'The Great Raid' is most assuredly going to bomb. I have yet to see a theatrical trailer and the TV spots, while decent, aren't going to bring in a large audience. I personally still plan on seeing it, maybe catching the sneak preview this weekend before or after seeing 'The Dukes of Hazzard.'

Well, if Miramax is smart, they'll attach the trailer for "The Libertine" to it. That'd guarantee the movie at least a very small rise in audience, at least in the first week or so. There are enough Johnny Depp fans out there who are itching to see the Libertine trailer that they will go to see The Great Raid just to see if the trailer is attached. It wouldn't significantly affect The Great Raid, but it might be a smart move to put the trailer with it...

Joy

That wouldn't be a good idea since:

1) It'd add about $100-200 to the box-office. People are not THAT crazy about Depp to go and see a movie just to see the trailer of his newest film before it. Moreover, they simply won't knowit's attached and most of them can download it online.

2) It'd hurt The Libertine since almost no one will see the trailer since it'd be attached to a box-office flop.

Yeah i doubt anyone will go see a film just for the trailer to The Libertine. It will be online within a few weeks.

Only Star Wars trailers have ever been events. LOTR and Matrix also were sought after but not much else.

From HSX:

"Final Midnight Information For SoCal DUKES sites last night
-- notfabio, Aug 5, 12:18

Not amazingly fantastic but wound up doing about 82-90% of WEDDING CRASHERS Thursday Midnight business at sites which would put it exactly within the range that THR is tracking it at (25-30)

LBC: 121
OC: 155
IE: 101

IE is funnily enough the most rural of the bunch."

Just as I was expecting, DUKES was doing excellent today when I went to see it. My 2:25 showing was SOLD OUT a good 10 minutes before and the 4:30 and 5:00 showings were both sold out as I was leaving. It had a crowd that was larger than most other summer blockbusters. I see a 16 Million opening day. I enjoyed it a lot, by the way, awarding it an 8/10 (B+)

You'd think they'd be up earlier because there are chores to do.

 A lot of them farm and live in houses, not trailers. And who cares if they live in a trailer? Not all trailers are dumps. My cousin and aunt live in a mobile home in the city in a mobile home park and it's really nice. They aren't poor white trash at all. She can't stand people making fun of people in mobile homes and stereotyping, assuming they are all stupid white trash, and it has come to annoy me too because it's bullshit and not true. There are some shitty mobile home parks and some shitty mobile homes, just like there are some shitty houses. But there are also REALLY nice ones. And they aren't all on welfare either or watch Jerry Springer. What sickening stereotyping! I am not a fan of hillbillies so it's not like I'm sticking up for hillbillies, but I'm sticking up for everyone else that isn't a hillbilly but is from the south or lives in a mobile home.

I'm sorry, but I find it hard to grasp that many of the crowd reports I see here that indicate Dukes selling out like it has shows me that folks will see just about anything when it comes to movies.. For heaven sakes, save your goddamn $$$ on bullshit like this and wait for the DVD next month and even that's pushing it....

From notfabio on HSX:

Quote:
Yeah unless this has done absolutely outsized business in the South and I mean INSANELY so...

It's a short. Here were the numbers in the matinee
as of 6PM for all shows before 6PM for each film on opening weekend (DUKES VS WEDCR)

It works out to be %65 the business and that's assuming DUKES does identical biz to WEDDING CRASHERS later tonight and was not frontloaded today (which considering it is a known property means it probably will be).

DUKES SCREEN 1 236 ATTENDENCE
DUKES SCREEN 2 168 ATTENDENCE
DUKES SCREEN 3 170 ATTENDENCE

Total: 574 ATTENDENCE

Compared to WEDDING CRASHERS opening Friday

WED SCREEN 1 298 ATTENDENCE
WED SCREEN 2 249 ATTENDENCE
WED SCREEN 3 324 ATTENDENCE

Total: 871

I won't do an estimate on biz this early but the "good news" for the industry is that this isn't
a ISLAND or STEALTH sized bomb, but it may wind
up being a BEWITCHED size one.

And for March of the Penguins:

Quote:
EMPJY is holding NIIIICE, it was beating out DUKES per screen all day.

Wow, there were like pretty much no crowd reports tonight. I'm interested in seeing the numbers in the morning. I wish PENGUINS would surprise and do like 2 Million on Friday.

I wonder if Dukes will be a true regional movie. Probably will do very well in places like KY, TN, AL, GA, FL and other places. It might do poorly in NY, NJ, MA, CA, WA, IL and others. :-k

THE DUKES OF HAZZARD didn't sell out a single show at the mall theatre in Annapolis, MD. Here it was showing on two screens and it showed 5 times on each screen so 10 in total.

Here is my theater report.

March of the Penguins (135 seater)
1:10 - 21% full.
3:25 - 19% full.
5:45 - 24% full.
8:30 - 39% full.
10:45 - 22% full.
(all in all, it dropped 11% from last Friday).

My Date with Drew
2:15 - 2 people
4:40 - 2 people
7:25 - 15 people
9:55 - 13 people
(Sorry Drew, no hit here).

Dukes of Hazzard
12:15 (300 seater) - 11% full.
1:00 (600 seater) - 9% full.
1:45 (400 seater) - 18% full.
2:30 (600 seater) - 9% full.
3:15 (300 seater) - 16% full.
4:00 (600 seater) - 7% full.
4:45 (400 seater) - 10% full.
5:30 (600 seater) - 15% full.
6:15 (300 seater) - 29% full.
7:00 (600 seater) - 19% full.
7:45 (400 seater) - 42% full.
8:35 (600 seater) - 35% full.
9:05 (300 seater) - 82% full.
9:50 (600 seater) - 36% full.
10:35 (400 seater) - 61% full.
11:25 (600 seater) - 43% full.
12:00 (300 seater) - 62% full.
(Notice a pattern in the night shows. If you don't, I'll tell you. Each of them got like 200 something people. Overall, this was not bad for a rural movie, which are never popular here, so I say it did pretty good for this type of theater).

The only show to sell out was Wedding Crashers. It sold out the 10:10 show in the 250 seater (the 9:10 in the 300 seater came close).

All in all, this was the slowest summer Friday ever, with Dukes bringing down the business. In fact, the whole place was slow, so this theater may not be a good indicator on where the movies will go.

Not, and this is not surprizing, I knew that California would be one of the lowest grossing markets for the Dukes of Hazzard. To get this much business was lucky.
