I hope Mary and the Witch's Flower breaks out. It gives me serious Miyazaki vibes from the trailer, kind of like a more serious Kiki's Delivery Service. The animation looks beautiful too.

Japan's live action industry is dying, they should stop ruining the original work by adapting them into cheap VFX trash, I had horrible experience with Attack on Titan, even the top notch Youtubers have higher budget than that for their videos Mary will continue where Your name left off, likely to be another anime blockbuster

I still want to see Attack on Titan. I have it downloaded on my old (broken) laptop.

^ If you are a fan of the series or are really interested in it, than watch both otherwise its not worth it. Try to watch both of the movies together and if possible just the anime series, its not too big anyways.

I only managed to sit through the first part. They made a really bad movie. So personally I don't think you should waste time with it. Rewatch the animated series instead.

I've never seen the animated series. I just want to watch it because it was a big Japanese film.

Well i don't know if you're gonna find a good modern huge Japanese live action movie. I've seen a couple of them and they're all (very bad) CGI fests that mimic the usual Hollywood plot and dialogue structure. I'd rather opt for something bizarre and fun like Hentai Kamen. After the first WTF effect you can get into it and enjoy for the bizarity it is.

I agree with _axiom you should rather watch the anime series than the movies for AoT.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated!
The Weekend Forecast will be posted in an hour or so, sorry for the delay.
Beauty and the Beast will repeat atop the box office for a seventh-consecutive week, while Logan is looking at a modest second place debut.

We now enter June, regularly one of the three weakest months of the year, and the first weekend of the month is certainly going to be quite underwhelming.
>Beauty and the Beast will retain its position atop the box office for a seventh-consecutive weekend. After Sunday, Japan will become the #1 overseas market for the film, surpassing the U.K.
Disney's latest live-action iteration became the 31st film to ever exceed ¥10 billion uber-blockbuster milestone earlier this week (no official announcement yet), and now begins its journey of challenging Disney's other uber-blockbusters: Toy Story 3 (¥10.80 billion), Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (¥10.90 billion), Finding Nemo (¥11.00 billion), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (¥11.63 billion), and finally, Alice in Wonderland (¥11.80 billion) -- which it'll need to beat to become the company's highest-grossing live-action film in the market.
>Logan had a pretty disappointing start on Friday, and its weekend business isn't looking much better. It's unlikely to reach even ¥200 million over the weekend frame itself, which will make reaching the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone rather difficult. However... the X-Men franchise hasn't been performing well as of late (despite the growth seen by most other superhero series'), and it might come in above some of its recent predecessors, so... there's that silver-lining.
>Flower and Sword will have the typically poor/mediocre debut for this time of year, although, if it does indeed come in above ¥100 million ($1 million+), Toei has to be somewhat satisfied considering their very poor track record with live-action films. The 16th-century period film based on the novel "Hana Ikusa" by Tadashi Onitsuka is directed by Tetsuo Shinoharad.
>Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter and The Fate of the Furious have both already set new records in their respective franchises, and will continue to add to their very impressive totals thus far.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (06/03-04)
Shit for Logan, but then did anybody really expect it to do amazingly well in Japan? Even The Wolverine didn't do so well and that was SET in Japan.

Damn I thought the positive WoM will help Logan to open well but oh well...
Fate is doing much better than GotG2 surprisingly.
Great for BatB crossing $10b mark, still hoping for it to do more than Alice.

How come the vast majority of movies are released so late in Japan in comparison to other countries? I've never really understood that.

Star Lord wrote: How come the vast majority of movies are released so late in Japan in comparison to other countries? I've never really understood that. For a number of reasons, but two in particular are key factors: 1. Marketing/Release Schedule: Japan isn't like China in that they limit the release of imported films and release them in unfavorable weeks/months, rather it's quite the opposite. A lot of Hollywood blockbusters are released in "weak" for Japan in the U.S. and elsewhere (November, May, and June, for example are poor months in Japan), so the investment returns would be at risk unless a blockbuster is an established property with proven success. Also, the Japan movie industry releases a lot of films, and while many films can thrive together at once in the market without cannibalizing one another, there are only so many screens/showtimes to go around so imported releases sometimes get delayed a bit. And, to further add to this point, a delayed release often plays out in favor of an imported releases so long as a film doesn't completely bomb financially and critically in the U.S. and elsewhere first. If a film is a smash hit in the U.S. and elsewhere, it maximizes the potential of its eventual Japan release since it allows for a larger release, proper dubbing, and higher general interest among Japanese audiences who are often reserved in the films the choose to see. 2. Localization: Imported films that get the dub treatment almost always perform better than a release that's in English only (with subtitles). Japanese audiences generally prefer to watch films with Japanese voice actors, and it can take some time to get this done correctly since most American films contain many Western jokes, songs, dialogue, etc. that's often very foreign in Japan. Piracy is also near non-existent in Japan, so delayed theatrical releases (even to the point of home video release everywhere else in the world) never suffer from this like they normally would in most parts of the world.

Based on estimates, it's tracking just 3.3% behind Alice after seven weeks now, following a very similar, but higher (by 1.9%), seventh weekend gross.
>Logan had a pretty disappointing debut in the market, but it at the very least looks to have come in a little higher than the last film in the general X-Men franchise, X-Men: Apocalypse. It's probably not going to reach the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (06/03-04)
Corpse, when are Blu-ray/DVD release dates typically announced in Japan for Hollywood films? I noticed Disney has (had?) a habit of announcing them early and affecting their film's late legs. Do you know when Moana or Sing had their home release dates announced (just to use a couple of the year's recent blockbusters)?

What a wonderful country.

I've fun watching Chris and Leon doing fun things together in Resident Evil: Vendetta, but I'm very shock that it's not on box office, didn't it release in Japan already?
