Next on the Bomb Express: Underclassman (Sept. 2)
UNDERCLASSMAN
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0373416/fullcredits
Distributor: Miramax through their genre arm Dimension Films
Plot: A young, put-upon detective's (Cannon) moment to shine arrives in the form of an undercover assignment at an elite private academy. Having no problem blending in, he discovers a stolen-car crime ring that seems to involve the school's top students.
Director: Marcos Siega (Upcoming 'Pretty Persuasion' which looks 1,000 times better)
Writers: David Wagner and Brent Goldberg (Collaborated on last year's 'The Girl Next Door', another bomb, at least theatrically)
Stars - Nick Cannon (Drumline), Shawn Ashmore (X2: X-Men United), and Kelly Hu (X2: X-Men United again).
This film opens in a little more than a month. It features a plot that is decidedly bland, mixing 'The Fast and the Furious' with 'The Skulls', among others. It is never a good thing when one is reminded of two Paul Walker films at once.
Also not helping matters is the fact that the film is being released opposite 'Transporter 2', a film that is sure to open fairly big. The film has been delayed countless times after finishing filming back in 2003. The film is likely to be given a token theatrical release, much like Dimension's own 'Mindhunters' which bombed back in May. I'm expecting a theatre count of around 1,000 or lower. Yet another film that the Weinstein brothers just seem to want to get rid of as quickly and quietly as possible.
Opening: 4 million
Finish: 9-10 million.

I'd go with My Boss's Daughter numbers.
$5 million opening, $15 million total.

I see a similar opening. But, is it a comedy? becuase that plot is laughable.

This film has received even less promotion than 'My Boss's Daughter' did back in 2003. Also, Kutcher was a bigger star at that time than Nick Cannon is right now. That's my rationalization for it having lower numbers.

I think it's supposed to be an action comedy but the plot is indeed laughably generic.

Yeah, I never even heard of this until I saw the trailer attached to WEDDING CRASHERS, so I doubt many people know about it but I have seen quite a few tv spots lately. I don't want to see it at all though.
Opening - $9 million
Closing - $22 million

I think this movie is a joke, first of all Nick Cannon should be stopped, he can't act for shit. I think that it will do pretty terrible numbers, I say
3m opening with bad drops landing about 6.7

Well I'm not a big fan, but I wouldn't go so far as to say he doesn't have a following. Case in point: Drumline's 14 million opening (I couldn't find a prediction over 10 million since everyone claimed to have not even heard of it or seen marketing). There's been quite a few TV spots for this one, and they don't look bad. It'll be a miss, yeah, but I don't think it'll be an all out bomb. I'd agree with movies35's 9 million opening, though I don't think summer legs could make such a terrible multiplier. I'd go with 9/25.

That had terrible (not to mention non-existent) marketing that didn't sell any single part of the movie, whereas the trailers have been funny and noticeable for Underclassmen. That and it opened five days before Return of the King. I think it's fair to say that would overshadow just about any movie out there.

I don't believe the ads for this have been too notable at all. Rather bland, IMO. And it'll be overshadowed by THE DUKES OF HAZZARD, another car-themed action/comedy with more star wattage. Not quite the final chapter of LORD OF THE RINGS, but still a high profile Time Warner film.

I dont know if it'll bomb, I mean it probably cost no more then 15m-20m to make if even. Love Dont Cost a Thing had atleast ok marketing, this just plain sucks, still might open to more then Love seeing as it's summer and all.
Opening - 8m
Final - 22m

Really? Doesn't surprise me since it would have bombed had it been released against Dukes of Hazzard. Still somewhat surprised because I've been seeing TV spots for it recently and usually a film isn't delayed once TV spots start running.

Yep, check the official website.
Something similar to this happened with films like THE TRANSPORTER and BIG TROUBLE though, so it isn't the first time.

I remember 'The Transporter' being delayed but that was only a week or two I believe. Big Trouble was delayed because of Sept. 11th, if I remember correctly. It is rather unusual for a film to be delayed an entire month once TV spots have started running, especially for no apparent reason (other than Dimension probably realizing that it had no chance up against 'Dukes of Hazzard').

Its still opening against a higher profile, car-themed actioner, this time TRANSPORTER 2 instead of THE DUKES OF HAZZARD. Anywho, I don't believe this date'll change this film's fate much, I doubt a month'll help it unless they keep up with the spots until September 2nd, then it might just do well...

Transporter 2 will likely open with less then half as much as Dukes of Hazzard, and I think Transporter 2 could pull a Resident Evil: Apocylpse. It's a smart move in a pretty open slot. There won't have been another comedy since the R rated 40-Year Old Virgin, and it'll be the first PG-13 comedy since Dukes of Hazzard.

Delayed at the last moment is never a good thing. I was predicting a 5-7M opening before, and moving the date is not going to increase my prediction.

Well, the trailer looks generic and nothing about this movie screams hit. The budget shouldn't be big. I'm pegging it at around $15-25 million, so it'll hardly be a big bomb. I think this one will have some urban appeal thanks to its cast, but not enough to make it a big grosser. Also, as many have said, being delayed in the last minute and especially being delayed OUT of the summer is not a good sign. I somewhat agree with previous predictions in this thread:
Opening weekend - $7 million
Total gross - $18 million

The tracking is putting it at $2-4M for the 4-day weekend. About what I'm expecting.
