticipated. That said, the book was about 100 times better, no exaggeration. I like the character development but at times the movie was dull, but after the first 1/3 it really got better and Lou Pucci just did an awesome job portraying a teenage boy and what we/he went through. I only wish it would have been able to play to a better audience.

9/10.
