Sin City
R/C Cinemas 8 (one screen)
1:10 P.M., 270 seats, 15% full (decent for an afternoon show since not many people see afternoon shows at my theater- then it's usually pretty busy or PACKED for the really big movies (LOTR, Matrix, etc.)
Trailers
Star Wars Episode II: Revenge of the Sith (excited whispering- looks awesome)
The Devil's Rejects (nothing)
Mindhunters (nothing)
My Review (previously posted on CHUD)
Saw it. Friggin' loved it. Cannot wait for the DVD (which is sure to be amazing). One of the most beautiful looking movies I have ever seen- the cinematography was just gorgeous. The acting was quite good for the most part as well, especially the great performances by Mickey Rourke (Marv was an AWESOME chracter) and Bruce Willis as Hartigan (his best role in years). Kevin (Elijah Wood) and The Yellow Bastard were daammnn freaky. There were a couple of scenes that made me laugh quite hard as well (espcially the arrow scene- made my audience explode with laughter). Cheerfully gory, great action sequences, just a fun, fun movie. Really hope Rodriguez and Miller make a sequel (never read any of the graphic novels though- now I want to). They probably will now since it looks to be a huge hit because of the huge almost $12 million Friday gross- huge for a dark, bloody R-rated film.

Sin City
3:45 PM, 300 seater Sold out.
Trailers
Sith - Lots of fanboy chatter
The Amityville Horror - nada
House of Wax - unfortunately lots of chatter
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - one of the funniest trailers I've ever seen. Lots of laughs.
War of the Worlds - nada
Movie
I'm torn. Though I love the look and feel of the film, I can't say I loved the actual film. There have been several movies lately that have experimented with the medium (Waking Life, Sky Captain, Toy Story). And though Sin City isn't a complete failure, something just doesn't feel right about it.
This film should have connected with me on every level, I fit perfectly into it's demographic. I love film noir, I love comic books, I love ultra-violence, and I love chicks with guns and knives (Can I keep Devon Aoki in one of my spare bedrooms? Maybe in a cage?)
Part of the problem for me lies in the story itself. The three chapters are wildly uneven and the dialogue, though purposely stilted, never grabbed me (outside of a random one liner).
A+ for effort
B- for the film

Sin City
6:30PM, 50% full
Trailers:
The Skeleton Key - Looks okay, no reaction from the audience.
The Amityville Horror - Lots of whispers.
Star Wars 3 - Some chatter.
Hitckhiker's Guide - Funniest trailer ever (the making fun of the stereotypical trailer, trailer). This is going to be really big. Large appeal, comedy, and fantastic advertisement.
Film: *Possible Spoilers*
Loved the style, loved the cinematography, and the script was pretty good. A very nice cast. The story, for me, started to fall apart a bit by the end. The "experiment gone wrong" dude and such, bleh. I didn't like that. Willis was surprisingly really good in this film though, I enjoyed him. The star of the show was Rourke. Excellent job. The whole thing was gritty action and fabulous fun and a wonder to look at. I really, really liked it. A strong A-.
Oh, and the EDITING!!!!! Faaaaaaaaaabbbbulous. The editing work in this film was pitch perfect. Excellent intertwining of the stories, in my opinion. Excellent. The ending scene was a great way to wrap the film back down to the first scene. Can't get much better than those last lines.
PEACE, Mike

Sin City
7:00 show, 500-seat auditorium, 95% attendance.
Trailers
Lords of Dogtown
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
The Skeleton Key
Unleashed
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (note: the new trailer is the most clever I've seen in years)
The Devil's Rejects
Movie (spoilers ahead - beware)
The best movie of the year so far. Sin City is the ambitious, lavish and imaginative comic book film ever committed to film. Pictures such as What Dreams May Come and Dark City have astounded me before with their visual "eye candy". Sin City puts anything previously like that to shame; I have never seen a more wonderful-looking film. Sin City is predominantly in black-and-white but contains flashes of color throughout. I'm guessing the MPAA was glad for this, because this would've struggled to get an R rating if the more violent scenes were in color. This was a *very violent* movie. Many people have argued this film has style over substance, which is primarily true. However, that's just a testament to the style itself, as all three segments are energetic, entertaining, well-written, well-acted, etc. I'll do a brief review for each segment:
The Hard Goodbye - Probably my favorite segment of the three. As the wisecracking, ugly Marv, Mickey Rourke (I can't believe I'm saying this; Mickey Rourke?!) was a complete hoot. His actions are somehow believable as we watch him get revenge on the person(s) responsible for the death of his recently-met lover, Goldie. Carla Gugino (Marv's lesbian parole officer) and Jaime King (Goldie/Goldie's twin sister) are on hand to bare their breasts and look fierce. Elijah Wood, despite having no lines, is really, really creepy as Kevin, a cannibalistic, mute killer with odd glasses. The scene where he is tortured just gave me the willies. You'll know when you see it. Anyway, this segment sends Sin City off in a booming start.
The Big Fat Kill - Clive Owen is fantastic as Dwight, who helps to try to hide the body of Jack (Benicio Del Toro), a skeezy cop who has entered Basin City's old town to purchase a hooker, when the hookers all team up to kill him before they realize he's a cop. This promises to ruin the truce between Basin City's police and the prostitutes. Rosario Dawson is terrific as Gail, Dwight's sometimes girlfriend and leader of the prostitutes. Alexis Bledel is fine, and Devon Aoki (another mute character) gets to kick a lot of ass and split people in half with swords. Brittany Murphy is also good in her role, but it's a somewhat small part.
That Yellow Bastard - Capping off the strong leads of all segments, Bruce Willis is very good as Hartigan, a cop framed for the attempted rape of young Nancy by a senator's son, Roark (Nick Stahl). While sitting in jail, Hartigan realizes Nancy (now a grown-up stripper, as played by Jessica Alba) might be in trouble since she has stopped writing to him in jail. He eventually gets out and goes to look for her. Eventually, "The Yellow Bastard" tracks down Nancy and Hartigan, and we discover that he is actually a deformed version of Roark, who was an experiment gone wrong when attempting to restore the (ouch) testicles Hartigan shot off years earlier. Jessica Alba gives a solid performance as a stripper who doesn't show any skin, while Nick Stahl is suitably hideous as The Yellow Bastard.
I'm not sure I understood the bookends with Josh Hartnett/Marley Shelton and Hartnett/Alexis Bledel, but...whatever. Great film! A
After the Movie
I'm thinking Sin City might decline from Friday because it wasn't selling out as much as last night. On the other hand, the Fever Pitch sneak preview actually sold out tonight on a bigger theatre this time, so look for promising results from that one.

I am not sure about the beginning other than the line - now I won't now her story - maybe you weren't suppose to
But the ending with AB above was probably how she got taken in to be the stoolie.

To those saying Sin City is all style over substance, I really couldn't disagree more. I felt Sin City was everything Kill Bill didn't have (note: I love Kill Bill, but apart from the final act in the second film, it had no emotional punch, in my humbly opinion). I found the film surprisingly emotional and moody. I felt the characters. I could see the emotion behind all 3 main male characters, and their motivation. The two strongest stories being the one with Rourke and the one with Willis.
Just my two cents.
PEACE, Mike

Guys, look at what happened today at my theater before 9:00 (yesterday/today comparison)
Beauty Shop
11:45 (300 seater) - no show yesterday / 6% full today.
12:40 (300 seater) - 16% full / 4% full.
1:30 (200 seater) - 19% full / 19% full.
2:35 (300 seater) - 14% full / 12% full.
3:25 (300 seater) - 14% full / 20% full.
4:10 (200 seater) - 16% full / 20% full.
5:10 (300 seater) - 13% full / 17% full.
6:10 (300 seater) - 18% full / 25% full.
6:55 (200 seater) - 37% full / 30% full.
8:00 (300 seater) - 49% full / 55% full.
(overall, it was up only 15% from yesterday, not a good sign.).
Sin City
11:30 (600 seater) - no show / 6% full.
12:15 (600 seater) - 14% full / 9% full.
1:00 (400 seater) - 15% full / 14% full.
1:45 (400 seater) - 20% full / 23% full.
2:30 (600 seater) - 18% full / 15% full.
3:15 (600 seater) - 16% full / 22% full.
4:00 (400 seater) - 27% full / 18% full.
4:45 (400 seater) - 21% full / 31% full.
5:35 (600 seater) - 26% full / 18% full.
6:20 (600 seater) - 20% full / 24% full.
7:10 (400 seater) - 36% full / 38% full.
7:50 (400 seater) - 75% full / 56% full.
8:45 (600 seater) - 75% full / 68% full.
9:25 (600 seater) - Sold Out / 50% full.
with these set of show, we were off 13% from yesterday, and what is worse, considering that yesterday, the 10:20, the 11:00, the 11:55, and the 12:30 were all sold out, but today, and none of them had advance tickets sold today, we could see a 20% + drop today.
In other news, Fever Pitch sneak was 80% full yesterday, but was Sold Out today (both in 150 seaters). Is the word of mouth kicking in?
Also, Miss Congeniality went up 45%, Guess Who went up 44%, Ring 2 went up 25%, Upside of Anger went up only 28%, and Robots, surprisingly, went up only 23% (since all the show were before 9:00).
Overall, thanks to Sin City, business barely increased over yesterday, making it very slow for a Saturday. Don't be surprized it multipliers are low this weekend.

My theatre seemed to be behaving exactly the same way. Sin City was not selling out as much tonight, and the Fever Pitch sneak preview sold out tonight but not last night.

I were an audience member, I would think that Fever Pitch would make a better Saturday night movie than a Friday one. Let's see how it does tomorrow.

Sin City
AMC Burbank 16
8:06pm showing/500seater SOLD OUT
Trailers:
Mindhunters-Few takes
House of Wax- little talking
Star Wars- Huge clapping, beginning and end.
The Skeleton Key- Meh.
Red Eye-Huge reaction, similar to the first time I saw the trailer.
The Amityville Horror-pretty good
HitchhikersOne of the Best trailers Ever! The crowd was going wild. Very FUNNY.
WOW they showed a lot of trailers!!
Movie
Where do I begin, the film was incredible and beautiful. I love new concepts and new ideas, and this film is all about that. Rodriguez did a great job, his work on this film is incredible. The actors are all great, since the movie is packed with lots of people, no single character is really the main, but more like many great supporting. All the story was fantastic and well-written. My favorite was the one with Marv, he was soo great in the movie! Jessica Alba is HOT HOT HOT in this film. I was bummed that she didn't get more time on screen, but she was HOT. Mijo kicked major ass and so did Kevin, both we silence and awesome. I loved how the film was in black and white with color in certain places and always at times looked like a comic book. I was just blown away by this film. I was never really anticipating this film, but I will never regard watching this beautiful movie. I believe that this film will be in my top ten when the year is done.
Crowd
The crowd went wild for this film, everyone was laughing and having a blast. When certain things were being ripped out, people were going crazy. I think that 99% has fun, I know the guy that was yelling throughtout did. When the film ended, huge amount of clapping. Half left and half stayed, but people who were up were still clapping.
My Grade
I give this film an A.

On the Fever Pitch Word of Mouth above - isn't Saturday a bigger movie day which added the extra people ( I know the Sat BO beats the Friday BO ).

That said - the trailer got lots of laughs especially the ending last scene where Drew get shit by the ball and Jimmy Fallon, not knowing, is shown mugging/waving for the camera with the guy who caught the ball.

Movie Where do I begin, the film was incredible and beautiful.
Crowd The crowd went wild for this film, everyone was laughing and having a blast. When certain things were being ripped out, people were going crazy. I think that 99% has fun, I know the guy that was yelling throughtout did. When the film ended, huge amount of clapping. Half left and half stayed, but people who were up were still clapping.
My Grade I give this film an A.
Dude, where do you live that there's this much excitement and applauding for a movie, even a movie like this?? Some of this stuff has to be exagerrated??? I have never been to a theatre where there was anything like you described above..

PEACE, Mike
Two cents noted and promptly thrown out.
I'm not sure I understood the bookends with Josh Hartnett/Marley Shelton and Hartnett/Alexis Bledel, but...whatever. Great film!
Josh Hartnett's character is a contract killer. At the end he was sent to kill Alexis Bledel's character because she survived the shooting when the prostitutes killed all the cops. The prostitutes sent Josh Harnett to get the revenge they needed for satisfaction.

I believe sako. Burbank is an industry town (Burbank Studios, Disney) just North of Hollywood.
Around here the audience is not "on guard" against hype (we ignore it), while passion prevails for films that are worth a look.
If you would like to experience these kinds of crowd reations, I suggest trying a screening in or around Hollywood at a theater patronized by the Hollywood community. You might try the Arc Light Dome, the Universal Cineplex on the hill, or visit Westwood off the U.C.L.A. campus on an opening night. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences regularly features retro screenings of Oscar classics at their theater for a $5 public admission (Los Angeles and New York).
Second choice would be an art house/revival house patronized by film students, or visit an urban theater where the local folks become part of the show by reacting to the film.
