Trust me, Germans dig old-fashioned adventure flicks and that's what King Kong appears to be. I see it making around the same as POTC did.
I wonder if Harry Potter 4 can approach 3,000,000 admissions on its opening weekend...

You do realise that no movie has come close to 3,000,000 admissions on opening weekend....Harry Potter 1 despite all the hype managed only 2.590.464. It's going to be really tough i think.....2,500,000 is more probable.

Then again, Harry Potter 1 has beaten the previous record holder (Men in Black!) by 635,492 admissions (by 32.5%). Harry Potter 3 just needs to beat the record by 16% to manage that. Consiering minimal competition around that time, I also suppose it'll get at least as many theatres as ROTK, but most likely will even set a record with over 1,400 theatres. The hype will still be immense because of the new book. It will be very frontloaded, I think.

What happened in 2002 when Order of the Phoenix was released?

Order of the Pheonix was released in 2003, the year with no Harry Potter movie coming out, heh.

Interesting , though still, i don't see it beating Harry Potter 1, definately not by that margin. Save that for The Hobitt

UIP's "War of the Worlds," one of the few 2005 tentpoles that's met expectations, stayed somewhat sturdy in its sixth sesh with $5.8 million, lifting its offshore total to $324 million and worldwide cume to $548 million. "War" took in $1 million in the U.K. and $900,000 in Japan to lift totals in those markets to $52.1 million and $45.7 million, respectively.
WW = $548.6M

It will make another $30M-$35M from the current playdates. China could add an additional $5-10M. It will get to $360 to $370M overseas.

Also, Monday to Sunday (8/08 -8/14) in Japan will be very good due to obon holidays. It could get $5-$6M during that period.

War of the Worlds' performance in Japan has disappointed me a little so far. I thought it's a near-lock to make $100 million there (considering how well Minority Report, A.I. and The Last Samurai performed there). The holidays will give it a bump, but it still won't pass $70 million there it seems.

The Japan Earthquake impacted its gross significantly early in its run.

Yes, that's what I think too. However, I expected it to rebound quickly.

BOM updated its worldwide box-office 2005 charts:
War of the Worlds - $550.1 million (overseas: $325 million)
The USA should bring in an additional $10-12 million, Japan another $10-15 million. The rest of the world will have to contribute around $25-30 million for it to pass $600 million. I think that is entirely possible.

Update from Germany:
War of the Worlds had 42,998 admissions here in its 6th week, down a decent 34% from last weekend. The total admissions number stands at 2,614,265. It's #5 of the year (behind Star Wars: ROTS, Madagascar, Hitch and Meet the Fockers).
Overall, last weekend was great in terms of holds for all movies because of rather bad weather. Here's the weekend charts (in admissions):
1. Madagascar - 501,831 (-14%) - 5,161,054
2. Mr. & Mrs. Smith - 375,432 (-22%) - 2,248,693
3. The Island - 312,177 (NEW) - 312,177
4. Siegfried - 235,013 (-10%) - 690,328
5. Herbie: Fully Loaded - 197,204 (NEW) - 197,204
6. Crash - 61,071 (NEW) - 61,071
7. War of the Worlds - 42,998 (-34%) - 2,614,265
8. Fantastic Four - 39,865 (-40%) - 600,347
9. Die Höhle des gelben Hundes - 25,407 (-5%) - 70,746
10. The Wedding Crashers - 23,926 (-30%) - 324,516

Paramount’s War Of The Worlds has amassed $327.3m through UIP to date and has launched in every major market.
So it made 3.3mill this mid-week.
Tomorrow its going to be at 226.4 domestic so going into the weekend 226.4+327.3=553.7
Should be at about 558-560 at the end of the weekend.

WOTW had a very good weekend thanks a lot to the holiday in japan.
http://www.variety.com/article/VR111792 ... =1&s=h&p=0
The year's top offshore performers -- UIP's "War of the Worlds" and Fox's "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" -- continued to contribute at the end of their runs. "War" declined 34% to $4.1 million with the best perfperf coming from Japan, where the Obon holiday lifted the seventh weekend figure 33% to $1.3 million and the Japanese cume to $48.6 million.
"War of the Worlds" has topped $332 million offshore and $560 million worldwide
228.6+332=560.6mill WW right in the range where i predicted it would be at.
600mill here we come!

It'll end up as #4 or #5 of the year worldwide. It'll finish with pretty much around $600-610 million. Harry Potter and ROTS will definitely be ahead. Narnia will allmost certainly be ahead of it as well. It might not overtake it in the USA, but overseas it'll be huge. The question is whether King Kong can outdo it worldwide or not. I don't think it will.
